HISTÓRIA

O grupo Lasting Weep foi formado em 1968 por Jérôme Langlois (guitarra, teclado, clarinete), Alain Bergeron (flauta transversal, saxofone), Mathieu Léger (bateria) e Claude Chapleau (baixo), ainda adolescentes. O nome Lasting Weep é uma adaptação em inglês das palavras "Les sanglots longs" do poema "Chanson d'Automne" de Paul Verlaine. Lasting Weep começa apresentando vários sucessos de blues-rock de artistas como John Mayall, Paul Butterfield e Ten Years After. Eles integram a flauta transversal em sua música antes mesmo de conhecerem o grupo de rock progressivo JethroTull (cujos primeiros sucessos eles irão tocar), e logo começam a criar suas próprias composições. Em 1969, Lasting Weep gravou três longas peças, graças a Vaide e ao entusiasmo de Chuck e Judy Gray do Studio Six. Incapaz de atrair o interesse de uma gravadora, essas peças não viram a luz do dia no vinil. A música da banda estava muito à frente de seu tempo! Lasting Weep venceu várias competições, incluindo a do Collêge Stanislas, e começou a fazer shows em clubes e cafés. O grupo fez o ato de abertura da King Crimson no Collêge Saint-Laurent e participou do Manseau Festival em 1970. O grupo começou a compor uma suíte épica chamada "L'albatros", mas foi dissolvida em 1972. Langlois e Bergeron formaram então Maneige, um grupo muito aclamado. Léger se juntou a Quatuor de Jazz Libre du Québec, Michel Madore e Conventum para finalmente se estabelecer com L'Orchestre Sympathique, enquanto Chapleau tocou com Brégent e formou o grupo Zak.

Cinco anos depois, após suas experiências com os grupos Maneige (1972-76) e Lasting Weep (1968-72), Jérôme Langlois organizou, em 1976, "Le spectacle de l'albatros", reunindo 17 músicos, a trupe mímica Les Enfanis du Paradis, bem como artistas de design visual. Este espetáculo multidisciplinar foi apresentado nos dias 28 e 29 de fevereiro e 1º de março de 1976, com duas apresentações por noite, na Bibliotheque Nationale du Québec em Montreal. Esta suíte musical é uma "pintura sonora" que ilustra o poema épico de Samuel Taylor Coleridge, "The rime of the ancient mariner", e foi escrita principalmente por Langlois durante seu tempo com Lasting Weep por volta de 1970. Este foi um dos maiores eventos da história da música progressiva em Québec.

A primeira peça do show começou com os 17 músicos da platéia. No palco, um enorme papagaio-pássaro, criado pelo artista Jean Guillemette, foi suspenso. STORY

The group Lasting Weep was formed in 1968 by Jérôme Langlois (guitar, keyboard, clarinet), Alain Bergeron (transverse flute, saxophone), Mathieu Léger (drums) and Claude Chapleau (bass), still teenagers. The name Lasting Weep is an English adaptation of the words "Les sanglots longs" from the poem "Chanson d'Automne" by Paul Verlaine. Lasting Weep begins by featuring several blues-rock hits by artists such as John Mayall, Paul Butterfield and Ten Years After. They integrate the transverse flute into their music even before meeting the progressive rock group JethroTull (whose first hits they will play), and soon start creating their own compositions. In 1969, Lasting Weep recorded three feature pieces, thanks to Vaide and the enthusiasm of Chuck and Judy Gray of Studio Six. Unable to attract the interest of a record company, these pieces have not seen the light of day on vinyl. The band's music was way ahead of its time! Lasting Weep won several competitions, including the Collêge Stanislas, and began performing in clubs and cafes. The group performed the opening act for King Crimson at Collêge Saint-Laurent and participated in the Manseau Festival in 1970. The group began composing an epic suite called "L'albatros", but it was dissolved in 1972. Langlois and Bergeron then formed Maneige, a highly acclaimed group. Léger teamed up with Quatuor de Jazz Libre du Québec, Michel Madore and Conventum to finally settle down with L'Orchestre Sympathique, while Chapleau played with Brégent and formed the group Zak.

Five years later, after his experiences with the groups Maneige (1972-76) and Lasting Weep (1968-72), Jérôme Langlois organized, in 1976, "Le spectacle de l'albatros", bringing together 17 musicians, the mime troupe Les Enfanis du Paradis as well as visual design artists. This multidisciplinary show was presented on February 28th and 29th and March 1st 1976, with two performances per night, at the Bibliotheque Nationale du Québec in Montreal. This musical suite is a "sound painting" illustrating Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem "The rime of the ancient mariner" and was written primarily by Langlois during his time with Lasting Weep around 1970. This was one of the greatest. events in the history of progressive music in Québec.

The first piece of the show started with the 17 musicians in the audience. On stage, a huge parrot-bird, created by artist Jean Guillemette, was suspended. The song led the audience through the different phases of Coleridge's poem. When the spell was cast on the team, a solo by five percussionists sounded from five different spots in the room. To ward off bad luck, Les Enfanis du Paradis, as undertaker, took the bride to the stage on a stretcher. The show ended with the resurrection of the "albatross", described in the play "La chanson de v'oiseau des îles", performed by all the musicians and by Raôul Duguay. These shows were professionally recorded and mixed without ever appearing on vinyl. Finally, in 2007, after more than 30 years, most of the musical treasures from Lasting Weep's debut, as well as the music for the epic show "L'albatros", were released on CD by the ProgQuébec label.
