Canamii - Concept - 1980 (Symphonic Progressive Rock {África do Sul})

O nome Canamii foi derivado dos signos de Philip Nel (signo de Câncer) e Claire Whittaker (signo de Gêmeos). Tanto Claire Whittaker quanto Philip Nel trabalharam para a EMI como engenheiros - Claire Whittaker sendo uma engenheira de masterização de fitas e Philip Nel sendo um engenheiro de estúdio. Philip Nel tornou-se engenheiro-chefe da EMI (SA) e engenheiro chefe da Downtown Studios (Gallo Africa).

Embora não seja originalmente parte do conceito inicial, Paul Woodley foi convidado a participar do projeto por sua influência guitarrística de jazz e rock, como pode ser ouvida nas faixas "Afrock", "The phantom players" e "And the moon be as bright".

O estilo vocal de Claire Whittaker foi bastante influenciado por Annie Haslam, da banda Renaissance. Claire Whittaker também teve outras  influências dos anos 70 em seu estilo vocal.

O forte de Philip Nel estava na programação de sintetizadores como o Synclavier, Fairlight, Jupiter 4, Korg, Moog, RMI e ARP. Philip também estudou piano clássico na Royal Schools of Music e sua maior influência musical foi Emerson, Lake and Palmer, em especial o LP "Tarkus", onde sua influência pode ser ouvida nas faixas "Toccata" e "Tri". Outras influências de Philip Nel foram Rick Wakeman, as bandas Yes e King Crimson, além de compositores clássicos russos, como Rimsky Korsakov, Mussorgsky e Khachaturian.

Tim Kensella, um amigo de longa data de Philip Nel e Claire Whittaker foi convidado a fazer os vocais na faixa "Spiral". Esta faixa também apresenta o sintetizador RMI. Com menos de uma faixa para completar o LP, Philip Nel, Claire Whittaker e Paul Woodley passaram uma noite inteira nos estúdios da EMI e escreveram a faixa "Children", usando apenas a guitarra, um sintetizador Jupiter 4 e a caixa de ritmos Dr Rhythm.

The name Canamii was derived from the zodiac signs Philip Nel (Cancer sign) and Claire Whittaker (Gemini sign). Both Claire Whittaker and Philip Nel worked for EMI as engineers - Claire Whittaker being a tape mastering engineer and Philip Nel being a studio engineer. Philip Nel became Chief Engineer at EMI (SA) and Chief Engineer at Downtown Studios (Gallo Africa).

Although not originally part of the initial concept, Paul Woodley was asked to join the project for his jazz and rock guitar influence, as heard on the tracks "Afrock", "The phantom players" and "And the moon be as bright".

Claire Whittaker's vocal style was heavily influenced by Annie Haslam of the band Renaissance. Claire Whittaker also had other '70s influences in her vocal style.

Philip Nel's forte was programming synthesizers such as the Synclavier, Fairlight, Jupiter 4, Korg, Moog, RMI and ARP. Philip also studied classical piano at the Royal Schools of Music and his biggest musical influence was Emerson, Lake and Palmer, in particular the "Tarkus" LP, where his influence can be heard on the tracks "Toccata" and "Tri". Other Philip Nel influences were Rick Wakeman, the bands Yes and King Crimson, as well as classical Russian composers such as Rimsky Korsakov, Mussorgsky and Khachaturian.

Tim Kensella, a longtime friend of Philip Nel and Claire Whittaker was asked to sing lead vocals on the track "Spiral". This track also features the RMI synthesizer. With less than one track to complete the LP, Philip Nel, Claire Whittaker and Paul Woodley spent an entire night at EMI studios and wrote the track "Children", using only guitar, a Jupiter 4 synthesizer and Dr Rhythm drum machine.
