Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes (Psych/Prog/Folk/Avant-garde/Rock {França})

Liderada por Patrice Moullet, a Alpes foi fundada em 1970 com Catherine Ribeiro como vocalista. Uma banda muito original, altamente prolífica durante os anos 70 e ainda viva. Sua música é bastante experimental e difícil de definir e envolve folk, progressivo e improvisação. Patrice Moullet é o inventor de vários instrumentos musicais, entre os quais o "cosmophone" e o "percuphone". Em um estilo vocal semelhante ao de Brigitte Fontaine, o tom de voz baixo de Catherine Ribeiro também pode evocar Nico, às vezes, e é muito especial, caótico e expressivo. Muitas vezes há uma intensa tensão dramática no canto. Os álbuns de estréia são os melhores, e "Paix", com suas duas longas suítes, é considerado o mais progressivo e é o melhor para começar.

HISTÓRIA

Nascida em Lyon durante a guerra, Catherine Ribeiro começou sua carreira atuando, gravando um filme para J. L. Godart, Les Carabiniers. Ela conheceu seu futuro parceiro de escrita, Patrice Moullet (então sob o nome de Albert Juroost), antes de começar a cantar, gravando um monte de singles ao longo dos anos 60, tanto em português (origem de seus pais) quanto em francês. Estes singles são agora compilados em um conjunto chamado "Libertés". No final dos anos 60, Moullet pede a ela para começar uma banda, inicialmente nomeada 2Bis, onde ela será a pessoa da frente. O grupo teve a sorte de participar de um dos poucos festivais ainda organizados na França no início dos anos 70 (a maioria deles foi proibida para evitar outros tumultos entre jovens e estudantes depois de maio de 68, tanto o grupo quanto o festival receberam o "aval" das autoridades algumas horas antes de começar) em Port Leucate, em seguida, Avignon, jogando para grandes multidões e recebendo ampla atenção do público.

Durante o início dos anos 70, Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes gravou uma série de álbuns impressionantes, começando com "Âme debout" e terminando com "Le temps de l'autre", sendo o mais notável "Rat débile et homme des champs", com faixas impressionantes como "Poeme non-epique" e "Ere de la putréfaction". O grupo é então centrado em torno de Catherine, o guitarrista Moullet e o tecladista Lemoine (futuro membro da Gong) e Motron, mas até 1976, apenas Lemoine permaneceu com Catherine. Nos anos 70, os álbuns se tornarão mais sábios em termos de provocações, mas ganharão habilidades musicais e espectro, mas Ribeiro começou a gravar álbuns solo dedicados a poetas ("Jacqueries" para Jacques Prévert) e cantores semi-anarquistas (Ferré, Brel etc. ..).

Em 1981, o grupo debandou em toda a sua glória (prêmios e prêmios da academia). Depois de "La déboussole", Catherine gravou uma série de álbuns cada vez mais gentis e cada vez menos interessantes, até que ela contatou Moullet para colaborações solo. O mesmo Moullet reformou Alpes no início dos anos 90 sem Ribeiro, e mais dois discos foram lançados. Moullet ainda toca música experimental através de seu projeto Atelier Alpes, enquanto Ribeiro ainda grava discos de sua voz.

Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes gravou uma série de álbuns bastante bem sucedidos, reunindo alguns elogios e prêmios anuais da imprensa especializada, tocados por toda a Europa e até mesmo na América Latina e no norte da África e agora são vistos como um grupo icônico dos anos 70 na França. Seu uso de percuphone e cosmophone raramente vistos (ambos instrumentos alpinos), suas longas peças "Poème non-epique", as letras anarquistas e ecologistas de Ribeiro e a atmosfera condenada fizeram deste um grupo muito distinto e original, que tem seu próprio som e que esteve na vanguarda da contracultura.

Led by Patrice Moullet, Alpes was founded in 1970 with Catherine Ribeiro as the lead singer. A very original band, highly prolific throughout the 70's and still alive. Their music is rather experimental and hard to define and involves folk, progressive and improvisation. Patrice Moullet is the inventor of several musical instruments amongst which include the "cosmophone" and the "percuphone". In a similar vocal style to Brigitte Fontaine, Catherine Ribeiro's low voice tone may also evoke Nico, at times, and is very special, chaotic and expressive. There's often an intense dramatic tension in the singing. The debut albums are the best, and "Paix", with its two long suites, is considered the most progressive and is the best one to start with.

HISTORY

Born in Lyon during the war, Catherine Ribeiro started her career in acting, shooting a film for J.L. Godart, Les Carabiniers. She met her future writing partner, Patrice Moullet (then under the name of Albert Juroost), before she started singing, recording a bunch of singles throughout the 60's, both in Portuguese (her parent's origins) and in French. These singles are now compiled in a set called "Libertés". In the late 60's, Moullet asks her to starts a band, first named 2Bis, where she'll be the front person. The group was lucky enough to participated to one of the very few festival still organized in France in the early 70's (most of them being banned to avoid further youth/student riots after May 68 both the group and festival getting the "go-ahead" from authorities a few hours before starting) in Port Leucate, then Avignon, playing to huge crowds and getting wide notice of the public.

During the early 70's, Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes recorded a string of stunning albums, starting with "Âme debout" and ending with "Le temps de l'autre", the most remarkable being "Rat débile et homme des champs", with stunning tracks such as "Poème non-epique" and "Ere de la putréfaction". The group is then centered around Catherine, the guitarist Moullet and the keyboardist Lemoine (future member of Gong) and Motron, but until 1976, only Lemoine remained with Catherine. The later 70's will see albums getting wiser in terms of provocations, but will gain in musician abilities and spectrum, but Ribeiro started recording solo albums dedicated to poets ("Jacqueries" for Jacques Prévert) and semi-anarchists singers (Ferré, Brel etc...).

In 1981, the group disbanded in its full glory (awards and academy prizes). After "La déboussole", Catherine recorded a string of albums increasingly gentle and decreasingly interesting, until she will recontact Moullet for solo collabs. The very same Moullet reformed Alpes in the early 90's without Ribeiro, and two more records was released. Moullet is still playing experimental music through his project Atelier Alpes, while Ribeiro still graces discs of her voice.

Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes recorded a string of fairly successful albums, gathering a few plaudits and yearly awards from specialized press, played throughout Europe and even in Latin America and Northern Africa and are now seen as an iconic group of the hippy 70's in France. Their use of seldom-seen percuphone and cosmophone (both alpine instruments), its lengthy "Poème non-epique" pieces, Ribeiro's anarchist avant-garde and ecologist lyrics and doomed atmosphere made this a very distinct and original group, that has its own sound, and which was at the forefront of the counter-culture.
