Druid (Progressive Rock {UK})

Druid foi uma banda inglesa de rock progressivo dos anos 1970, e inicialmente chamou a atenção do público ao vencer um concurso de bandas independentes em 1974 pela revista Melody Maker. A banda passou a se apresentar no "The Old Grey Whistle Test" e a gravar dois álbuns. Seu som foi notavelmente influenciado pela Yes.

HISTÓRIA

Druid foi formada em Hertfordshire, em  1971. Seus membros fundadores foram Dane Stevens (guitar, vocal), Cedric Sharpley (nascido na África do Sul, imigrou para Hertfordshire na final da década de 1960) e Neil Brewer (baixo). Inicialmente eles formaram a banda de rock Maggot, que atuava na região, principalmente se apresentando em clubes. Em 1973, um ano após iniciar suas atividades, eles ingressaram no evento para bandas independentes Melody Maker Rock and Folk Talent, co-organizado pela revista Melody Maker.

No ano seguinte, em 1974, eles se inscreveram novamente no evento da Melody Maker, conquistando o direito de participar das rodadas finais que foram disputadas no clube Roundman Bows de Londres. A banda disputou contra 13 grupos de bandas e 5 grupos de artistas solo e venceu o campeonato. O concurso foi liderado pela celebridade da BBC Bob Harris, junto com Roy Wood, Clifford T. Ward, Elkie Brooks. Os produtores da EMI Martin Clarke e Wally Aller estavam entre os juízes. O vencedor recebeu £500 para a compra de um instrumento, com prêmios adicionais como ir ao ar na Capital Radio, aparecer na capa da Melody Maker, além de um presente da EMI. 

No final de 1974, eles decidiram se mudar para Londres e entregar a gestão ao promotor Larry Westland. Westland sugeriu adicionar um tecladista para ampliar o som e trouxe Andrew McCrorie-Shand (teclados) do London College of Music. A banda agora passou a ter uma formação de 4 pessoas e a se chamar Druid. Eles gravam uma fita demo para a EMI e começam uma série de apresentações, viajando por toda a Inglaterra. Entre muitas de suas performances, há uma aparição no "The Old Grey Whistle Test" da BBC.

TOWARD THE SUN E FLUID DRUID

Depois de eles se tornarem um quarteto e surpreenderem os produtores da EMI com a alta qualidade de sua primeira fita demo, a EMI os aconselha a começar imediatamente as gravações de seu primeiro LP. Para a banda, houveram momentos confusos, mas eles conseguiram completar o álbum. "Toward the sun", seu trabalho de estréia, contou com a produção de Bob Harris. Devido a atrasos na conclusão da arte da capa, o álbum foi lançado em julho de 1975. Uma festa de inauguração organizada pela EMI foi realizada no Sheverton Film Studios para coincidir com o lançamento.

"Toward the sun", entrou no topo das paradas de álbuns. Nenhuma música do álbum foi lançada como single. Então, o álbum não foi bem conhecido pelo público em geral. Druid percorreu todos os cantos do circuito de clubes na Inglaterra e tornou sua presença conhecida, mas as estações de rádio importantes não tocavam ativamente sua música. Não que a música deles fosse ruim, mas eles simplesmente não queriam escolher artistas estreantes devido ao conluio entre a Melody Maker e a BBC.

Almejando mais um salto, Druid deu início à produção de seu segundo álbum. Desta vez, decidiram terminar o álbum sozinhos, sem a ajuda de Bob Harris. A razão, é claro, era colocar as músicas no ar em muitas emissoras. Seu segundo álbum, "Fluid Druid", foi lançado em abril de 1976. A revista britânica Sounds fez uma campanha para que o público pudesse assistir aos shows da Druid pela metade do preço, mas ao mesmo tempo, a revista Sounds apresentou a Sex Pistols, fazendo com que o rock progressivo da Druid perdesse completamente seu lugar. "Fluid Druid" foi um trabalho muito bom, mas a banda foi forçada a se separar sem ser devidamente avaliada.

DEPOIS DA DRUID

Após o fim da Druid, Neil Brewer e Dane Stevens formaram a Never Never Band, que tinha uma abordagem mais comercial.

O baixista Neil Brewer foi o terceiro e último apresentador do programa de TV infantil Rosie and Jim de 1997 a 2000.

Andrew McCrorie-Shand compôs para a série de televisão infantil britânica "Teletubbies", criada por Anne Wood e Andrew Davenport para a BBC.

O ex-membro Cedric Sharpley, que apoiou Gary Numan na banda Tubeway Army, morreu de ataque cardíaco em 13 de março de 2012. 

Cedric Sharpley, Neil Brewer e Andrew McCrorie-Shand tocaram juntos ao vivo sob os nomes de Boozer Daddy e Tinderfish.

Druid was an English progressive rock band from the 1970s, and initially came to public attention by winning a 1974 independent band contest by Melody Maker magazine. The band went on to perform at "The Old Grey Whistle Test" and record two albums. Their sound was notably influenced by Yes.

HISTORY

Druid was formed in Hertfordshire in 1971. Its founding members were Dane Stevens (guitar, vocals), Cedric Sharpley (born in South Africa, immigrated to Hertfordshire in the late 1960s) and Neil Brewer (bass). Initially they formed the rock band Maggot, which performed in the region, mostly playing in clubs. In 1973, a year after starting their activities, they joined the event for independent bands Melody Maker Rock and Folk Talent, co-organized by Melody Maker magazine.

The following year, in 1974, they entered the Melody Maker event again, earning the right to participate in the final rounds that were played at the Roundman Bows club in London. The band competed against 13 groups of bands and 5 groups of solo artists and won the championship. The contest was led by BBC celebrity Bob Harris, along with Roy Wood, Clifford T. Ward, Elkie Brooks. EMI producers Martin Clarke and Wally Aller were among the judges. The winner received £500 towards the purchase of an instrument, with additional prizes including airing on Capital Radio, appearing on the cover of Melody Maker, plus a gift from EMI.

At the end of 1974 they decided to move to London and hand over management to promoter Larry Westland. Westland suggested adding a keyboard player to amplify the sound, and brought in Andrew McCrorie-Shand (keyboards) from the London College of Music. The band now has a 4-piece line-up and is called Druid. They record a demo tape for EMI and begin a series of gigs, touring across England. Among many of his performances is an appearance on BBC's "The Old Grey Whistle Test".

TOWARD THE SUN AND FLUID DRUID

After they became a quartet and surprised EMI producers with the high quality of their first demo tape, EMI advised them to start recording their first LP immediately. For the band, there were confusing moments, but they managed to complete the album. "Toward the sun", his debut work, was produced by Bob Harris. Due to delays in completing the cover art, the album was released in July 1975. A housewarming party organized by EMI was held at Sheverton Film Studios to coincide with the release.

"Toward the sun" entered the top of the album charts. No songs from the album were released as singles. So, the album was not well known by the general public. Druid toured every corner of the club circuit in England and made his presence known, but major radio stations were not actively playing his music. Not that their music was bad, but they just didn't want to pick newcomers due to collusion between Melody Maker and the BBC.

Aiming for another leap, Druid started the production of his second album. This time, they decided to finish the album themselves, without the help of Bob Harris. The reason, of course, was to get the songs aired on many stations. Their second album, "Fluid Druid", was released in April 1976. British magazine Sounds ran a campaign so that the public could attend Druid concerts for half price, but at the same time, Sounds magazine introduced the Sex Pistols, causing Druid's progressive rock to completely lose its place. "Fluid Druid" was a very good work, but the band was forced to break up without being properly evaluated.

AFTER DRUID

After Druid disbanded, Neil Brewer and Dane Stevens formed the Never Never Band, which had a more commercial approach.

Bassist Neil Brewer was the third and final host of the children's TV show Rosie and Jim from 1997 to 2000.

Andrew McCrorie-Shand composed for the British children's television series "Teletubbies", created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport for the BBC.

Former member Cedric Sharpley, who supported Gary Numan in the band Tubeway Army, died of a heart attack on March 13, 2012.

Cedric Sharpley, Neil Brewer and Andrew McCrorie-Shand have played together live under the names Boozer Daddy and Tinderfish.
