Chegando à cena no início dos anos 1970, a mistura única de rock progressivo e psicodélico de Hawk foi influenciada por uma profunda reverência por suas raízes africanas, com a narrativa africana tornando seu som único até hoje. Os cinco músicos estudaram música africana ao longo de algumas viagens e em sua fazenda alugada na periferia da cidade. O grupo conseguiu um sucesso ao vivo baseado na música "African day", que depois gravou junto com mais músicas para compor seu primeiro álbum auto-intitulado, que sobreviveu às regras de censura do regime do apartheid.
Depois de lançar seus dois álbuns de estúdio e um álbum ao vivo, "Live & well", em 1974, Hawk praticamente desapareceu. In the short time they were active in the South African music scene, Hawk created a truly South African sound through an inclusive mixture of white and black musicians and a melding of musical traditions that has seldom been recreated.
Arriving on the scene in the early 1970s, Hawk’s unique mixture of progressive, psychedelic rock was informed by a deep reverence for their African roots, with African storytelling made their sound unique even today. In a social milieu that saw many of their contemporaries emulating the music scenes cresting in the USA and UK by tuning in and dropping out, Hawk chose to draw its inspiration from more familiar surrounds – the African bush and the complexity of South African life.
The Johannesburg quintet was formed Dave Ornelias (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Keith Hutchinson (winds, keyboards) and comprised also guitarist mark Khan, bassist Richard Johnson and drummer Braam Malherbe. The five musicians studied African music throughout a few trips and in their rented farm in the outskirts of the city. The group managed quite a live success based on their song "African day", which then it went on to record it along with more songs to make up their first selftitled album, that survived the apartheid Regime's censorship rules.
After releasing their two studio album and a live album, "Live & well", in 1974, Hawk all but disappeared. The band relocated to the UK for the next stage of their career but it never took off in the way they had hoped and the band slowly dissolved, with most members returning to their homes under the African sun.
