Ocarinah - Première vision de l'étrange - 1977 (Space Progressive Jazz Rock {França})

Ocarinah veio da cidade de Oyonnax, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, França. A banda em torno do tecladista-guitarrista Jean-Michel Valette foi provavelmente formada no início dos anos 1970 e esteve ativa por vários anos na mudança de formações que flutuavam entre trio e quinteto. Em novembro de 1977 o trio de Valette, o baixista Marc Perdix e o baterista Charles Bevand gravaram o primeiro e único álbum do grupo, que foi lançado em 1978 sob o título "Première vision de l'étrange". Algum tempo depois disso, no final da década ou início dos anos 80, a banda provavelmente se separou.

O álbum "Première vision de l'étrange" foi produzido em uma edição de 1.000 cópias pela própria banda e é bastante raro obter o vinil original. Até o momento, o material não foi relançado em CD ou de outra forma. Bootlegs existem, no entanto.

Em uma entrevista de 2009 que pode ser encontrada na rede mundial, Valette cita Zao, Art Zoyd, Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North e a Mahavishnu Orchestra como influenciadoras da música da Ocarinah. Na verdade, apesar da formação de power trio (teclado-baixo-bateria), não há um trio-prog clássico à la ELP em "Première vision de l'étrange", mas um progressivo de jazz complexo influenciado nos movimentos Canterbury e leves referências do Zeuhl.

Deslizamento e assobio de spacy, para execuções de sintetizador velozes e vibrantes, são produzidos por Valette (além disso, existem ocasionalmente alguns interlúdios de filigrana na guitarra elétrica - especialmente na segunda metade de "m²c"), que se elevam acima da agitação dinâmica de baixo e bateria. Os primeiros álbuns da Egg poderiam ser usados como uma comparação, sendo que "Première vision de l'étrange" já deve ser destacado que foi feito na segunda metade dos anos 70, especialmente os poderosos sons de sintetizador. Ao mesmo tempo, a coisa toda respira um espírito experimental francês semelhante, como pode ser visto, por exemplo, na Shylock ("Ile de Fièvre", 1978), Pataphonie ("Le matin blanc", 1978) que atuaram no mesmo tempo, também não até agora em termos de estilo, som, qualidade e instrumentação, ou Potemkine ("Triton", 1977).

"Première vision de l'étrange" é, portanto, um álbum divertido com um power trio fresco, virtuoso e de execução direta, complexo, lúdico e "jazzy-canterburesk-spacey-zeuhligen", que é uma boa adição à coleção prog dos anos 70, não apenas para os completistas franceses. Uma reedição oficial em CD seria, portanto, muito desejável!

Ocarinah came from the city of Oyonnax, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. The band around keyboardist-guitarist Jean-Michel Valette was probably formed in the early 1970s and was active for several years in changing formations that fluctuated between trio and quintet. In November 1977 Valette's trio, bassist Marc Perdix and drummer Charles Bevand recorded the group's first and only album, which was released in 1978 under the title "Première vision de l'étrange". Sometime after that, in the late 1980s or early 1980s, the band probably broke up.

The album "Première vision de l'étrange" was produced in an edition of 1,000 copies by the band itself and it is quite rare to obtain the original vinyl. So far, the material has not been re-released on CD or otherwise. Bootlegs do exist, however.

In a 2009 interview that can be found on the worldwide network, Valette cites Zao, Art Zoyd, Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North and the Mahavishnu Orchestra as influencers of Ocarinah's music. In fact, despite the power trio formation (keyboard-bass-drums), there is not a classic trio-prog à la ELP in "Première vision de l'étrange", but a complex jazz progressive influenced by Canterbury movements and light references of Zeuhl.

Spacy glide and whistle, for fast and vibrant synthesizer runs, are produced by Valette (in addition, there are occasionally some filigree interludes on the electric guitar - especially in the second half of "m²c"), which rise above the dynamic agitation of bass and drums. Despite the small formation, the tonal result turned out to be quite colorful, although we must, of course, note that the compositional means do not change much from piece to piece. However, music oscillates in a varied way between impulsive and complex sections and somewhat more solemn, spherical, fluctuating moments. Egg's first albums could be used as a comparison, and "Première vision de l'étrange" should already be noted that it was made in the second half of the 70s, especially the powerful synth sounds. At the same time, the whole thing breathes a similar French experimental spirit, as can be seen, for example, in Shylock ("Ile de Fièvre", 1978), Pataphonie ("Le matin blanc", 1978) who acted at the same time, also not so far in terms of style, sound, quality and instrumentation, or Potemkine ("Triton", 1977).

"Première vision de l'étrange" is, therefore, a fun album with a fresh, virtuous and straightforward, complex, playful and "jazzy-canterburesk-spacey-zeuhligen" power trio, which is a good addition to the prog collection of 1970s, not just for French completists. An official reissue on CD would therefore be very desirable!
