HISTÓRIA

Isaiah foi uma obscura banda austríaca de jazz-rock de Innsbruck (cidade no oeste da Áustria, capital do estado do Tirol) que se formou em 1971 e passou os anos seguintes em turnê com alguns shows notáveis ​​junto a Nazareth e Man, mas não lançou este álbum de estréia até 1975. No entanto, algumas de suas apresentações foram registradas na CBS.

A banda começou como um quarteto, e logo depois, foram acrescentados um quinto e sexto membros. A formação consistiam em: Gerd Raabe (voz, flauta, violão, percussão), Edu Weber (guitarra solo, guitarra de 12 cordas, vocais de apoio), Hans Gasser (baixo), Walter Reschauer (bateria), Hubertus K. Nolte (teclados, vocal de apoio) e Michael Bornhorst (saxophone tenor, clarinete).

Vinda de um país de língua alemã, Isaiah não dá nenhuma indicação como tal e, apesar da ser frequentemente rotulada como uma banda de krautrock/fusion, não soa como tal. Na verdade, as faixas que são todas cantadas em inglês soam bem americanas, dadas as influências do soul e do funk. “Afterwards” e “Prophet” que apesar de também serem soulful e funky ainda mantêm um pouco de complexidade progressiva. O álbum é basicamente impulsionado por riffs de guitarra, especialmente enraizados no rock e funk padrão, mas a inclusão do trompete e flugelhorn leva isso para o mundo do jazz e os aspectos da flauta dão ao álbum uma sensação pastoral do tipo Genesis, especialmente na faixa mais psicodélica "Afterwards".

Este é um álbum bastante decente, pois todas as músicas são bem elaboradas e exibem melodias imediatamente agradáveis. Os músicos são todos muito bons em seus respectivos instrumentos, e até mesmo os vocais de Gerd Raabe funcionam muito bem no contexto desse estilo de jazz-rock, mas ao mesmo tempo não há nada realmente notável em Isaiah, já que essa banda soa como muitas outras bandas da época, produzindo exatamente o mesmo estilo de rock com sabor de jazz e alguns toques progressivos.

A gravadora também não se mostrou impressionada com o LP, e se recusou a lançar um segundo álbum. O desinteresse da gravadora, além do fato de a banda ser austríaca - e isto a deixou de fora das nações que pareciam ter um canal melhor para promover bandas -, levou a banda a se separar em 1979, tendo material extra suficiente para um segundo álbum. Álbum este que não veria a luz do dia até que - finalmente - em 2014, "Isaiah" foi relançado em um formato remasterizado, com um segundo disco contendo todos os itens inéditos que deveriam constituir o segundo álbum.

Mesmo não sendo uma obra-prima do rock progressivo, este é um álbum que me agrada muito. E das cinco faixas que compõem o disco, as minhas favoritas são "Leave it all behind" e "Afterwards". Do CD bônus da versão de 2014, destaco as faixas "Playing the circle game" e a belíssima "Sunset". Mas há outras faixas muito interessantes também. HISTORY

Isaiah was an obscure Austrian jazz-rock band from Innsbruck (city in western Austria, capital from the state of Tyrol) who graduated in 1971 and spent the next few years touring with some notable shows alongside Nazareth and Man, but did not release this debut album until 1975. However, some of their performances were recorded on CBS.

The band started as a quartet, and soon after, a fifth and sixth members were added. The line-up consisted of: Gerd Raabe (vocals, flute, acústico guitar, percussion), Edu Weber (lead guitar, 12-string guitar, backing vocals), Hans Gasser (bass), Walter Reschauer (drums, percussion), Hubertus K. Nolte (teclados, vocal de apoio) and Michael Bornhorst (tenor de saxofone, clarinete).

Hailing from a German-speaking country, Isaiah gives no indication as such and, despite being often labeled a krautrock/fusion band, it doesn't sound like such. In fact, the tracks that are all sung in English sound very American, given the soul and funk influences. “Afterwards” and “Prophet” which although also soulful and funky still retain a bit of progressive complexity. The album is basically driven by guitar riffs, especially rooted in standard rock and funk, but the inclusion of trumpet and flugelhorn takes this into the jazz world and the flute aspects give the album a pastoral Genesis-type feel, especially on the track more psychedelic "Afterwards".

This is a pretty decent album, as all the songs are well-crafted and feature immediately pleasing melodies. The musicians are all very good on their respective instruments, and even Gerd Raabe's vocals work very well in the context of this jazz-rock style, but at the same time there's nothing really notable about Isaiah, as this band sounds like so many other bands at the time, producing exactly the same style of rock with a jazz flavor and some progressive touches.

The record label was also unimpressed with the LP, and refused to release a second album. The record label's disinterest, in addition to the fact that the band is Austrian - and this left them out of nations that seemed to have a better channel to promote bands - led the band to break up in 1979, having enough extra material for a second album. An album that wouldn't see the light of day until - finally - that in 2014, "Isaiah" was re-released in a remastered format, with a second disc containing all the previously unreleased items that were supposed to make up the second album.

Even though it's not a prog rock masterpiece, this is an album that I really like. And of the five tracks that make up the record, my favorites are "Leave it all behind" and "Afterwards". From the bonus CD of the 2014 version, I highlight the tracks "Playing the circle game" and the beautiful "Sunset". But there are other very interesting tracks too.
