HISTÓRIA

Altona foi o novo projeto dos ex-membros fundadores da Thrice Mice, o cantor e saxofonista Karl Heinz Blumenberg e o guitarrista Werner von Gosen. Ao mudar o nome para Altona (uma parte da cidade de Hamburgo), eles queriam expressar seu apego local e, ao mesmo tempo, demonstrar uma mudança em sua direção musical - longe de improvisações meditativas excessivas para um som mais compacto e cativante. Em seu primeiro álbum, "Altona" (1974), essa mudança de direção (por sorte) não ocorreu. Neste primeiro álbum, a banda manteve a sensação de Blodwyn Pig, que dominou as primeiras gravações da Thrice Mice.

Os contatos que a banda fez em seus dias de Thrice Mice ajudaram na organização e eles fizeram shows por toda a Alemanha. Infelizmente, o primeiro álbum não vendeu bem, apesar dos esforços feitos pela grande gravadora RCA Victor. Como conseqüência, a banda mudou drasticamente sua direção musical e produziu um segundo LP, "Chikenfarm", em 1975. Este álbum diferia distintamente do primeiro, que tinha mais tradição na Thrice Mice e seu rock progressivo. "Chikenfarm" flertava com o jazz norte-americano que era muito popular em 1975, mas não tinha a originalidade necessária. Sua tentativa de abordar um novo público falhou, e Altona se dissolveu no final de 1975.

O título mais conhecido do primeiro álbum é provavelmente "Überlandfahrt", que impressiona com o sax de Blumenberg e um solo de guitarra caracterizado pelos efeitos wah wah de von Gosen. Na década de 1970, a música era tocada toda quinta-feira como o toque de identificação do programa de rádio "Hitparade international" pela emissora Hessian.

HISTORY

Altona was the new project of the former Thrice Mice founding members, singer and sax player Karl Heinz Blumenberg and guitarrist Werner von Gosen. By changing the name to Altona (a part of the city of Hamburg) they wanted to express their local attachment and at the same time demonstrate a change in their musical direction - away from excessive meditative improvisations to a more compact and catchy sound. In their first album, "Altona" (1974), this change of direction (luckly) didn't come. On this first album the band retained the feel of Blodwyn Pig who dominated the first Thrice Mice recordings.

The contacts the band had made in their Thrice Mice days helped with the organisation, and they had gigs all over Germany. Unfortunately, the first album didn't sell well in spite of the efforts made by major label RCA Victor. As a consequence, the band changed their musical direction drastically and produced a second LP, "Chikenfarm", in 1975. This album differed distinctly from the first album, which had been more in the tradition of Thrice Mice and their progressive rock. "Chikenfarm" flirted with the American funky wind section jazz rock that was very popular in 1975, but lacked necessary originality. Their attempt to address a new audience failed, and Altona dissolved in the end of 1975.

The best known title of the first album is probably "Überlandfahrt" that impresses with Blumenberg's sax play and a guitar solo characterized by von Gosen's wah wah effects. In the 1970s the song was played every Thursday as the identification jingle of the radio program "Hitparade international" by the Hessian broadcasting station.

Altona's cooperation with singer-songwriter and cabaret artist Hanns Dieter Hüsch was rather untypical and unusual. They accompanied him occasionally at his gigs and helped with several titles of his double album "Nachtvorstellung".

After ending his participation in Altona, Werner von Gosen turned his back on the music business, just like his brother Rainer had done earlier after the end of Thrice Mice. Karl Heinz Blumenberg was later successful with the band Leinemann and, along with Klaus Gerlach, played in the obscure band Dirty Dogs.
