The Trip (Progressive Rock {Itália/UK})

The Trip é uma banda de rock progressivo britânica-italiana formada início dos anos 70. Embora sua carreira tenha sido menos bem sucedida do que as de outras bandas italianas como PFM ou Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, ela foi muito popular por alguns anos e foi muito apreciada pelos críticos, principalmente por causa de seu talentoso líder e tecladista Joe Vescovi, que é frequentemente referido como "a versão italiana de Keith Emerson". A banda também ganhou destaque por ter apresentado o guitarrista britânico Ritchie Blackmore antes de ele se juntar à Deep Purple.

HISTÓRIA
ANOS 60

O núcleo da banda foi estabelecido em Londres em 1966, durante a estadia do cantor Riki Maiocchi. Maiocchi, depois de deixar I Camaleonti para seguir carreira solo, procurava músicos para formar um núcleo de apoio com maior propensão ao rock psicodélico. Graças ao baterista Ian Broad (que já estava em Milão quando fazia parte da The Bigs), o guitarrista Ritchie Blackmore (ex-integrante de outras bandas britânicas), o baixista Arvid "Wegg" Andersen e um segundo guitarrista, chamado Billy Gray (que tocou com Eric Clapton e havia tocado com a banda escosesa The Anteeeks {veja-os aqui}), chegaram. Em outubro, o cantor e os músicos aparecem nos palcos italianos sob as iniciais Maiocchi & The Trip. Mas em dezembro Blackmore retorna à Inglaterra para se juntar à Deep Purple, e a banda se separa.

Após um breve interlúdio com Luciano Gandolfi na guitarra, em 1967, o tecladista de Savona, Joe Vescovi, juntou-se ao trio e, em junho de 1967, o baterista de Turim Pino Sinnone (lançado pela Teste Dure e The Rogers), que substituiu Broad removido da equipe devido a questões disciplinares. Em meio à era psicodélica o quarteto mantém o nome de The Trip, com claras alusões à experiência lisérgica. Com quatro membros na formação, liderados por Vescovi, a banda propõe uma mistura de beat, rock e blues com veias sinfônicas, que os críticos batizam como "música impressionista" e que tem alguma semelhança com o som da Vanilla Fudge. Graças a uma audição realizada no Piper Club, em Roma, a banda é notada pelo produtor Alberigo Crocetta, que coloca o quarteto sob contrato para a RCA, fazendo sua própria faixa também incluída na compilação "Piper 2000".

ANOS 70

Em maio de 1970, a banda publica o primeiro álbum, "The Trip", às vezes indicado com o título de "música impressionista" (expressão que aparece na contracapa). O disco retorna a mistura musical original da banda, com a adição das atmosferas psicodélicas rituais da época (também presente na capa, multi-colorida, idealizada pelo estúdio gráfico Up & Down) e os efeitos sonoros. No mesmo ano, o quarteto aparece como protagonista do filme surreal "Terzo canale: Avventura a Montecarlo" (dirigido por Giulio Paradisi), junto com New Trolls, Mal e outros artistas, que também documentam sua participação no Festival Pop di Caracalla.

No ano seguinte, em setembro, é gravado o segundo álbum, "Caronte", de certa forma pioneiro, com todos os elementos que constituirão o som progressivo da banda: passagens longas e articuladas, mudanças de ritmo, citações literárias, arranjos barrocos com influências sinfônicas. Os teclados de Vescovi se tornam o instrumento predominante na maioria das músicas, principalmente nas duas peças que dão nome ao disco, mesmo que estejam bem presentes frases de guitarra no estilo Hendrix. O álbum é muito bem produzido, é embalado com uma bela capa dobrada e é considerado uma pedra angular do rock progressivo italiano.

Em 1971, a banda está presente no Festival di Musica d'Avanguardia e di Nuove Tendenze de Viareggio (uma comuna italiana da região da Toscana) e, no ano seguinte, continua uma atividade ao vivo ainda mais intensa, participando com grande sucesso nas reuniões mais importantes, incluindo Davoli Pop, Controcanzonissima da Ciao 2001 e o Festival Pop di Villa Pamphili.

Em maio de 1972, Gray e Sinnone deixam a banda. O baterista é substituído por Furio Chirico (também de Turim), um dos principais expoentes do "disparismo" rítmico, que, apesar de muito jovem, já tem vários anos de experiência, tendo tocado com I Ragazzi del Sole e Martò & I Judas. A habilidade técnica de Vescovi torna supérflua a entrada de um novo guitarrista, e o ex-quarteto se apresenta definitivamente como um trio com teclado, baixo e bateria, seguindo o exemplo de Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Em maio de 1972, com a criação de "Atlantide", o som da banda é sintonizado cada vez mais claramente com as frequências das bandas progressivas anglo-saxônicas. O disco é um álbum conceitual que segue o mito do continente desaparecido, para simbolizar a gênese e a queda da sociedade totalitária. As letras são em inglês, enquanto a capa do álbum, criada pelo habitual estúdio Up & Down, é muito bem conservada, com dois extremos de pôster que podem ser abertos, representando um mapa imaginário da ilha. Os teclados de Vescovi são ainda mais enfatizados, com frequentes espaços para solos e, também, com o virtuosismo de Chirico. O disco é tecnicamente excepcional e, para alguns, representa o vértice tocado pela banda, embora pareça menos fresco e inovador do que os anteriores.

A mesma formação, transferida da RCA para a Trident Records, publicou "Time of change" em 1973, o último álbum da discografia. Este também é um álbum conceitual com um tema mitológico, que comparado a trabalhos anteriores tem uma contaminação ainda mais evidente da música clássica e influências do jazz. O trabalho, sempre bem tocado, representa o crepúsculo criativo da banda.

Depois de "Time of change", Chirico abandona The Trip para formar sua própria fusão orgânica, a Arti e Mestieri. Vescovi e Andersen contratam Nunzio "Cucciolo" Favia da Osage Tribe, mas o trio acaba se dissolvendo. Após a separação, Vescovi entra primeiro em Acqua Fragile e depois, junto com Favia, na I Dik Dik, com quem já colabora há algum tempo, trazendo também seu talento compositivo (suas músicas "Io, te, l'infinito" com o texto de Giancarlo Sbriziolo e "Walking in the sunshine" de 1977, bem como todas as músicas do álbum "Amico" de 1978). Nos anos 80, Vescovi se junta à banda de Umberto Tozzi.

O RETORNO

Nos anos 2000, Vescovi gravou dois álbuns em CD com uma banda de tributo à The Beatles, Shout!, na qual Franz Dondi (da Acqua Fragile) também colaborou.

Em 2010, a banda foi reconstituída por Wegg Andersen, Joe Vescovi e Furio Chirico, com a colaboração de Fabrizio Chiarelli (guitarras e vocais) e Angelo Perini (baixo), para participar da Exposição Prog realizada no Teatro Tendastrisce em Roma nos dias 5 e 6 de novembro. Em 2011, o grupo participou do Italian Progressive Rock Festival em Tóquio, gravando nessa ocasião o álbum "Live in Tokyo 2011", lançado em 2013 com a reedição do histórico álbum "Atlantide" em CD duplo.

Wegg Andersen faleceu em 31 de março de 2012, enquanto Joe Vescovi morreu em San Benedetto del Tronto em 29 de novembro de 2014. Pino "Caronte" Sinnone relatou que alguns dias antes de morrer, Joe Vescovi expressou seu desejo de que a música da The Trip nunca fosse esquecida. Por esse motivo, Pino Sinnone formou uma banda, em maio de 2015, com o nome The New Trip, imediatamente alterado para The Trip, junto com Paolo "Paul Silver" Silvestri nos teclados (substituído por Filippo Delmastro), Andrea Ranfa Ranfagni na voz, Tony "il Peocio" Scantamburlo na guitarra e Fabio Gremo no baixo (substituído por Giuseppe Terribile), para uma dúzia de shows, onde as faixas dos primeiros álbuns são reproduzidas, e com o projeto de um novo álbum de estúdio.

Em janeiro de 2016, um álbum ao vivo de um concerto gravado no Piper Club de Roma, em 28 de janeiro de 1972, foi publicado durante o evento Controcanzonissima. É uma espécie de bootleg oficial, dedicado à memória de Joe Vescovi, que imortaliza uma performance histórica do grupo: a última com Pino Sinnone.

Em janeiro de 2017, Pino Sinnone reforma a banda The Trip com o multi-instrumentista Andreas Polito no baixo, Davide Ciardo na guitarra, Paolo Cercato nos teclados e Andrea Ranfagni nos vocais, convidando a violinista Elisabetta Bosio para embelezar os arranjos e recomeçar as atividades da banda em 29 de abril no Il Giardino em Lugagnano, um pequeno templo de prog, substituindo Paolo Cercato por Filippo Delmastro nos teclados. A esta data é adicionada a de 12 de maio de 2017 no palco do Sporting Dora de Turim e, à formação acima mencionada, é adicionado Stefano Genti aos teclados (da New Trolls), como convidado.

Durante o final do verão de 2017, Pino Sinnone novamente procura novos elementos para completar o núcleo central oficialmente composto por ele e por Andrea Ranfa Ranfagni. Graças ao interesse deste último, o repertório é submetido ao estudo do baixista e cantor Giuseppe Gius Lanari, que se reúne em Turim, em novembro, com Pino e alguns membros anteriores. Confirmado o baixista e reconfirmado Filippo Delmastro, a formação faz uma data zero no Spazio 211 de Turim, em 8 de dezembro de 2017, e com a colaboração de três guitarristas convidados, a fim de cobrir as partes da saída (infelizmente no último momento) Davide Ciardo. Após a apresentação, que atende aos favores do público, o guitarrista e cantor Ruggero Clemente é confirmado como guitarrista oficial da The Trip.

Em 2017, uma nova edição do álbum "Time of change" é lançada.

No final de março de 2018, Marco Rostagno substitui Ruggero Clemente na guitarra e se apresentou com o grupo, em 20 de abril, na Stazione Birra de Roma. No dia 1º de junho, a banda consolidou sua formação atual com um concerto no auditório da FIM, em Milão.

O ano de 2019 apresenta uma importante mudança de formação, confirmando Andrea Ranfa Ranfagni como vocalista, o guitarrista e multi-instrumentista Caserta Carmine Capasso (compositor e session man), Tony Alemanno no baixo e vocal e Andrea "Dave" D'Avino no órgão Hammond e teclados. A banda está atualmente ocupada trabalhando no novo álbum e em novos shows ao vivo.

The Trip is a British-Italian progressive rock band formed in the early 70's. Although his career was less successful than other Italian bands such as PFM or Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, it was very popular for a few years and was much appreciated by critics, mainly because of its talented leader and keyboardist Joe Vescovi, which is often referred to as "the Italian version of Keith Emerson". The band also gained prominence for featuring British guitarist Ritchie Blackmore before he joined Deep Purple.

HISTORY
DECADE OF 60

The band's core was established in London in 1966 during the stay of singer Riki Maiocchi. Maiocchi, after leaving I Camaleonti to pursue a solo career, sought out musicians to form a supportive core with a greater propensity for psychedelic rock. Thanks to drummer Ian Broad (who was already in Milan when he was part of The Bigs), guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (former member of other British bands), bassist Arvid "Wegg" Andersen and a second guitarist named Billy Gray (who played with Eric Clapton and had played with the Scottish band The Anteeeks {see them here}), they arrived. In October, the singer and musicians appear on the Italian stage under the initials Maiocchi & The Trip. But in December Blackmore returns to England to join Deep Purple, and the band breaks up.

Following a brief interlude with Luciano Gandolfi on guitar in 1967, Savona keyboardist Joe Vescovi joined the trio and, in June 1967, Turin drummer Pino Sinnone (released by Teste Dure and The Rogers), who replaced Broad removed from staff due to disciplinary issues. Amid the psychedelic era the quartet retains the name of The Trip, with clear allusions to the lysergic experience. With four members in the lineup, led by Vescovi, the band proposes a mix of beat, rock and blues with symphonic veins, which critics call "impressionist music" and bears some resemblance to the sound of Vanilla Fudge. Thanks to an audition held at the Piper Club in Rome, the band is noted by producer Alberigo Crocetta, who puts the quartet under contract to RCA, making his own track also included in the compilation "Piper 2000".

DECADE OF 70

In May 1970, the band published their debut album, "The Trip" sometimes referred to as "impressionist music" (an expression that appears on the back cover). The album returns to the band's original musical mix, with the addition of the ritual psychedelic atmospheres of the time (also featured on the multi-colored cover, designed by graphic studio Up & Down) and the sound effects. In the same year, the quartet appears as the protagonist of the surreal film "Terzo canale: Avventura a Montecarlo" (directed by Giulio Paradisi), along with New Trolls, Mal and other artists, who also document their participation in the Pop di Caracalla Festival.

The following year, in September, is recorded the second album, "Caronte", somewhat pioneering, with all the elements that will constitute the progressive sound of the band: long and articulate passages, rhythm changes, literary quotations, baroque arrangements with symphonic influences. Vescovi's keyboards become the predominant instrument in most songs, especially in the two pieces that name the album, even though Hendrix-style guitar phrases are well present. The album is very well produced, is packed with a beautiful folded cover and is considered a cornerstone of Italian progressive rock.

In 1971, the band was present at the Festival di Musica d'Avanguardia and di Nuove Tendenze in Viareggio (a commune in the Tuscan region) and the following year, it continues an even more intense live activity, participating with great success in the most important meetings, including Davoli Pop, Ciao 2001's Controcanzonissima and the Festival Pop di Villa Pamphili.

In May 1972, Gray and Sinnone leave the band. The drummer is replaced by Furio Chirico (also from Turin), one of the main exponents of rhythmic "disparism", who, although very young, already has several years of experience, having played with I Ragazzi del Sole and Martò & I Judas. Vescovi's technical ability makes a new guitar player superfluous, and the former quartet definitely presents himself as a keyboard, bass and drums trio, following the example of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. In May 1972, with the creation of "Atlantide", the band's sound is increasingly tuned to the frequencies of the Anglo-Saxon progressive bands. The album is a concept album that follows the myth of the missing continent to symbolize the genesis and fall of totalitarian society. The lyrics are in English, while the album cover, created by the usual Up & Down studio, is very well kept, with two openable poster ends representing an imaginary map of the island. Vescovi's keyboards are even more emphasized, with frequent spaces for solos and also with Chirico's virtuosity. The album is technically exceptional and, for some, represents the band's vertex, though it seems less fresh and innovative than the previous ones.

The same lineup, transferred from RCA to Trident Records, published "Time of change" in 1973, the last album of discography. This is also a concept album with a mythological theme, which compared to previous works has an even more evident contamination of classical music and jazz influences. The work, always well played, represents the creative twilight of the band.

After "Time of change", Chirico leaves The Trip to form his own organic fusion, Arti and Mestieri. Vescovi and Andersen hire Nunzio "Cucciolo" Favia from Osage Tribe, but the trio eventually dissolves. After the split, Vescovi first goes to Acqua Fragile and then, along with Favia, to I Dik Dik, with whom he has collaborated for some time, also bringing his compositional talent (his songs "Io, te, l'infinito" with text by Giancarlo Sbriziolo and 1977's "Walking in the sunshine" as well as all the songs on the 1978 album "Amico"). In the 80s, Vescovi joins the band of Umberto Tozzi.

THE RETURN

In the 2000s, Vescovi recorded two albums on CD with a The Beatles tribute band, Shout!, In which Franz Dondi (from Acqua Fragile) also collaborated.

In 2010, the band was reconstituted by Wegg Andersen, Joe Vescovi and Furio Chirico, with the collaboration of Fabrizio Chiarelli (guitars and vocals) and Angelo Perini (bass), to attend the Prog Exhibition held at the Tendastrisce Theater in Rome on the 5th and November 6th. In 2011, the group participated in the Italian Progressive Rock Festival in Tokyo, recording on this occasion the album "Live in Tokyo 2011", released in 2013 with the reissue of the historic album "Atlantide" on double CD.

Wegg Andersen passed away on March 31, 2012, while Joe Vescovi died in San Benedetto del Tronto on November 29, 2014. Pin "Caronte" Sinnone reported that a few days before his death, Joe Vescovi expressed his wish that The Music Trip was never forgotten. For this reason, Pino Sinnone formed a band in May 2015 under the name The New Trip, immediately changed to The Trip, along with Paolo "Paul Silver" Silvestri on the keyboards (replaced by Filippo Delmastro), Andrea Ranfa Ranfagni in voice. Tony "il Peocio" Scantamburlo on guitar and Fabio Gremo on bass (replaced by Giuseppe Terribile) for a dozen shows where tracks from early albums are played, and with the design of a new studio album.

In January 2016, a live album of a concert recorded at the Piper Club of Rome on January 28, 1972, was published during the Controcanzonissima event. It's a kind of official bootleg, dedicated to the memory of Joe Vescovi, that immortalizes a historical performance of the group: the last with Pino Sinnone.

In January 2017, Pino Sinnone reformed The Trip with multi-instrumentalist Andreas Polito on bass, Davide Ciardo on guitar, Paolo Cercato on keyboards and Andrea Ranfagni on vocals, inviting violinist Elisabetta Bosio to beautify arrangements and resume activities. April 29th at Il Giardino in Lugagnano, a small prog temple, replacing Paolo Cercato with Filippo Delmastro on keyboards. To this date is added the 12th of May 2017 on the stage of Turin's Sporting Dora and to the aforementioned lineup Stefano Genti (New Trolls) is added to the keyboards as a guest.

During late summer 2017, Pino Sinnone again looks for new elements to complete the central core officially composed of him and Andrea Ranfa Ranfagni. Thanks to the latter's interest, the repertoire is submitted to the study of bassist and singer Giuseppe Gius Lanari, who meets in Turin in November with Pino and some previous members. Confirmed bassist and reconfirmed Filippo Delmastro, the lineup makes a zero date at Turin's Spazio 211 on December 8, 2017, and with the collaboration of three guest guitarists to cover the parts of the output (unfortunately at the last moment) Davide Ciardo. After the performance, which caters to the public's favors, guitarist and singer Ruggero Clemente is confirmed as the official guitarist of The Trip.

In 2017, a new edition of the album "Time of change" is released.

In late March 2018 Marco Rostagno replaces Ruggero Clemente on guitar and performed with the group on April 20 at Stazione Birra in Rome. On June 1st, the band consolidated their current lineup with a concert at the FIM auditorium in Milan.

The year 2019 presents a major lineup change, confirming Andrea Ranfa Ranfagni as lead singer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Caserta Carmine Capasso (composer and session man), Tony Alemanno on bass and vocal and Andrea "Dave" D'Avino on organ Hammond and keyboards. The band is currently busy working on the new album and new live shows.
