Popol Vuh (Progressive/Avant-Garde/New Age/World Music {Alemanha})

Popol Vuh foi uma banda experimental em torno de Florian Fricke, fundada em Munique em 1969 e existente até 2001. A banda alemã é comumente atribuída ao gênero Krautrock. The band's lineup changed continuously over time. Holger Trülzsch (percussion) and Frank Fiedler (sound technology) were there from the beginning. Later, Daniel Fichelscher (Amon Düül II) joined as a member for a long time. A significant temporary member of the band was Klaus Wiese.

The band was initially signed to Liberty Records, where they were in the company of Amon Düül and Can, and where the debut LP "Affenstunde" - produced by Gerhard Augustin - was presented in 1970, a year after the band's founding. Popol Vuh's first two albums are characterized by the sound of percussion and the legendary Moog III synthesizer, which was later attributed to Klaus Schulze. The second album "In den Gärten Pharaos" was released in 1971 on the Pilz label, by Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser, and half of it was recorded live in a church. On their third album, "Hosianna-Mantra" (1972), Conny Veit and Korean singer Djong Yun joined the regular cast. Yun was also heard on the 1975 album "Einsjäger & Siebenjäger".

The 1970s are considered the most productive phase of Popol Vuh. In addition to studio albums and rare live performances, the band became known for their collaboration with director Werner Herzog, for which they created the soundtracks for the films "Aguirre", "Der Zorn Gottes", "Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht", "Herz aus Glas" and "Fitzcarraldo". A feature of recordings from this period is the use of the choir organ. This Mellotron-like precursor instrument from later samplers made it possible to integrate choir voices or orchestral sounds into the band's sound using tape technology. Since the 1980s, there is no reliable information about the origin and location of the instrument, nor are there photographic documents. It was used by several people in the Munich music scene in the 1970s and can also be heard on albums by Amon Düül II ("Wolf city" or "Tanz der Lemminge") and Klaus Doldinger.

The band's first appearance abroad took place in 1976, in Milan. From 1978 Popol Vuh returned to work temporarily with Gerhard Augustin, who produced other albums and soundtracks for the band. Starting in 1983, Popol Vuh fell into the shadow of Fricke and Fiedler's film production, which took place on numerous trips around the world. Albums were now released less frequently than in the 1970s, but still regularly.

In 1991, Popol Vuh returns with the album "For you and me", taking another break and returning with "City raga" (using voice recordings by respiratory therapist Maya Rose) in 1995. Current musical trends in the area of ​​techno now they also flowed into the work of the 1990s. In addition to Fricke and Fiedler, Guido Hieronymus was temporarily involved in the studio session. In 1999 the last album, "Messa di Orfeo" was released, also as a cinematographic edition.

With the untimely death of Florian Fricke on December 29, 2001, the story of Popol Vuh also came to an end.
