Mad Dog foi formada em Bay City, Michigan, em 1973 e consistia em Robert Charlebois (nascido em Bay City em 1957) no vocal principal, guitarra, piano, harpa e sax, Joe Charlebois (nascido em Bay City em 1954) na bateria e apoio vocal e Don Langenburg (nascido em Bay City em 1949) no baixo. O grupo tinha um caldeirão de influências que incluía o som da Motown, o blues inglês, o blues e o metal americano, bem como as grandes bandas de rock 'n' roll que surgiram em Detroit no final dos anos 1960.

Em 1974, Mad Dog foi convidada a abrir para Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band e MC5 no Skidway Lake Music Festival. A banda tocou todo o material original e estava fazendo seu nome. Em 1975, a banda foi novamente convidada a abrir para Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band em Saginaw, Michigan, em um clube chamado Hidden Hollow. Em 1976, Mad Dog gravou seu primeiro álbum.

Após uma viagem a Nova York e uma série de cartas de rejeição das grandes gravadoras, a banda lançou o álbum em 1977. Depois de lutar por dez anos tocando até 250 shows por ano, a banda se separou em 1983. Em 2006, no 30º aniversário da gravação de "617", o álbum foi lançado em formato CD. O lançamento do CD pela Mr. Nobody Records em 2005 é ilegal. Mad Dog was formed in Bay City, Michigan in 1973 and consisted of Robert Charlebois (born in Bay City in 1957) on lead vocal, guitar, piano, harp and sax, Joe Charlebois (born in Bay City in 1954) on drums and backing vocal, and Don Langenburg (born in Bay City in 1949) on bass. The group had a melting pot of influences which included the Motown sound, English blues, American blues and metal, as well as the great  rock 'n' roll bands coming out of Detroit in the late 1960's.  

In 1974,  Mad Dog was asked to open for Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band and MC5 at the Skidway Lake Music Festival. The band played all original material and was making a name for itself. In 1975 the band was again asked to open for Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band in Saginaw, Michigan, at a club called Hidden Hollow. In 1976 Mad Dog recorded its first album.

After a trip to New York and a slew of rejection letters from the major labels, the band released the record in 1977. The album received airplay and made numerouscollege radio station playlists during 1977 -1978. Commercial radio was not into music this heavy at the time.  Distribution was a problem and the internet did not exist. Indie labels were few and far between. Mad Dog recorded its 2nd album in 1980 and so far it has not been released. 

After slugging it out for ten years playing up to 250 dates a year, the band broke up in 1983. In 2006, on the 30th anniversary of the recording of "617", the album was released on CD format. The CD release by Mr. Nobody Records in 2005 is illegal.
