Sweet Smoke (Progressive Folk Jazz Rock {US})

Sweet Smoke foi uma banda de rock norte-americana formada no Brooklyn, Nova York, em 1967. Depois de gravar "Just a poke", Sweet Smoke tirou um ano para viajar. After their first performances in the U.S. and the Caribbean, the group moved to Germany and formed a commune in a farm house in the village of Hüthum, outside the city of Emmerich, about a kilometer (0.62 miles) from the border with the Netherlands. The group became well known in the region on and off the stage for their mixture of spirited musical performances combined with their interests in Eastern and Psychedelic philosophies. The original members when they arrived in Germany were Andy Dershin (bass guitar), Michael Fontana (tenor saxophone, alto recorder, vocal, percussion), Jay Dorfman (drums, percussion), Marvin Kaminowitz (lead guitar, vocal) and Victor Sacco (guitar). Victor would soon be replaced by Steve Rosenstein (rhythm guitar, vocal). In 1970, the group was approached by EMI, and they recorded their first LP, "Just a poke" with German record producer Konrad "Conny" Plank.

After recording "Just a poke", Sweet Smoke took a year off to travel. Most of the group drove the band's Ford Transit van overland to India for a spiritual journey in connection with the socio-spiritual group Ananda Marga. The group first learned of the success of "Just a poke", after meeting German tourists in Nepal. They returned to Europe, signed a new recording contract with EMI, and added Jeffrey Dershin (piano, percussion, vocal) as a full-time member. The group recorded their second LP "Darkness to light" at EMI studios in the Netherlands in 1973.

Later, still in 1973, Jeffery Dershin returned home to assume his role as a father, Michael Fontana left the group to return to India, and Steve Rosenstein was replaced by Rick Greenberg, aka Rick Rasa (rhythm guitar, sitar, vocal).

During a December 1973 concert at the Hochschule für Musik music conservatory in Berlin, EMI recorded what would become their first live album. But this was also their last performance, and it also became the group's last LP. The album was titled "Sweet Smoke live". The EMI studio crew struggled to squeeze their equipment into a small anteroom at the concert hall and was in for an extremely busy evening, since the microphones had to be rearranged several times during the show in order to properly capture the sound of the instruments, which alternated from song to song, with their 16 track Telefunken recorder.

"There was practically no sound check", remembers Wolfgang Thierbach, at the time sound engineer with EMI and instrumental in the production of several Triumvirat and Eloy albums. "Consequently we had to try and find a homogeneous basic setting while the first song was already being performed". The cut was processed later at the EMI studios in Cologne by producer John Möring, who mixed the original recording with great sensitivity, capturing the authentic character of the performance.

But while the German music magazine Sounds had been impressed with the two studio albums, reviewer Hermann Haring was not particularly taken with the new release, commenting: "The guys try really hard and play three endless numbers which go in one ear and out of the other". The band broke up in spring 1974, soon after their record saw the light of day.
