HISTÓRIA

Fundada em 1968, a banda contou com a presença de Larry Hoppen que, na época deixou a Ithaca College como um aluno e se juntou à banda. Em pouco tempo, a banda gravou 2 álbuns na cidade de Nova York (lançados em 1969 e 1970).

O primeiro LP é a banda original: Keith Ginsberg na guitarra e nos vocais, Basil Matychuk nos teclados e nos vocais, o falecido Ritchie Vitagliano na bateria e Larry Hoppen no baixo. Gravado em um estúdio de 4 faixas "de última geração" na 54th Street, o álbum exemplifica a pura energia e exploração da juventude: um primeiro esforço de um grupo de crianças com uma idéia eclética, intelectual e às vezes etérea de música pop.

A line-up da Boffalongo mudou antes de a banda gravar o 2º LP, "Beyond your head", no mesmo estúdio - agora atualizado para 8 faixas. Keith saiu, Basil ficou, Larry Hoppen mudou-se para guitarra, David "Doc" Robinson juntou-se ao baixo e Ritchie ainda continuou tocando bateria. No entanto, a banda ao vivo mudou radicalmente, logo após o lançamento do LP. Sherman Kelly substituiu Basil nos teclados/vocais e o ex-colega de faculdade de Larry Hoppen, Peter Giansante, começou a tocar bateria - apenas o tempo suficiente para gravar uma nova música chamada "Dancin' in the moonlight", escrita por Sherman em 1969.

"Beyond your head" mostra o crescimento da banda desde o primeiro LP, com uma prévia do que virá através de uma primeira gravação do que se tornaria uma música icônica global, além de músicas de Doc e Larry Hoppen, incluindo uma suíte de três músicas na CS&N.

Alguns anos depois, Doc seria o vocalista da versão de sucesso de "Dancin' in the moonlight" da King Harvest (1973), uma banda que incluía Sherman e Wells Kelly (o falecido) - irmão mais novo de Sherman - e ambos se tornaram bateristas da Boffalongo até que a banda se separou no final de 1971 e depois se uniram a John Hall para fundar Orleans em Woodstock, NY, levando Larry Hoppen ao trio inicial em fevereiro de 1972.

STORY

Founded in 1968, the band was attended by Larry Hoppen, who at the time left Ithaca College as a student and joined the band. In a short time, the band recorded 2 albums in New York City (released in 1969 and 1970).

The first LP is the original band: Keith Ginsberg on guitar and vocals, Basil Matychuk on keyboards and vocals, the late Ritchie Vitagliano on drums and Larry Hoppen on bass. Recorded in a "state of the art" 4-track studio on 54th Street, it exemplifies the sheer energy/exploration of youth: a first effort from a group of kids with an eclectic, intellectual and sometimes ethereal idea of pop music.

Boffalongo's personnel changed before record the 2nd LP, "Beyond your head", in the same studio - now upgraded to 8-track. Keith left, Basil stayed, Larry Hoppen moved to guitar, David "Doc" Robinson joined on bass and Ritchie still drummed on the record. However, the live band changed radically, right after the LP was released. Sherman Kelly replaced Basil on keyboards/vocals and the former college roommate of Larry Hoppen, Peter Giansante, entered on drums - just long enough to record a new song named "Dancin’ in the moonlight", written by Sherman in 1969.

"Beyond your head" shows the band’s growth from the firstLP, with a preview of things to come through a first recording of what would become a global, iconic song, plus tunes by Doc and Larry Hoppen including a 3-song suite a la CS&N.

A few years later, Doc would be the lead singer on the huge hit rendition of "Dancin’ in the moonlight" by King Harvest (1973), a band which included Sherman as well as (the late) Wells Kelly – Sherman’s younger brother - and both became Boffalongo’s drummer until the band disbanded in late 1971 and then joined up with John Hall to start Orleans in Woodstock, NY, bringing Larry Hoppen into the initial trio in Feb. of 1972.
