FEO - Bedste på den fede måde [1971-74] - 2008 (Psychedelic Folk Rock {Dinamarca})

FEO foi uma banda dinamarquesa de folk rock psicodélico. A música alternava entre belas canções líricas, canções instrumentais que eram uma mistura de música violinista e clássica, bem como algumas canções grotescas em que a voz de Rudi era incluída como instrumento. A banda gravou dois álbuns. Os dois álbuns da FEO não são de forma alguma facilmente acessíveis. Quando o ouvinte é embalado em tons calmos, a voz de Rudi corta como uma serra elétrica. Mas a banda também tinha uma peculiaridade: era formada por membros que tinham uma visão muito fraca ou não a tinham ao todo.

HISTÓRIA

Tudo começou por volta de 1965 no Blindeinstituttet - uma instituição para cegos - em Hellerup. A banda ganhou o nome de FEO devido a uma interpretação equivocada. Rudi era um ávido companheiro da banda e o melhor que se conseguia em gravadores eram as marcas B&O e Ferrograph. O nome foi pronunciado por ele como "feograph". Então, em seu primeiro trabalho, o grupo passou a se chamar Feo Beo Band. Mas "Feo" sozinho parecia melhor e mais misterioso.

A história remonta a 1970 e a banda agora consistia em Rudi Albertsen e Flemming Nørgård, que cuidava do texto e da música e tocava todos os tipos de instrumentos, Thorkild Blond Andersen na flauta e Sune Durhuus na guitarra. FEO was a Danish band of psychedelic folk rock. The music alternated between beautiful lyrical songs, instrumental songs that were a mixture of violinist and classical music, as well as some grotesque songs in which Rudi's voice was included as an instrument. The band recorded two albums. FEO's two albums are by no means easily accessible. When the listener is packed in calm tones, Rudi's voice cuts like a chainsaw. But the band also had a peculiarity: it was formed by members who had a very weak vision or did not have it at all.

"Bedste på den fede måde" gives you all the best FEO produced between 1971 and 1974. Below is a little of the story told in the booklet that accompanies the CD. I apologize for the poor translation of the Danish language. But I hope it is as close to "correct" as possible.

STORY

It all started around 1965 at Blindeinstituttet - an institution for the blind - in Hellerup. The band was named FEO due to a misinterpretation. Rudi was an avid companion of the band and the best that was obtained in recorders were the brands B&O and Ferrograph. The name was pronounced by him as "feograph". Then, in their first work, the group was renamed Feo Beo Band. But "Feo" alone looked better and more mysterious.

The story goes back to 1970 and the band now consisted of Rudi Albertsen and Flemming Nørgård, who took care of text and music and played all kinds of instruments, Thorkild Blond Andersen on the flute and Sune Durhuus on the guitar. The music was a whimsical mix of classical Renaissance music, impulses from the new electric rock scene and a bit of borrowing from the jazz chat corner played acoustically or perhaps more precisely with Rudi's voice.

FEO started to lodge in Copenhagen's folk music environment and played mainly on Mikroskopet, on H.C. Andersens Boulevard. It was the place of, among others, Sebastian, Herman and other rising talents. The site was also one of the places where Sten Bramsen went looking for talent for the TV show "Musikalske venner". Bramsen fell head over heels with the song "Bedstemor", which was released to the whole family in Denmark during prime time. The number appeared shortly afterwards on an album mixed with the various artists of the stations. Rudi was not particularly enthusiastic about the TV version. Shortly after, FEO contacted Jørgen Bornefeldt, who had heard about the orchestra through a mutual acquaintance, Per "Pelle" Jørgensen. Pelle was excited about "Bedstemor" and had told Bornefeldt about it. Bornefeldt owned Spectator Records and studied at Aalborg. The album "Eg meini teð" was recorded in a few days. The title was a Faroese saying that literally meant "it seemed to me", which came from Rune, who had ancestry in the northern archipelago. Bornefeldt was known in the industry for being good at launching projects, but not very good at sailing with them. So FEO ended up like so many other Spectator projects failing.

Another album was released in 1972, but was not completed. It would take two years before the album was completed with the Spectator recordings along with the newly recorded tracks from the "Filtskolyd" album. The new tracks on the album were recorded at the Karma studio in Herringløse.

"Bedstemor" did not stop playing. Music industry playboy Poul Bruun, who had his finger on the ground and a nose for hits like Gasolin and Lone Kellermann, listened to FEO and immediately became interested in his playful style. He persuaded CBS to release the compilation album "Bedste og Andre Madrester", which was a kind of "the best", taken from both albums. But again, everything was "forgotten" about marketing and "Bedstemor" was retired, until she was dug up again in 2005, included in Universal's triple-hippie tribute "Herfra hvor vi stod". Poul Bruun and CBS now still had high hopes for Rudi.

In 1977, FEO broke up and Rudi started working with a new band. Poul Bruun had fallen in love with the songbook by the black blues singer Leadbelly. It was obvious that Rudi could interpret the songs in the right way. The album "Rudi & Hans Letbitre Band" has now become an excellent album with some fun, interesting and sometimes quite frivolous lyrics. Rudi seemed to be on his ace and, to strangers, it doesn't sound like a commissioned job at all. True to tradition, CBS made a good record with an excellent cover by Peder Bundgaard, but again everything about marketing was forgotten. The album fell as quietly into oblivion as the FEO records. Poul Bruun did not forget about Rudi, so they created the Kong Pære record label in the early 80s, so Rudi was invited to record an album. The result was the album “Rudi Rudi” in 1982. Rudi resumed his collaboration with Flemming Nørgaard, complemented by Niels Ringling making a successful album, with a significantly less hysterical and much more restrained Rudi.

Since then, everything has been relatively quiet around Rudi, but he has been playing over the years in his Copenhagen apartment. Guitars, keyboards and amplifiers in all shapes fill Rudi Sørensen's home. Albertsen was put on the shelf when Rudi adopted his mother's name after his stepfather died.
