Jud's Gallery - SWF-sessions (volume 1) - 2000 (Progressive Rock {Alemanha})

A Jud's Gallery foi formada em 1971 por Jürgen "Judy" Winter. O único outro membro fundador nas sessões foi Peter Oehler, que já havia tocado com Judy de outras formas antes. Estes dois entusiastas perfeccionistas foram acompanhados na primeira sessão por Hannes Gremminger, Herbert Brandmeyer e a cantora Elly Lapp que deixou a banda pouco tempo depois. O apresentador do SWF, Hans-Jürgen Kiebenstein, foi fundamental ao convidar a banda para o Studio U1 em Baden-Baden para uma sessão sem overdubbing ou regravação, tarefa nada fácil para uma banda cuja idade média na época era de apenas 21 anos. um mundo até então desconhecido para a Jud's Gallery de concertos fora de sua cidade natal, Offenbach e arredores. Slots de suporte com bandas de renome internacional como Steamhammer, The Pretty Things, Beggar's Opera, Ekseption e Alexis Korner seguiram e também uma turnê alemã com a Golden Earring. Depois disso, a Jud's Gallery estava pronta para sua própria turnê como atração principal, incluindo festivais e shows dentro e ao redor da fronteira francesa.

Em um festival no sul da Alemanha, a banda foi abordada por Roland Schaeffer (Fashion Pink, Brainstorm, Guru Guru) que trabalhava como produtor para o SWF na época. Ele convidou a banda para sua segunda sessão do SWF. A banda gravou 4 músicas, incluindo a versão de 12 minutos de "Nordrach", com a formação de Jürgen "Judy" Winter, Peter Oehler, Clem Winterhalter e Sibi Siebert. Depois dessa sessão, era apenas uma questão de tempo até que a Jud's Gallery lançasse um LP. Foram feitos contatos com a gravadora Gorilla Music de Achim Reichel e pouco antes de entrarem em estúdio a banda se separou devido a dificuldades econômicas e diferenças musicais.

Apesar disso e graças às excelentes sessões radiofônicas podemos reviver um fantástico tempo de entusiasmo e esperança desta brilhante banda que na altura merecia mais. Depois da Jud's Gallery, Judy Winter mudou-se para a Renânia (Alemanha Ocidental) e em 1976 formou a Winterkrieg com o ex-membro da Sperrmüll, Helmut Krieg. Sibi Siebert, que também havia se mudado para a Renânia, juntou-se à banda como baterista logo depois, e agora a banda estava completa. Considerando a falta de uma base financeira sólida, um programa ao vivo teve que ser montado o mais rápido possível, para que a banda pudesse se manter por meio de shows. Winterkrieg conseguiu fazer isso muito em breve, não apenas tocando novas músicas, mas revertendo para títulos clássicos da época da Jud's Gallery ("Nordrach" e "Danger of shoot" etc.). Com a ajuda do roadie inglês e live-mixer William Hindmarch, chamado Billy, grande amigo do já bastante famoso guitarrista Gary Moore, a banda buscava uma carreira totalmente profissional. Embora logo tenham deixado sua marca como bons artistas ao vivo tanto na região quanto em toda a Alemanha, a banda não conseguiu fechar um contrato com a gravadora. Devido ao famoso som da Filadélfia na época e à onda disco que se seguiu logo depois, as gravadoras alemãs basicamente não estavam interessadas em rock feito à mão. A fim de garantir a sobrevivência da banda, Jürgen Winter e Helmut Krieg fundaram uma loja de música que fornecia a base financeira para a banda, e assim a banda pôde se manter ativa até os anos 1990 com diferentes formações.

Sibi Siebert deixou a Winterkrieg no final da década de 1970 e se juntou à Twelve Drummers Drumming, banda bastante conhecida e bem-sucedida na década de 1980. Ele ainda está ativo no mundo da música como especialista em partes de percussão. Peter Oehler também se manteve fiel à música e continuou tocando em diferentes bandas, por exemplo, com Nine Days Wonder em seu LP "Sonnet to Billy Frost" que apareceu em 1975. Hoje ele é diretor musical da Radio Ohr em Offenburg. A Jud's Gallery, ou mais especificamente o líder da banda Jürgen Winter, voltou às manchetes no final de 2000. Ele havia movido uma ação contra a Virgin Records e Gary Moore, a quem acusou de ter usado ilicitamente o tema da parte final do hit clássico da Jud's Gallery, "Nordrach", uma composição de Jürgen Winter. Esta foi uma acusação bastante explosiva, considerando o sucesso mundial da música. O processo ainda está pendente no Tribunal Distrital de Munique. O especialista encarregado pelo tribunal de verificar a acusação de plágio chegou à conclusão de que Gary Moore não poderia ter gravado a cativante melodia de guitarra de "Still got the blues" sem o conhecimento do título "Nordrach".

Hoje, Jürgen Winter trabalha como professor freelancer de música e atualmente treina a promissora banda Tweeks.

Jud's Gallery was formed in 1971 by Jürgen "Judy" Winter. The only other founding member at the sessions was Peter Oehler who had been playing with Judy in other guises before. These two enthusiastic perfectionists were accompanted for the first session by Hannes Gremminger, Herbert Brandmeyer and singer Elly Lapp who left the band shortly afterwards. SWF presenter Hans-Jürgen Kiebenstein was instrumental in inviting the band to Studio U1 in Baden-Baden for a session without any overdubbing or re-recording, no easy task for a band who's average age was at the time a mere 21. The sessions opened up a hitherto unknown world for Jud's Gallery of concerts outside of their native Offenbach and surrounding area. Support slots with internationally renowned bands such as Steamhammer, The Pretty Things, Beggar's Opera, Ekseption and Alexis Korner followed and also a German tour with Golden Earring. After this Jud's Gallery was ready for their own headlining tour including festivals and gigs in and around the French border.

At a festival in southern Germany the band was approached by Roland Schaeffer (Fashion Pink, Brainstorm, Guru Guru) who was working as a producer for SWF at the time. He invited the band for their second SWF session. The band recorded 4 songs, including the 12-minute version of "Nordrach", with the line-up of Jürgen "Judy" Winter, Peter Oehler, Clem Winterhalter and Sibi Siebert. After this session it was only a question of time before Jud's Gallery released an LP. Contacts to Achim Reichel's label Gorilla Music were made and shortly before they went into a studio the band broke up due to economic hardship and musical differences.

Despite this and thanks to the excellent radio sessions we can relive a fantastic time of enthusiasm and hope from this brilliant band that deserved more at the time. After Jud's Gallery Judy Winter moved to the Rhineland (West Germany) and in 1976 formed Winterkrieg with former Sperrmüll member Helmut Krieg. Sibi Siebert, who had also moved to the Rhineland, joined the band as a drummer shortly after, and now the band was complete. Considering the lack of a solid financial background a live program had to be set up as soon as possible, so that the band would be able to maintain itself through gigs. Winterkrieg managed to do so very soon by not only playing new songs, but reverting to classic titles from the Jud's Gallery time ("Nordrach" and "Danger of shoot" etc.). With the help of the English roadie and live-mixer William Hindmarch, called Billy, a good friend of the already quite famous guitarist Gary Moore, the band was striving for an entirely professional career. Although they soon made their mark as good live performers both within the region and throughout Germany, the band did not manage to strike a record deal. Due to the Philly sound famous at that time and the disco wave that followed soon after, the German record labels were basically not interested in hand-made rock music. In order to ensure the band's survival Jürgen Winter and Helmut Krieg founded a music store that provided the financial base for the band, and thus the band was able to be active well into the 1990ies with differing line-ups.

Sibi Siebert left Winterkrieg in the end of the seventies and joined the Twelve Drummers Drumming, a band that was quite well known and successful in the 1980ies. He is still active in the music business as a specialist for percussion parts. Peter Oehler, too, staid true to music and kept on playing in different bands, e.g. with Nine Days Wonder on their LP "Sonnet to Billy Frost" that appeared in 1975. Today he is musical director for Radio Ohr in Offenburg. Jud's Gallery, or, more specifically the bandleader Jürgen Winter, made the headlines again in the end of 2000. He had filed a lawsuit against Virgin Records and Gary Moore, whom he accused of having illicitly used the theme of the end part of the Jud's Gallery classic hit "Nordrach", a composition by Jürgen Winter. This was quite an explosive accusation, considering the worldwide success of the song. The proceedings are still pending with the District Court in Munich. The expert entrusted by the court with verifying the charge of plagiarism, came to the conclusion that Gary Moore could not have been able to record the catchy guitar tune of "Still got the blues" without knowledge of the title "Nordrach".

Today, Jürgen Winter works as a freelance music teacher and is currently coaching the up-and-coming band Tweeks.
