HISTÓRIA

Quando Alice foi formada, seus membros já haviam trabalhado com as conceituadas bandas francesas de blues rock Alan Jack Civilization e We Free, ambas se apresentando em eventos decisivos na história da música francófona: a primeira apareceu no Actuel Festival em Amougies, Bélgica e a última no Premier Festival De Pop Music em Blois, França.

Seu primeiro álbum "Alice", de 1970, é um grande álbum, misturando elementos de folk, psicodélico e rock progressivo. A formação que lançou este álbum e vários singles em 1970 era composta por Jean-Pierre Auffredo (sopros, cordas), Sylvain Duplant (baixo), Alain Weiss (bateria) Bruno Besse (guitarra, percussão, vibrafone) e Alain Suzan (guitarra, teclas, baixo, guitarra, vocal).

O fato de haver vários multi-instrumentistas no grupo aumentou a riqueza textural geral de seu material e, talvez mais importante, facilitou a possibilidade real de espontaneidade quando os músicos ensaiavam ou tocavam ao vivo.

Durante uma curta entrevista na televisão em 1970, Alice fez questão de afirmar que todo o ethos da banda era solto e não convencional a ponto de desprezar suas habilidades. "Nós não somos músicos", diz Suzan. "É sobre quem aparece e toca alguma coisa. Jean-Pierre (Auffredo) é antes de tudo um guitarrista, mas aqui ele está tocando flauta e oboé. Não é nada que estamos tentando mostrar. Eu vou tocar baixo, órgão ou pandeiro... todo mundo está na mesma vibe".

Vindo da banda M.O.T.U.S., o guitarrista Ian David Jelfs se juntou à banda em 1972 para gravar o segundo álbum da banda, "Arrêtez le monde", lançado em 1972 em duas versões: a versão original em francês, e a versão em inglês chamada "All ice". A formação agora era: Paul Semana (guitarras, vocal), Luc Bertin (piano, moog, melotron, vocal), Doudou Weiss (que tocou na Magma, bateria, percussão, vocal) Ian David Jelfs (guitarra, vocal), Alain Suzan (baixo, guitarra, flauta, vocal) e, como convidado, Dominique Blanc-Francard (programação do moog).

O grupo se dissolveu em meados dos anos 70, mas a maioria dos seus membros permaneceu ativa, alguns embarcando em uma carreira solo - o vocalista Alain Suzan - e outros aparecendo em projetos diferentes ou juntando-se a grupos como Alpes, por exemplo.

When Alice was formed its members had previously worked with the well-regarded French blues rock bands Alan Jack Civilization and We Free, both of which performed at watershed events in Francophone musical history: the former appeared at the Actuel Festival at Amougies, Belgium and the latter at the Premier Festival De Pop Music at Blois, France.

Its first album "Alice", from 1970, is a great album, mixing folk, psychedelic and progressive rock elements. The line-up that released this album and several singles in 1970 comprised Jean-Pierre Auffredo (woodwinds, strings), Sylvain Duplant (bass), Alain Weiss (drums) Bruno Besse (guitar, percussion, vibraphone) and Alain Suzan (guitar, keys, bass, guitar, vocal).

The fact that there were several multi-instrumentalists in the group enhanced the overall textural richness of its material, and, perhaps more importantly, facilitated the real possibility of spontaneity when the players either rehearsed or played live.

During a short television interview in 1970 Alice made a point of stating that the band's whole ethos was loose and unconventional to the point of being dismissive of its abilities. "We're not musicians at all", says Suzan. "It's about whoever turns up and just plays something. Jean-Pierre (Auffredo) is first and foremost a guitarrist, but here he's playing flute and oboe. It's not at all that we're trying to show off though. I'll play bass, organ or tambourine... everybody is just on the same vibe".

Coming from the band M.O.T.U.S., guitarist Ian David Jelfs joined the band in 1972 to record the band's second album, "Arrêtez le monde", released in 1972 in two versions: the original French version, and the English version called "All ice". The line-up now was: Paul Semana (guitars, vocals), Luc Bertin (piano, moog, melotron, vocals), Doudou Weiss (who played on Magma, drums, percussion, vocals) Ian David Jelfs (guitar, vocals), Alain Suzan (bass, guitar, flute, vocals) and, as a guest, Dominique Blanc-Francard (moog programming).

The group dissolved in the mid-70s, but most of its members remained active, some embarking on a solo career - vocalist Alain Suzan - and others appearing in different projects or joining groups like Alpes, for example.
