Arabesque é uma jóia única do rock progressivo, proveniente dos cofres perdidos da história da Pensilvânia. Composto por gravações que datam de 1973 a 1979, "Tales of power" é repleto de letras épicas de fantasia e rico em influências de bandas clássicas como Genesis, Yes, Caravan, Camel, National Health, Nektar e Gentle Giant.

A maioria das sete músicas do álbum excede 10 minutos e permite amplo espaço para a banda se aventurar em aventuras musicais prolongadas. A faixa de abertura, "An epic: Krail mountain", é uma delícia sobre espada e feitiçaria, com letras de serpentes e castelos, com vocais melódicos e órgão de tecelagem, sintetizadores e guitarras elétricas. A música instrumental "Cobbler's knob" é uma peça de fusão de jazz, muito semelhante ao que a National Health estava fazendo na época. Apresentando distorções angulares de guitarra, órgão assombrador e percussão maníaca, essa música mostra a verdadeira musicalidade virtuosa da banda. "We (The farmer song)" é uma peça mais vocal, com letras cativantes centradas nos caminhos do fazendeiro comum, e como as pessoas essencialmente forjam seu próprio destino e guiam seus sucessos e fracassos. Os amantes de teclados receberão um chute do longo solo de sintetizador de Budd Kelly nesta música, que também é a vocalista da banda. Outra música instrumental, "The forgotten pond", é a faixa mais curta do álbum, com apenas 5 minutos, mas é uma beleza melódica, com tecelagem de linhas de guitarra e teclado em meio a um cenário atmosférico que lembra o início da Genesis.

As últimas três músicas terminam o álbum de maneira épica. "As the novelty wears..." tem um ritmo estridente e a complexa Yes encontra as linhas de teclado e guitarra da Gentle Giant, com letras que lidam com turbulência e confusão internas. Este é um bom momento para mencionar o trabalho de guitarra acrobática de August Smarra, cujo estilo e tom únicos acrescentam muito a essa e a todas as músicas do álbum, mas ele nunca tenta ofuscar o resto da banda. Seu breve mas saboroso trabalho de liderança adiciona a quantidade certa de vantagem e tensão à música mencionada acima. A banda adota um tom mais sinfônico em "Arcanum of Atlantis", e este apresenta os vocais de Smarra e uma interação rítmica furiosa do baterista Jim Renda, do baixista Tom Ketterer e do percussionista/guitarrista R.J. Ketterer. O épico de encerramento é o episódio de 12 minutos "Except for dreaming", uma peça sinistra com conotações sombrias e muito diferente do resto do álbum. Muito parecido com o início da Genesis ou King Crimson, a banda aqui cria drama e tensão extremos, diminuindo um pouco as coisas e utilizando órgãos assombrosos e guitarras emocionais. Os vocais torturados de Kelly lembram um jovem Greg Lake, e talvez se eles tivessem jogado um pouco de Mellotron nessa música poderia ter sido uma sobra de "In the court of the Crimson King".

Altamente recomendado para todos os progheads que pensavam conhecer todo o catálogo sinfônico de cor.

Arabesque is a unique progressive rock gem came from the lost vaults of history of Pennsylvania. Comprised of recordings dating from 1973 to 1979, "Tales of power" is chock full of epic fantasy lyrics, and rich in the influences of such classic bands as Genesis, Yes, Caravan, Camel, National Health, Nektar and Gentle Giant.

Most of the album's seven tunes exceed 10 minutes, and allow for ample room for the band to venture into extended musical adventures. The opening track, "An epic: Krail mountain", is a delight about sword and sorcery, featuring lyrics of serpents and castles, with melodic vocals and weaving organ, synths, and electric guitars. The instrumental music "Cobbler's knob" is a ripping jazz-fusion piece, very similar to what National Health was doing at the time. Featuring distorted, angular guitar leads, haunting organ, and manic percussion, this tune shows the true virtuoso musicianship within the band. "We (The farmer song)" is a more vocal based piece, with catchy lyrics centering on the ways of the common farmer, and how people essentially forge their own destiny's and guide their successes and failures. Keyboard lovers will get a kick out of the lengthy synth solo from Budd Kelly on this song, who also happens to be the lead singer for the band. Another instrumental music, "The forgotten pond", is the album's shortest track with just 5 minutes, but happens to be a melodic beauty, with weaving guitar and keyboard lines amidst an atmospheric background that recalls early Genesis.

The last three songs end the album in epic fashion. "As the novelty wears..." has a chugging rhythm and the complex Yes meets Gentle Giant keyboard and guitar lines, with lyrics dealing with inner turmoil and confusion. This is a good time to mention the acrobatic guitar work of August Smarra, whose unique style and tone add a lot to this and every song on the album, yet he never tries to overshadow the rest of the band. His brief but tasty lead work adds just the right amount of edge and tension to the aforementioned song. The band goes for a more symphonic tone on "Arcanum of Atlantis", and this one features the vocals of Smarra, and furious rhythmic interplay from drummer Jim Renda, bassist Tom Ketterer, and percussionist/vibe player R.J. Ketterer. The closing epic is the 12-minute "Except for dreaming", an ominous piece with doomy overtones and very unlike the rest of the album. Much like early Genesis or King Crimson, the band here creates extreme drama and tension by slowing things down a bit and utilizing haunting organ and emotional guitar leads. The tortured vocals of Kelly recall a young Greg Lake, and perhaps if they would have thrown a little Mellotron in this song could have been a leftover from "In the court of the Crimson King".

Highly recommended to all progheads who thought they knew the whole symphonic catalogue by heart.
