The Attack - Magic in the air [1966-1967] - 1992 (Psychedelic Acid Rock {UK})

The Attack foi uma banda inglesa de freakbeat e rock psicodélico ácido formada em 1966 em torno do cantor Richard Shirman (26 de abril de 1949, Londres - 26 de julho de 2017). A primeira formação contou com o baterista Alan Whitehead da Marmalade, o guitarrista e trompetista David O'List (mais tarde da The Nice) - mais tarde substituído por John Du Cann (mais tarde da Andromeda e Atomic Rooster) -, Richard Shirman no vocal, Bob Hodges no piano e órgão e finalmente Gerry Henderson no baixo. Seu primeiro single "Try it" também foi gravado pela The Standells e The Ohio Express. A banda também lançou uma versão de "Hi-ho, silver lining", alguns dias antes de Jeff Beck. Richard Shirman foi convidado para ser cantor do Andromeda, mas recusou.

Em 1979, Shirman reuniu a The Attack. Dois anos depois fundou outra banda, Hershey and The 12 Bars, que lançou um álbum em 2000: "Greatest hits volume II" (A New Day Records, E CD43).

HISTÓRIA

Embora tenha lançado apenas alguns singles, a carreira de The Attack foi inegavelmente complexa. Suas raízes estão em Richard Shirman e Gerry Henderson, que estavam em um grupo chamado The Soul System em 1965. Vários membros saíram e se juntaram até a formação resultante, no final de 1966, de Richard (vocal), Gerry (baixo), Bob Hodges (órgão), Alan Whitehead emprestado pela Marmalade (bateria) e David John (guitarra). David John era, na realidade, Dave O'List, que se juntou à The Soul System após sua chance inicial de estrelato como David John & The Mood. "Try it" foi gravada por The Standells e The Ohio Express, sendo a versão deste último um tour-de-force da American Garagelands. The Attack lançou sua versão em janeiro de 67, e tocou o número com uma força pulsante de freak beat, dando-lhe um som inglês e uma sensação de "Birds".

A sequência contou com a mesma formação e foi uma versão contundente de "Hi-ho, silver lining" - uma música de sua apresentação no palco que foi (presumivelmente) ouvida por Jeff Beck, já que sua versão saiu um assunto de dias depois deles. Como a versão de Beck era um tratamento muito mais pop, ela ganhou o dia e conquistou honras nas paradas subsequentes.

The Attack teria sido melhor aconselhada a empurrar o lado B: "Anymore than I do", escrita pelo grupo e por um roqueiro furioso e agressivo. O'List dispara algumas linhas de guitarra emocionantes. John Peel usou a faixa como base para um jingle de rádio enquanto era DJ no navio pirata Radio London.

A banda levou o fracasso a sério e todo o grupo se desintegrou um mês após seu lançamento. Davy O'List juntou-se à The Nice, Alan Whitehead voltou à Marmalade e Bob e Gerry desapareceram na obscuridade. Richard Shirman permaneceu e construiu uma nova The Attack do zero. A sequência de "Hi-ho, silver lining" contou com George Watt da Escócia (órgão), Chris Allen (bateria), Geoff Richardson (guitarra) e Kenny Harold (baixo).

Com o conflito de Jeff Beck ainda fresco na mente de todos, praticamente a mesma situação surgiu no lançamento do terceiro single: "Created by Clive". Desta vez, porém, pareceu ser devido a um erro corporativo, quando uma versão da mesma música foi lançada no canal alternativo da Decca, Deram, no mesmo dia. Ambas as versões se cancelaram. Na verdade, foi uma pena, já que a atmosfera ultrajante de inglês e atrevida de "Dedicated follower of fashion" era perfeita para a King's Road de 1967. Clive, um estilista especializado em vestir garotas com minivestidos transparentes, provavelmente teria processado de qualquer forma.

Geoff Richardson provou ser um verdadeiro achado, no entanto, ao exibir no outro lado: "Colour of my mind". Suas linhas cítricas complementaram o órgão para criar um clima estranho e o grupo provou que poderia escrever boas músicas originais. O single estava nas lojas há apenas alguns dias quando o grupo adicionou outro guitarrista - John DuCann -, e substituiu o tecladista e o baterista por Ken & Plug respectivamente (nomes reais perdidos nas brumas do tempo!). Eles entraram em estúdio em agosto e gravaram duas faixas para o próximo single: "Magic in the air/Lady Orange Peel". "Magic in the air" foi posteriormente rejeitada por ser muito pesada - e a banda foi enviada de volta para gravar "Neville thumbcatch". Mais duas faixas foram gravadas em outubro: "Morning dew/Loving you is sweeter than ever" - mas foi "Neville thumbcatch", acompanhada da fofa "Lady Orange Peel" que foi finalmente lançada em janeiro de 68. Ambas as faixas apresentam linhas de guitarra elegantes e letras inteligentes com aquele toque inglês - é de se perguntar que impacto teria causado "Magic in the air".

Mais uma vez, quando o single foi lançado, o grupo se desfez, deixando Richard Shirman e John DuCann recrutando novos membros. A banda encontrou um novo baixista (Roger Deane) e um baterista (Keith Hodge) e continuou como um quarteto. Mais sessões foram organizadas, no início do ano, para o álbum que recebeu o título: "Roman god of war". As faixas incluíam "Winding up clocks" e "Just waiting" (que agora parecem estar perdidas para sempre), e outro single foi gravado em março: "Fee/Like flying/Freedom for you". Nenhuma data foi definida para seu lançamento e, apesar de outras sessões do álbum, quando "Mr. Pinnodmy's dilemma" e "Strange house" foram lançadas, nada mais foi lançado em vinil.

O grupo finalmente se separou em meados de 1968, com a Decca aparentemente colocando tudo em segundo plano. Richard e John gravaram algumas demos com Billy Nichols (para Immediate), depois John e Roger Deane se uniram a um cabeleireiro italiano (e seus amigos Guy e David) para gravar o álbum "Five Day Week Straw People" para o selo Saga. Esse álbum também conta com Jack McCulloch (bateria e irmão de Jimmy), e foi gravado, como todos os lançamentos da Saga, em uma Playschool em St. John's Wood, em equipamento portátil depois que as crianças foram para casa.

Com o projeto resolvido, DuCann e Deane recrutaram Richard Shirman novamente para formar a Andromeda. Shirman saiu quase imediatamente, e assim, com um novo vocalista e baterista, Andromeda assinou contrato com a RCA, lançando uma reformulação de "Go your way" da The Attack, e um álbum incrível.

The Attack was an English freakbeat and acid psychedelic rock band formed in 1966 around singer Richard Shirman (26 April 1949, London - 26 July 2017). The first line-up featured drummer Alan Whitehead from Marmalade, guitarist and trumpeter David O'List (later of The Nice) - later replaced by John Du Cann (later of Andromeda and Atomic Rooster) -, Richard Shirman on vocal, Bob Hodges on piano and organ and finally Gerry Henderson on bass. Its first single "Try it" had also been recorded by The Standells and The Ohio Express. The band also released a version of "Hi-ho, silver lining", a few days earlier than Jeff Beck. Richard Shirman was invited to be singer with Andromeda but he declined.

In 1979, Shirman reunited The Attack. Two years later he founded another band, Hershey and The 12 Bars, who released an album in 2000: "Greatest hits volume II" (A New Day Records, AND CD43).

HISTORY

Although it only released a handful of singles, the career of The Attack was an undeniably complex affair. Its roots lie with Richard Shirman and Gerry Henderson who were in a group called The Soul System in 1965. Various members left and joined until the resultant, late '66, line-up of Richard (vocal), Gerry (bass), Bob Hodges (organ), Alan Whitehead on loan from Marmalade (drums) and David John (guitar), stabilised. David John was, in reality, Dave O'List, who had joined The Soul System after his initial shot at stardom as David John & The Mood. The System came to the attention of top agent Don Arden who, on signing the band, found to it its first single ("Try it") and a name: The Attack.

"Try it" had been recorded by both The Standells and The Ohio Express, the latters' rendition being an American Garagelands' tour-de-force. The Attack issued its version in January '67, and perform the number with a brittle freak beat pulsating force, giving it an English sound and a "Birds" feel.

The follow-up featured the same line-up, and was a hard biting version of "Hi-ho, silver lining" - a song from their stage act which was (presumably) heard by Jeff Beck, as his version came out a matter of days after theirs. As Beck's version was a far more poppier treatment it won the day and claimed subsequent chart honours.

The Attack would have been better advised to push the B-side: "Anymore than I do", written by the group and a furious hard-edged rocker. O'List fires off some blistering guitar lines. John Peel used the track as a basis for a radio jingle while he was DJ on the pirate Radio London ship.

The band took failure to its hearts and the whole group disintegrated a month after its release. Davy O'List joined The Nice, Alan Whitehead re-joined Marmalade, and Bob and Gerry faded into obscurity. Richard Shirmanremained and he built a new The Attack from scratch. The follow-up to "Hi-ho, silver lining" featured George Watt from Scotland (organ), Chris Allen (drums), Geoff Richardson (guitar) and Kenny Harold (bass).

With the Jeff Beck clash still fresh in everybody's mind virtually the same situation arose on the release of the third single: "Created by Clive". This time, however, it seemed due to corporate blunder, when a version of the same song was issued on Decca's alternative outlet Deram on the same day. Both versions cancelled each other out. It was indeed a pity as the outrageous Englishness and impudent "Dedicated follower of fashion" atmosphere was just right for the King's Road of 1967. Clive, a fashion designer who specialised in dressing debs in see-through mini-dresses, would probably have sued anyway.

Geoff Richardson proved to be a real find, however, as he displayed on the flipside: "Colour of my mind". His sitaresque lines complemented the pumping organ to create a strange mood and the group proved that they could write good original music. The single had only been in the shops a matter of days when the group added another guitarist - John DuCann -, and replaced the keyboard player and drummer with Ken & Plug respectively (actual names lost in the mists of time!). This new line-up gigged extensively, playing the Speakeasy, Middle Earth, Tiles, and all the other colourful one-nighters that existed.

Summer '67 saw Geoff Richardson and Kenny Harold depart, and a new bass player join: one Jim Avery (who would eventually re-appear with the Third World War on Track Records). They entered the studio in August and recorded two tracks for the next single: "Magic in the air/ Lady Orange Peel". "Magic in the air" was later rejected as being too heavy - and the band were sent back to record "Neville thumbcatch". Two more tracks were recorded in October: "Morning dew/Loving you is sweeter than ever" - but it was "Neville thumbcatch", backed with the cute "Lady Orange Peel" that was eventually released in January '68. Both tracks boast some neat guitar lines and clever lyrics with that English feel - one wonders what impact "Magic in the air" would have made.

Once more, as the single was issued the group disbanded, leaving Richard Shirman and John DuCann to recruit new members. The band found a new bass player (Roger Deane) and a drummer (Keith Hodge) and continued as a four piece. More sessions were arranged, in the early part of the year, for the album which had been given a title: "Roman god of war". Tracks included "Winding up clocks" and "Just waiting" (which now seem to be lost forever), and another single was recorded in March: "Fee/Like flying/Freedom for you". No date was set for its release, and despite further album sessions, when "Mr. Pinnodmy's dilemma" and "Strange house" were laid down, nothing more was issued on vinyl.

The group finally split mid ‘68, with Decca seemingly putting everything on the back-burner. Richard and John recorded some demos with Billy Nichols (for Immediate), then John and Roger Deane teamed up with an Italian hairdresser (and his friends Guy and David) to record the album "Five Day Week Straw People" for Saga label. That album also features Jack McCulloch (drums, and brother of Jimmy), and was recorded, like all Saga releases, in a Playschool in St. John's Wood, on portable equipment after the kids had gone home.

That project out of the way, DuCann and Deane recruited Richard Shirman again to form Andromeda. Shirman left almost immediately, and so, with a new vocalist and drummer, Andromeda signed to RCA, releasing a reworking of The Attack's "Go your way", and an amazing album.
