Wooden Horse (Folk Rock {Australia/UK})

Originalmente formado em Sidney, Austrália, esse quinteto de folk-rock completou sua formação ao se mudar para Londres em 1970, e é mais conhecido por apresentar a vocalista Susan Traynor - mais conhecida como Noosha Fox. A banda lançou dois LPs, que são muito raros  e foram lançados com um número limitado.

HISTÓRIA

Uma das quatro irmãs, a cantora Susan Traynor, foi criada em Sidney, na Austrália, e estudou em um convento, do qual fugiu. Atraída pelas artes cênicas, ela formou um trio com o cantor e guitarrista David Mateer e Malcolm Harrison. Tendo conquistado reputação localmente no cabaré, em 1970 viajaram para o Reino Unido, onde acrescentaram o guitarrista Steve Marwood e o baixista Neil Brockbank para se tornar um quinteto, com sede em Battersea. No verão de 1971, eles assinaram contrato com a York Records, uma nova gravadora liderada pelo editor de música britânico Deke Arlon como uma ramificação da Yorkshire Television.

Eles gravaram seu álbum no Nova Sound Studios em Londres naquele outono, com a produção de Arlon. Foi lançado em março seguinte, levando Rosalind Russel a escrever no Disc & Music Echo: 

"Eu vi Wooden Horse quando eles chegaram da Austrália e foram contratados como uma banda de aquecimento no Paladium... Fico feliz em dizer que eles mudaram além do reconhecimento desde então. Eles vieram com uma carreira de cabaré bem sucedida por trás deles, mas ainda estavam nessa cena quando chegaram aqui. No entanto, este álbum mostra que eles têm mais talento do que inicialmente se supunha, agora que o escopo foi ampliado. Suas harmonias vocais estreitas têm semelhança com Peter, Paul & Mary em alguns lugares, mas eles ainda não têm um acabamento profissional. Isso provavelmente também não é uma coisa ruim. A maioria das faixas é agradavelmente previsível, mas 'Northern beaches' é estranha e, por esse motivo, se destaca para mim".

Composto por folk-rock suave com belas harmonias vocais, o LP foi promovido na imprensa musical, mas nenhum single foi extraído no Reino Unido (embora "Feel" e "Eastbound train" fossem acopladas na Deram, nos EUA), o aiplay foi mínimo e vendeu mal. A banda permaneceu junta para outro álbum, "Wooden Horse II" (lançado em junho de 1973), que era de padrão semelhante e incorporou mais arranjos elétricos, mas depois a banda se separou.

Traynor ficou famosa como cantora da banda pop de sucesso Fox (mudando seu nome para Nossha Fox), enquanto seus colegas de banda buscavam empreendimentos musicais com menos sucesso. Infelizmente, David Mateer mais tarde perdeu a vida em um acidente de moto.

Originally formed in Sydney, Australia, this folk-rock m,quintet completed its formation by moving to London in 1970, and is best known for performing lead singer Susan Traynor - better known as Noosha Fox. The band released two LPs, which are very rare and were released with a limited number.

HISTORY

One of four sisters, singer Susan Traynor was brought up in Sidney, Australia and educated in a convent, from which she ran away. Drawn to the performing arts, she formwd a trio with singer-guitarrist David Mateer and Malcolm Harrison. Having made a reputation locally in cabaret, in 1970 they travelled to the United Kingdom, where they added lead acoustic guitarrist Steve Marwood and bassist Neil Brockbank to become a quintet, based in Battersea. In the summer of 1971 they signed to York Records, a new label headed by Britsh music publisher Deke Arlon as an offshoot of Yorkshire Television.

They recorded their album in London's Nova Sound Studios that autumn, with Arlon producing. It was released the following March, prompting Rosalind Russel to write in Disc & Music Echo:

"I saw Wooden Horse when they first arrived here from Australia and were booked as a warm-up band at the Paladium... I'm glad to say they've changed beyond recognition since then. They came with a successful cabaret carrer behind them, but were still in that scene when they got here. However, this album shows that they have more talent than at first supposed, now that the scope has been widened. Their tight vocal harmonies bear resemblance to Peter, Paul & Mary in places, but they don't have such a professional finish as yet. That's probably not a bad thing, either. Most of the tracks are pleasantly predictable, but 'Northern beaches' is strange and for that reason stands out for me".

Consisting of mellow folk-rock with beautiful vocal harmonies, the LP was promoted in the music press, but no single was extracted in the United Kingdom (though "Feel" and "Eastbound train" were coupled on Deram in the US), aiplay was minimal, and it sold poorly. The band remained together for another album, "Wooden Horse II" (issued in  June 1973), which was of similar standard, and incorporated more electric arrangements, but split thereafter.

Traynor went on to fame as singer with the hit pop band Fox (changing her name to Nossha Fox), while her bandmates pursued musical endeavours with less success. Sadly David Mateer later lost his life in a motorcycle accident.
