HISTÓRIA

Berlin Wilmersdorf, 1971: O baterista Norbert Kagelmann e o guitarrista Michael Fechner estão procurando um baixista para sua banda recém-fundada. Os dois estão cansados ​​do som clássico pomposo de órgão Hammond, popular na época, tocado por muitas bandas. Seu objetivo: o hard rock orientado para o blues. Naquela época eles estavam hospedados no vilarejo de Grunewald (distrito de Berlim), que era um local conhecido por muitos músicos e do divinamente talentoso instrumentista de órgão Burkhard Plenge. Eles costumavam se reunir para tagarelar e tocar, e havia um contínuo ir e vir de membros da Karthago, Twang Gang, Motivation e muitas outras. Até a banda clássica Murphy Blend era uma convidada habitual, já que a sala de ensaios ficava perto.

Quando Murphy Blend se separou devido às diferenças musicais, o baixista Andreas Scholz se interessou pelo novo projeto da banda de Fencher e Kagelmann. Eles se conheceram, experimentaram por algumas horas e a Blackwater Park foi iniciada. A partir de então, a nova banda trabalhou regularmente em suas próprias músicas, a fim de montar um repertório completo o mais rápido possível. E eles conseguiram. O trio da Blackwater Park emocionou o público em clubes de toda a Alemanha e em um show notável no festival de Herzberg em junho de 1971.

Por volta de agosto de 1971, surgiu a oportunidade única de incorporar o vocalista Ritchie Routledge, de Londres, que estava procurando por conexões musicais em Berlim. A Blackwater Park se aposentou para trabalhar em seu repertório e desenvolveu muitas novas músicas com Routledge. Como resultado, o serviço de imprensa da JOWI conseguiu atrair para Berlim um olheiro de talentos da gravadora BASF. Foi preciso apenas uma visita na sala de ensaios e um concerto e o acordo foi feito. Em dezembro de 1971, o álbum "Dirt box" foi gravado no estúdio Windrose em Hamburgo. Infelizmente, o orçamento foi limitado para apenas quatro dias no estúdio e, apesar de serem apoiados por Burkhard Plenge no teclado, eles não foram capazes de realizar todas as idéias. Isso deixou Ritchie Routledge tão frustrado que desapareceu logo depois, indo para Londres e nunca mais tendo voltado. Um pouco mais tarde, Norbert Kagelmann também perdeu a fé no desenvolvimento da banda e se livrou dela.

Michael Fechner e Andreas Scholz não precisaram esperar muito para substituí-lo em Berlim. Mais uma vez os contatos em Grunewald, do músico Burkhard Plenge, ajudaram muito. Do legado da Murphy Blend, Wolfgag Rumler (guitarra, voz) e Achim Schmidt (bateria, voz) foram escolhidos. Seu novo vocalista era Felix Vietor, até então desconhecido na cena, mas muito convincente. Tudo aconteceu tão rapidamente que a BASF mandou imediatamente imprimir os cartões de autógrafos da Blackwater Park com a nova formação.

Apesar dos shows de clubes bem-sucedidos em toda a Alemanha e um show durante um grande festival de rock alemão no Waldbühne, Berlin, a BASF não conseguiu decidir aumentar o investimento no grupo para aumentar as vendas de discos. Portanto, Andreas Scholz deixou a Blackwater Park em 1973, logo após um show em Bremerhaven, vendendo todo o seu equipamento para a banda inglesa que se seguiu. Logo depois, a banda se separou completamente.

Michael Fechner tocou aqui e ali até sua morte prematura no outono de 2001. Achim Schmidt e Felix Vietor ainda tocam em vários grupos até hoje. Wolfgang Rumler abordou os aspectos técnicos e, até hoje, cuida do tom certo durante os eventos.

rock band formed in Berlin in the early 70's.

Its only album has become, over the years, a

sought-after collector's item. The group came to

prominence after Opeth named their fifth album

in honor of the band. Now let's read a little of its

story, told by Andreas Sholz in August 2015,

found in the booklet of the reissue in 

CD by Long Hair label.

HISTORY

Berlin Wilmersdorf, eartly 1971. Drummer Norbert Kagelmann and guitarrist Michael Fechner are looking for a bass player for their newly founded band. The two are sick of the Hammond organ based pompous classical sound popular at that time, played by so many bands. Their goal: blues-oriented hard rock. At the time, they were staying in the village of Grunewald (district of Berlin), which was a place known to many musicians and the divinely talented organ player Burkhard Plenge. They used to meet for gabbing and jamming, and there was a continual coming and going of members of Karthago, Twang Gang, Motivation and many others. Even the classical band Murphy Blend was a habitual guest, since their rehearsal room was nearby.

When Murphy Blend split up due the  musical differences, their bassist Andreas Scholz got interested in Fencher's and Kagelmann's new band project. They met, experimented for a few hours, and Blackwater Park was started. From then on the new band worked on own songs regularly, in order to mount a complete repertoire as soon as possible. And they did it. The Blackwater Park trio thrilled the audience in club all over Germany and at a remarkable gig at the Herzberg festival in June 1971.

Around August 1971 the unique opportunity arose to incorporate London based vocalist Ritchie Routledge, who was looking for musical connections in Berlin, into the formation. Blackwater Park retired to work over their entired repertoire and developed many new songs with Routledge. As a result, JOWI press service managed to entice a talent scout of the BASF label to Berlin. It only took a visit in the rehearsal room and a concert and the deal was done. In December 1971 the album "Dirt box" was recorded in the Windrose studio in Hamburg. Unfortunately the budget was limited to just four days in the studio, and in spite of being supported by Burkhard Plenge on the keyboard they weren't able to realise all ideas. This left Ritchie Routledge so frustrated that he dissapeared right after to London and never turned again. A little later Norbert Kagelmann also lost faith in the further development of the band and bailed out.

Michael Fechner and Andreas Scholz didn't have to seach long for replacemenet in Berlin. Once again, the contacts in Grunewald, by the musician Burkhard Plenge, helped a lot. From the Murphy Blend legacy Wolfgag Rumler (guitar, vocals) and Achim Schmidt (drums, vocals) were taken so. Their new vocalist was Felix Vietor, up to that time rather unknown in the scene, but very convincing. It all happened so quickly that BASF had the Blackwater Park autograph cards printed with the new line-up right away.

In spite of successful club concerts all over Germany and a gig during a large German rock festival in the Waldbühne Berlin, BASF could not make up their mind to increase their investment in  the group to boost record sales. Therefore Andreas Scholz left Blackwater Park in 1973, right after a gig in Bremerhaven, selling his entire equipment to the English band that followed. Shortly after, the  band split up completely.

Michael Fechner played here and there until his early death in autumn 2001. Achim Schmidt and Felix Vietor still play in various groups till today. Wolfgang Rumler went into the technical aspects and to this date takes care of the right tone during events.
