Em janeiro de 1969, Dion Grody e seu grupo se juntaram a Trevor Koehler no sax barítono para gravar seu álbum de estréia. "Algumas semanas atrás, encontrei um baterista com quem eu não falava há um bom tempo. Ele me perguntou o que eu estava fazendo no momento. Respondi que estava trabalhando no relançamento do catálogo ESP. É um trabalho excelente, mas demorado, embora às vezes faça você se sentir como um arqueólogo ou um detetive - você tem que juntar peças de vários quebra-cabeças simultaneamente. Para minha surpresa, ele disse que tinha alguns discos ESP em sua própria coleção. Seis dias depois ele apareceu em meu escritório e me mostrou dois deles: Local Color do Quinteto Peter Lemer e Octopus - com uma capa colorida! A última cópia que eu tinha visto tinha sido em Londres, na casa de um verdadeiro 'louco por ESP', onde eu estava fazendo algumas pesquisas. Porém a capa do Octopus que vi era preta e branca! Obviamente, existem diferentes versões. 'A ESP deve ter ficado sem dinheiro novamente na hora dessa repressão', disse o engenheiro Onno Scholtze, rindo, quando o confrontei com esse fato.

O mais estranho dessa história, entretanto, é que eu encontrei alguém por acaso que por acaso tinha um álbum do Octopus! Estranho, e ainda mais estranho: ele disse que gostou muito do álbum. E obrigada pela capa, Jan!

E então, alguns dias depois: navegando na internet, procurando por Octopus, encontrei alguém que queria mais informações sobre uma certa banda chamada Octopus. Ele comprou o álbum deles em segunda mão e queria saber mais sobre essa estranha 'mistura de jazz com som de bêbado e rock de garagem, hardiy fusion, apenas: música muito complicada.

Mais Informações? Bem, não há realmente muito a dizer - exceto que este é um álbum típico dos anos 60, acid-blues, jazz e / ou rock stoned-out trippy, interpretado por Dion Grody (guitarras, teclados), Lanny Brooks (baixo), Craig Justin (bateria, percussão) e Tom Miller (sax tenor), acompanhado em duas faixas por Trevor Koehler no sax barítono.

Nem é preciso dizer que a letra da música cobre guerra, armas, os Kennedys e Martin Luther King (cuidado com o "bang, bang" em "U.S. blues"!!). Como eu disse: muito um álbum dos anos 60 - mas, e isso é incomum: ainda é muito audível. Oh sim, há um pouco de informação extra: você também pode ouvir Brooks, Grody, Justin e Koehler no álbum "You used to think" de Erica Pomerance (ESP CD 1099) - em breve será relançado!"

In January 1969, Dion Grody and her group joined Trevor Koehler on baritone sax to record their debut album. Melodic rock, organ blues, sax, fuzz, counterculture lyrics, basement vocals and avant-garde sax noise. Below is the text found in the album booklet. Enjoy!

"A few weeks ago I bumped into a drummer who I hadn't spoken to in quite a while. He asked me what I was doing at the moment. I replied that I was working on the re-release of the ESP catalogue. It's a great but time-consuming job, although sometimes it makes you feel like an archeologist or a detective - you have to simultaneously put pieces of several puzzles together. To my surprise he said that he had a few ESP Disks in his own collection. Six days later he appeared at my office and showed me two of these: Local Colour by the Peter Lemer Quintet and Octopus - with a full colour cover! The last copy I'd seen had been in London, at the house of a real 'ESP freak”, where I was doing some research. However the Octopus cover I saw there was black & white! Clearly there are different versions around. 'ESP must have run out of money again at the time of this re-pressing', said engineer Onno Scholtze, laughing, when I confronted him with this fact.

The strangest thing about this story is, however, that I should meet someone by chance who happened to have an Octopus album! Weird, and even weirder: he said he liked the album very much. And thank you for the cover, Jan!

And then, a few days later: surfing the net, searching for Octopus, I came across someone who wanted more information about a certain band called Octopus. He had bought their album in a secondhand.stofe and he wanted to know more about this odd' mixture of drunken sounding jazz & garage rock, hardiy fusion, just: very screwed up music.

More information? Well, there's really not much to tell - except that this is a typical sixties album, stoned-out trippy acid-blues, jazz and / or rock as performed by Dion Grody (guitars, keyboards), Lanny Brooks (bass guitar), Craig Justin (drums, percussion) and Tom Miller (tenor sax), joined on two tracks by Trevor Koehler on baritone sax.

lt goes without saying that the lyrics cover war, guns, the Kennedys and Martin Luther King (watch out for the "bang, bang" in "U.S. blues"!!). As I've said: very much a sixties album - but, and this is unusual: it's still very listenable. Oh yes, there is a little bit of extra information: you can also hear Brooks, Grody, Justin and Koehler on the album "You used to think" by Erica Pomerance (ESP CD 1099) - soon to be re-released!"
