No início dos anos 70, havia muitas bandas alemãs tocando uma emocionante mistura de rock psicodélico, cosmic e free-jazz. Houve também outro movimento de música que mais tarde seria conhecido como Industrial, com seus ritmos metronômicos e rígidos e instrumentos de som difusos. Todos os itens acima são geralmente marcados com a tag krautrock. No entanto, havia um grupo muito menor de bandas na Alemanha que adotou o som de Canterbury, uma abordagem complexa, altamente melódica e jazzística da música que era, na época, popular na Inglaterra. Brainstorm, Tomorrow's Gift e, em menor grau, Missus Beastly são exemplos desse estilo.
A Tortilla Flat se enquadra nesse último grupo. Mas, embora muitos mencionem Supersister, Kraan ou as bandas anteriormente citadas como comparação, isso não é verdade. De fato, a música é única, não típica de krautrock, mas psicodélica, complexa, muito afinada, com leves influências do jazz e um pouco de Canterbury.
A banda foi fundada, em 1972, em Geilenkirchen, uma pequena cidade situada a cerca de 25 km a nordeste de Aachen por ex-membros da banda estudantil Nichts, o flautista e guitarrista Hermann Josef Basten e o baterista Hans Friedrich Basten. Logo, o guitarrista Manfred Herten e o baixista Heribert Schippers se juntaram à banda. Os jovens músicos batizaram a banda em homenagem a um romance de John Steinbeck ("The grapes of wrath", "East of Eden", um dos escritores mais bem-sucedidos e populares nos EUA).
A banda tocou em todos os tipos de palcos da região: em escolas, paróquias, clubes de jovens e clubes de música. O primeiro álbum foi gravado no estúdio Werkstatt em Wedesbüttel (perto de Hannover) entre 20 e 22 de dezembro. O álbum foi gravado e mixado em apenas três dias. Infelizmente, os shows e as vendas de discos foram insuficientes para garantir uma sobrevivência financeira e econômica para a banda, e os caras decidiram terminar em 1975.
O único álbum da Tortilla Flat é um exercício instrumental na excelente combinação de jazz com ritmos fortes e guitarra rock. Tortilla Flat era formada por seis membros que utilizavam a flauta, guitarra, violão, baixo, bateria, percussão e piano elétrico para expor suas idéias. O principal instrumento aqui é a flauta, com bastante espaço para o piano Rhodes e a guitarra cortante, enquanto as melodias são animadas e lúdicas. As sete faixas em exibição oferecem muito espaço para improvisações em ritmos complexos, enquanto as composições são memoráveis e, às vezes, bonitas.
O selo Long Hair, decidiu reeditar o álbum este ano, 2019, nos formatos CD e vinil. O CD inclui um livreto de 16 páginas com fotos, história da banda (em alemão e inglês) e duas faixas bônus (ao vivo em Hückelhoven, 1974).

HISTORY
In the early 1970s, there were many German bands playing an exciting mix of psychedelic, cosmic and free-jazz rock. There was also another music movement that would later be known as Industrial, with its metronomic and rigid rhythms and fuzzy sound instruments. All of the above are usually tagged with krautrock. However, there was a much smaller group of bands in Germany that adopted the Canterbury sound, a complex, highly melodic and jazzy approach to music that was then popular in England. Brainstorm, Tomorrow's Gift and, to a lesser extent, Missus Beastly are examples of this style.
Tortilla Flat falls into this latter group. But while many mention Supersister, Kraan or the previously mentioned bands as a comparison, this is not true. In fact, the music is unique, not typical of krautrock, but psychedelic, complex, very in tune, with slight jazz influences and a bit of Canterbury.
The band was founded, in 1972, in Geilenkirchen, a small town situated roughly 25 km north east of Aachen by former members of the student band Nichts, the flutist and guitarrist Hermann Josef Basten and the drummer Hans Friedrich Basten. Soon, the guitarrist Manfred Herten and bassist Heribert Schippers joined the band. The young musicians named their band after a novel by John Steinbeck ("The grapes of wrath", "East of Eden", one of the most successful and most popular writers in the US).
The band played on all sorts of stages in the region: on schools, parish halls, youth and music clubs. The first album was recorded at the Werkstatt studio in Wedesbüttel (near Hannover) between December 20 and 22. The album was recorded and mixed in just three days. Unfortunately, the shows and record sales were insufficient to guarantee a financial and economic survival for the band, and the guys decided to break up in 1975.
Tortilla Flat's only album is an instrumental exercise in the excellent combination of jazz with strong rhythms and rock guitar. Tortilla Flat consisted of six members who used the flute, guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, percussion and electric piano to expose its ideas. The main instrument here is the flute, with plenty of room for the Rhodes piano and the cutting guitar, while the melodies are lively and playful. The seven tracks on display offer plenty of room for improvisation at complex rhythms, while the compositions are memorable and sometimes beautiful.
The label Long Hair, decided to reissue the album this year, 2019, in CD and vinyl formats. The CD includes a 16-page photo booklet, band history (in German and English) and two bonus tracks (live in Hückelhoven, 1974).
