HISTÓRIA

OPOSSUM

Opossum vinha da área maior de Warburg, uma cidade situada no leste da Vestfália. Como precursora da Morpheus, tocava jazz-rock com elementos progressivos, ligeiramente comparáveis ​​ao som da Soft Machine ou Colosseum. A banda foi fundada na primavera de 1971 e três jovens estudantes eram seu núcleo: Peter Blömeke, Karl-Heinz Cornelius e Heinrich Holtgreve. Quando Peter Blömeke voltou para a banda trazendo consigo um micro-moog revolucionário, ele se apresentou não apenas na bateria, mas também na flauta e como percussionista. Nesta formação eles se aproximaram e por cerca de dois anos ficaram juntos, até o final da Opossum. O estranho nome da banda, a propósito, está ligado ao fato de Karl-Heinz usar uma bolsa de tabaco de pele de gambá no cinto. Para os promotores a banda distribuiu um folheto informativo, descrevendo entre outras coisas: "É dada grande importância à livre improvisação, dando ao músico individual o maior alcance possível. É de salientar que a ênfase principal não é dirigida ao músico individual como solista, mas ao som da banda como um todo. Isso significa não apenas enriquecer um solo com um trabalho intenso e acentuado de ritmo e percussão, mas também conduzir a uma performance em uníssono ou a figuras sonoras arranjadas. A estrutura de nossas faixas é semelhante a muitas dessas composições do jazz mais recente. As improvisações de um determinado tema são emolduradas por partes arranjadas fixas. Embora ainda sejam possíveis mudanças no ritmo ou efeitos criativos e espontâneos de surpresa".

Graças às suas habilidades como músicos, Opossum adquiriu muito rapidamente uma boa reputação na grande área de Warburg e além. Eles se apresentaram com Xhol e Sameti na Ruhr University of Bochum e com Tangerine Dream e Kraan no festival de verão da Universidade de Bonn. Seus shows duravam cerca de duas horas cada. Em 1974 gravaram algumas faixas, muito limpas e profissionais em sua sala de ensaio. Aliás, algumas das fotos do encarte deste CD foram tiradas durante essas gravações. O enquadramento de quatro dessas cinco faixas foi feito por Gerold Adler. Apenas "The sun and moon have come together" foi retirado do LP com o mesmo nome da The Fourth Way, banda de jazz-rock dos EUA (seu LP foi lançado em 1969 pela Capitol).

Infelizmente Opossum se separou, apenas um ano após as gravações terem sido feitas, em 1975. Karl-Heinz queria fazer jazz puro, mas Gerold queria elementos de rock mais melódico, e Robert precisava cuidar de seus estudos. Gerold Adler, Heinrich Holtgreve, Alfred Franke e Peter Blömeke, que haviam mudado para o baixo nesse meio tempo, tornaram-se agora Morpheus. Karl-Heinz Cornelius fundou com outros músicos a Jazz Drive. Alfred Franke tocava bateria em sua banda também. Foi ele quem se apresentou em ambos os sucessores da Opossum ao mesmo tempo.

MORPHEUS

Morpheus foi uma banda da região de Warburg, na região alemã de Westfalia, que tocava um jazz rock progressivo, sem vocais. Houve uma discussão sobre qual direção tomar musicalmente, pois dois dos membros queriam tocar free jazz enquanto os quatro acima mencionados desejavam adicionar mais elementos de rock. Esses quatro deixaram a banda. Por algum tempo, Peter Blömeke foi baterista da conhecida banda alemã Mythos. Mas no início de 1975, eles formaram sua própria banda, Morpheus. Isso também significou o fim de Opossum.

Enquanto Opossum tocava principalmente faixas improvisadas que eram muito longas e contínuas, Morpheus estava agora começando a trabalhar nos detalhes das faixas. Em seu livro "The crack in the cosmic egg", Steven e Alan Freeman escrevem escrevem "O LP auto-produzido da Morpheus é uma jóia desconhecida. Tem um som muito vivo, e a música é cheia de calor, melodias fortes e algums ótimos riffs...". Particularmente notável é o primeiro quarto da faixa "Abflug" com seus sons espaciais avassaladores. Enquanto isso, os colecionadores passaram a pagar mais de US$ 100 pelo LP. O CD foi retirado da fita master. A faixa bônus também foi gravada naquela mesma sessão.

HISTORY

OPOSSUM

Opossum was coming from the greater area of Warburg, a city situated in the east of Westphalia. As precursor of Morpheus it was playing jazz-rock with progressive elements, slightly comparable to the sound of Soft Machine or Colosseum. The band was founded in the spring of 1971 and three young students were its core: Peter Blömeke, Karl-Heinz Cornelius, and Heinrich Holtgreve. Peter Blömeke (born 1952), alias Rabe ("the Raven"), was on drums, and later as well on flute and synthesizer. He owned the necessary competence to his six years learning on drums. Though not playing a more important role than his co-founders, his picture can be found on the now available CD - a circumstance only due to the fact that no real good photo of the whole band had been on hand. Karl-Heinz Cornelius (born 1953) on bass came from The Moon of Warburg. He has had classes on guitar and violin for three years. Heinrich Holtgreve (born 1952) on alto sax and clarinet had attended the academy of music in Warburg and performed with various jazz bands.

During the next years the three of them tried to enlarge the band with various performers on organ, guitar, wind instruments, and even on violin. However the most of them didn't meet their high standards and turned out to be an impediment to their musical development. Thus it took them quite a while to encounter those musicians matching their demands. With Gerold Adler, Alfred Franke and Robert Binnewies, three students like themselves, they had found them. Gerold Adler (born 1953) performed on electric guitar and as well on the twelve string acoustic guitar, already having a ten year experience with this instrument. Alfred Franke (born 1954) became the new man on drums, while Peter Blömeke moved to Berlin for playing with the famous Mythos. Robert Binnewies performed on keyboards and harmonica. He has had a sound education on piano and came from Expression, a blues band from Hofgeismar.

When Peter Blömeke  came back to the band bringing with him a revolutionary micro-moog, he performed not only on drums but additionally on flute and as percussionist. In this line-up they grew close and for about two years stayed together, until the end of Opossum. The strange band name, by the way, is connected with Karl-Heinz's wearing an opossum skin tobacco pouch on his belt. For promoters the band gave out an information leaflet, describing among other things: "A great importance is attached to free improvisation, giving the individual musician the most scope possible. It is to stress though that the main emphasis is not aimed at the individual musician as soloist but to the band's sound as a whole. That means not only to enrich a solo with an intensive and accentuate work in rhythm and percussion, but also to lead up to an unison performance or to arranged sound figures. The structure of our tracks is similar to many of those compositions of the newer jazz. The improvisations of a given theme are framed by fixed arranged parts. Though changes in rhythm or creative and spontaneous effects of surprise are still possible".

Thanks to their abilities as musicians Opossum acquired very fast a good reputation in the greater area of Warburg and beyond. They performed with Xhol and Sameti at the Ruhr University of Bochum and with Tangerine Dream and Kraan at the summer festival at the University of Bonn. Their gigs were about two hours each. In 1974 they recorded some tracks, very clean and professional in their rehearsal room. By the way some of the photos in this CD's booklet were taken while doing those recordings. The framing of four out of five of these tracks was done by Gerold Adler. Only "The sun and moon have come together" was taken from the LP with the same name by The Fourth Way, a jazz-rock band from USA (its LP was released 1969 by Capitol).

Unfortunately Opossum split, only a year after the recordings were done, in 1975. Karl-Heinz rather wanted to do pure jazz, but Gerold wanted more melodic rock elements, and Robert needed to take care of his studies. Gerold Adler, Heinrich Holtgreve, Alfred Franke, and Peter Blömeke, who had switched to bass in the meantime, became now  Morpheus. Karl-Heinz Cornelius founded with other musicians Jazz Drive. Alfred Franke was on drums in his band, too. lt was him who performed in both successors of Opossum at the same time.

MORPHEUS

Morpheus was a band from the Warburg area in the German region of Westfalia which played a progressive jazz rock, without vocals. Gerold Adler (born 1953) on guitar, Peter "Rabe" ("Raven") Blömeke (born 1952) on bass, Heinrich Holtgreve (born 1952) on saxophone and Alfred Franke (born 1954) on drums had formerly been members of Opossum, which was founded in 1971. There was a quarrel about which direction to take musically, for two of the members wanted to play free jazz while the four above-mentioned wished to add more rock elements. These four left the band. For some time, Peter Blömeke was drummer in the well-known German band Mythos. But in early 1975, they formed their own band, Morpheus. This also meant the end of Opossum.

While Opossum had mainly been playing improvised tracks which were very long and went on and on, Morpheus was now setting out to work on the tracks in detail. It was highly important to them to try syncopated rhythms, sound shapes made up by means of echo and to fit them into their tracks. Soon they decided to record an LP, and so in spring 1976 came "Rabenteuer". All the tracks were written by the members of the band. The album was published independently in an edition of 500 copies. There was a mishap, however, for the record is a bit too slow and thus a semitone too low. This has been put right on this CD. Another mishap was that the painter drawing the cover artwork made the bird have an eagle's, not a raven's beak. The record's title is a pun made up of "Rabe" ("Raven") and "Abenteuer" ("Adventure") forming "Rabenteuer" (i.e. "Raventure").

In their book "The crack in the cosmic egg", Steven and Alan Freeman write "Morpheus' self-produced LP is an unknown gem. It has a very live sound to it, and the music is full of warmth, strong melodies and some great riffing ...". Particularly outstanding Is the first quarter of the track "Abflug" with its overwhelming spacy sounds. Collectors have meanwhile come to pay over US$100 for the LP. The CD has been taken from the master tape. The bonus track was also recorded in that very session.

At the beginning of 1977, Morpheus split up because Heinrich Holtgreve had moved to the city of Bochum (In the last three months, however, they had been playing with a new drummer). Today Heinrich Holtgreve plays in the bluegrass band Stringtime. Gerold Adler is a guitar teacher and plays in the band Gerold Adler Fusion which published the CD "Mixed up" (A-061153) independently in 1995. Alfred Franke is now a non-medical practioner in the town of Rosenheim, while Peter Blömeke is a street worker in Kassel nowadays. Morpheus was revived in 2001 and performed in 2002 on the festival of BurgHerzberg. In 2002, the band released the album "For a second".
