Stone the Crows (Blues Rock {Escócia/UK})

Stone the Crows foi uma banda escocesa de blues rock formada em Glasgow no final de 1969. Além da marcante performance vocal de Maggie Bell, a banda também é lembrada pela eletrocussão no palco que causou a morte do guitarrista e membro fundador Les Harvey.

HISTÓRIA

INÍCIO

Maggie Bell nasceu em 12 de janeiro de 1945, em Glasgow, na Escócia. Vinda de uma família de músicos, ela cantou desde sua adolescência, deixando a escola com 15 anos de idade, para trabalhar como vitrinista durante o dia e cantora durante a noite. Mark London foi associado a cantora escocesa Lulu, como co-autor de sua canção "To Sir, with love", e também foi casado com a empresária de Lulu, Marion Massey. Mark London também havia administrado a banda Cartoone, na qual Peter Grant tinha interesse financeiro e apresentava Les Harvey na guitarra - no segundo ábum, "Reflections", de 1969, que não foi lançado.

SEGUNDA FORMAÇÃO E MORTE NO PALCO DE LES HARVEY

John McGinnis e James Dewar deixaram a banda em 1971, e foram substituídos por Ronnie Leahy e Steve Thompson. Com a nova formação a banda grava "Teenage licks", lançado em novembro de 1971. Aqui, a banda muda seu estilo de forma considerável, abandonando um pouco o blues rock em favor de um som mais comercial. O disco foi o mais vendido da banda até então, o que garantiu uma aparição no prestigiado Top Of The Pops, onde se apresentaram tocando a faixa "Big Jim Salter".

Em maio de 1972, enquanto a banda se apresentava no Top Rank Suite, em Swansea, o guitarrista e co-fundador Les Harvey foi eletrocutado no palco. Os fios do equipamento do grupo haviam sido danificados pelo público e, embora a equipe de estrada tenha tentado consertar o dano, eles ignoraram um fio terra que estava solto.

Harvey recebeu um choque elétrico ao pegar um microfone enquanto seus dedos tocavam as cordas de metal da sua guitarra. DEPOIS DA STONE THE CROWS

Stone the Crows finalmente se separou em junho de 1973, e Peter Grant continuou a administrar a carreira de Maggie Bell. Stone the Crows was a Scottish blues rock band formed in Glasgow in late 1969. In addition to Maggie Bell's remarkable vocal performance, the band is also remembered for the onstage electrocution that caused the death of guitarist and founding member Les Harvey.

HISTORY

BEGINNINGS

Maggie Bell was born on January 12, 1945 in Glasgow, Scotland. Coming from a family of musicians, she has been singing since her teens, leaving school at the age of 15 to work as a window dresser by day and singer by night. Maggie Bell was introduced to Leslie Harvey by her older brother Alex Harvey, after taking the stage to sing with Alex. Leslie Harvey was, at that time, guitarist for the Kinning Park Ramblers. Maggie Bell joined the group as one of the vocalists. After the band broke up, she moved on to Sauchiehall Street Locarno's Mecca Band, and later Dennistoun's Palais Band.

She then reunited with Leslie Harvey to form Power - which was initially known as The Power of Music and eventually The Power. Maggie Bell and The Power performed regularly on The Easterhouse Project, directed by Archie Hind and Graeme Noble. They also visited the US Air Force base in Germany in the mid-1960s. The line-up included Les Harvey (guitar), Jim Dewar (bass, ex-Luvvers) and John McGinnis (keyboards). Power became the "house band" at Burn's Howff in Glasgow, and it was there that, one night, Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant watched in amazement as the group performed.

The band then came to be co-managed by Peter Grant and Mark London. Mark London was associated with Scottish singer Lulu, as co-author of her song "To Sir with love", and was also married to Lulu's manager, Marion Massey. Mark London had also managed the band Cartoone, in which Peter Grant had a financial interest and featured Les Harvey on guitar - on the second album, "Reflections", from 1969, which was not released.

The band's first album "Stone the Crows" was released on January 1, 1970 and was recorded at Advision Studios, London. The same studio was used for the recording of the second album, "Ode to John Law", released on June 15 of the same year. Both albums were recorded with the original lineup, and Maggie Bell's vocals have been compared to singer Janis Joplin's vocals. The band's lineup at this time was: Maggie Bell (vocal), Les Harvey (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), James Dewar (bass, vocal) and John McGinnis (keyboards).

SECOND FORMATION AND DEATH ONSTAGE OF LES HARVEY

John McGinnis and James Dewar left the band in 1971, and were replaced by Ronnie Leahy and Steve Thompson. With the new formation, the band records "Teenage licks", released in November 1971. Here, the band changes its style considerably, abandoning blues rock in favor of a more commercial sound. The album was the band's best seller so far, which guaranteed an appearance on the prestigious Top Of The Pops, where they performed playing the track "Big Jim Salter".

In May 1972, while the band were performing at Swansea's Top Rank Suite, guitarist and co-founder Les Harvey was electrocuted onstage. Wires on the group's equipment had been damaged by the public, and although the road crew attempted to repair the damage, they ignored a loose ground wire.

Harvey received an electric shock picking up a microphone as his fingers touched the metal strings of his guitar. His body allegedly flew into the air and came to rest with his guitar in contact with the microphone stand. Bandmates who tried to rescue him allegedly received some of the electrical charge and it was not possible to rescue him until someone kicked his guitar away from the body so that medical staff were able to provide help. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital. Jimmy McCulloch subsequently replaced Harvey as guitarist.

With a new guitarist on board, Stone the Crows finished recording their fourth LP, which was already well under way. Jimmy McCulloch only plays on the tracks "Good time girl" and "Sunset cowboy". "Ontinuous performance", was released in September 1972 and was dedicated to the late guitarist Leslie Harvey. In terms of production, this is the band's best album.

AFTER STONE THE CROWS

Stone the Crows finally disbanded in June 1973, and Peter Grant continued to manage Maggie Bell's career. Guided by Grant, Maggie Bell subsequently recorded two solo albums - "Queen of the night" (1974) and "Suicide Sal" (1975) - and an album with the band Midnight Flyer, managed by Grant, which released its first album in 1981 Maggie Bell is also known for her session work on Rod Stewart's 1971 album "Every picture tells a story". Jimmy McCulloch joined Paul McCartney's Wings in Nashville, Tennessee in 1974.
