Matthew Kelly era um californiano que já havia atraído atenção tocando gaita blues e excursionando com artistas como Mel Brown, John Lee Hooker e T-Bone Walker. Kelly logo se viu envolvido com o crescente cenário do rock de São Francisco. Ele adicionou guitarra ao seu repertório e começou a tocar com Chris Herold e Dave Torbert.

Em 1969, os três foram contratados para tocar na banda Horses, que às vezes era liderada pelo ator e vocalista Don Johnson (sim, o personagem James 'Sonny' Crockett da série de televisão americana muito famosa na década de 1980, Miami Vice). Horses gravou um álbum auto-intitulado antes de entrar em colapso. Em uma entrevista, Kelly falou sobre a experiência:

"Estou um pouco envergonhado. Realmente fizemos um disco. Estávamos apoiando esse cantor de Hollywood, um cara que era do tipo Jim Morrison. Felizmente, esse registro é muito difícil de obter. Então, para quem quer sair correndo e comprar, acho que eles terão um tempo muito difícil. Tudo bem, pois é um pouco embaraçoso".

Talvez por vergonha pessoal, o próximo passo de Kelly o tenha encontrado no Reino Unido. Ao mesmo tempo, o baterista Kerry Gaines, o tecladista Cliff Hall, o guitarrista Gordon Huntley, o guitarrista Bob Le Gate e o cantor/baixista John Rapp se encontraram na Inglaterra. Originalmente de Indiana, eles conseguiram atrair a atenção do publicitário da The Beatles, Tony Barrow. Barrow assinou como gerente e usou suas conexões para conseguir um contrato com a Kapp para a banda. A gravadora decidiu então enviar o grupo para Londres, onde se juntaram ao colega expatriado Kelly.

A formação expandida foi feita em parceria com os produtores Mike Leander e Roger Watson para o seu LP de estréia auto-intitulado. O álbum nunca foi menos do que agradável, mas, da mesma forma, não havia nada para distingui-lo, o que o torna muito ruim se não tivesse uma ou duas composições um pouco mais fortes. Com esses ingredientes, esses caras poderiam ter sido grandes artistas. Kapp também gravou o álbum para um single na forma de "O.K. Sam/Go, talk to Rachel" (número de catálogo 2115 da Kapp).

Matthew Kelly was a Californian who had already attracted attention playing blues harmonica and touring with artists such as Mel Brown, John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker. Kelly was soon caught up in the growing San Francisco rock scene. He added guitar to his repertoire and started playing with Chris Herold and Dave Torbert.

In 1969, the three were hired to play in the band Horses, which was sometimes led by actor and vocalist Don Johnson (yes, the character James 'Sonny' Crockett from the very famous American television series in the 1980s, Miami Vice). Horses recorded a self-titled album before it collapsed. In an interview, Kelly talked about the experience:

"I'm a bit embarrassed about. We actually made a record. We were backing up this Hollywood singer, a guy who was sort of a Jim Morrison type. We got flown down to Hollywood and lived there for three or four months while we were making this very commercial record, of which "Jump for joy" (a Kingfish's tune) was on the record with this guy, Don Johnson, was singing. Fortunately this record is very difficult to get. So for anybody that wants to run right out and buy it, I think they will have a very difficult time. It is just as well for it is a bit embarrassing".

Perhaps out of personal shame, Kelly's next step found him in the UK. At the same time, drummer Kerry Gaines, keyboardist Cliff Hall, pedal guitarist Gordon Huntley, guitarist Bob Le Gate and singer/bassist John Rapp met in England. Originally from Indiana, they managed to catch the attention of The Beatles publicist Tony Barrow. Barrow signed as a manager and used his connections to secure a contract with Kapp for the band. The label then decided to send the group to London, where they joined fellow expatriate Kelly.

The expanded lineup was made in partnership with producers Mike Leander and Roger Watson for their self-titled debut LP. The album was never less than enjoyable, but likewise there was nothing to distinguish it, which makes it very bad if it didn't have one or two slightly stronger compositions. With these ingredients, these guys could have been great artists. Kapp also recorded the album for a single in the form of "O.K. Sam/Go talk to Rachel" (Kapp catalog number 2115).
