Kleptomania - Kleptomania [1968-1975] - 1996 (Heavy Psych/Hard Rock {Bélgica})

A banda de Bruxelas Kleptomania ainda é lembrada por ter sido uma das apresentações ao vivo mais conceituadas da Bélgica nos anos setenta. A primeira versão da banda foi montada em 1968 por Charlie Deraedemaeker (baixo, ex-Les Eagles) e John na bateria. Eles recrutaram os ex-membros da Liberty Six, Francis Goya (na guitarra) e Lou Deprijck (no vocal) para completar a formação. Logo depois, Charlie decidiu continuar com Wim Hombergen (guitarra, vocal) e Roger Wollaert (bateria), ambos ex-Four of a Kind, em vez dos anteriores.

Inicialmente eles continuaram como um trio, até conhecerem Dany Lademacher em um show organizado pelo empresário Wilfried Brits. Ele tocou guitarra em uma banda ao estilo Hendrix chamada Les Shakes e até conseguiu lançar dois singles com ela em 1967. Quando a banda tocou com esse mago da guitarra, tudo parecia se encaixar e Dany foi convidado a entrar.

Com o single de estréia da Kleptomania em vinil sendo lançado em 1970, as faixas apresentadas, "Kept woman" e "Out of a nightmare", pareciam bastante pesadas e comparações com a então popular Black Sabbath vieram à mente. No palco as coisas correram muito bem, como pôde ser visto no festival Puzzle P em Bruxelas (em junho com Wallace Collection como cabeça de cartaz) e especialmente no Bilzen Rock & Jazz Festival (em agosto junto com Badfinger e Screaming Lord Sutch), e até alguns concertos em Congo. A setlist não foi dominada apenas por suas próprias canções, mas incluiu também algumas canções populares da Led Zeppelin e da Taste de Rory Gallagher.

Mais tarde, em 1970, a banda lançou seu segundo single, combinando a rápida "I've got my woman by my side" com a forte "Lovely day", mas sem nenhum sucesso comercial real, embora a banda fosse bastante popular na época, com muitas indicações nas pesquisas pop de um dos principais jornais musicais: Télémoustique.

Como o contrato de gravação durou apenas dois singles, a Kleptomania assinou com a nova gravadora holandesa Flame e logo foi para a Holanda para gravar seu primeiro álbum, no estúdio Sound Push de Hilversum. Infelizmente, o azar a atingiu quando a Flame Records faliu e os garotos tiveram que parar de gravar. A banda permaneceu bastante popular no circuito de concertos (conseguiu abrir para Warhorse e Gong em um festival em Séloncourt na França em 19 de setembro de 1971), mas não conseguiu lançar um vinil adequado.

Em 1972, Patrick Gyssen se juntou aos garotos por um curto período, mas as músicas gravadas durante sua estada não viram a luz do dia até a compilação em formato CD de 1995. Nesse período, não se ouviu muito sobre a banda até que um single foi lançado em 1973 com um novo nome: Lee. O cantor Wim Hombergen parecia ter sido substituído por Michael Fowler. O lado A "Come on back to me" acabou sendo um trabalho mais polido e comercial, enquanto o lado B - "From L.A. to Chicago" - era um boogie rock com piano. Mais uma vez, as vendas foram decepcionantes e Fowler saiu logo para ser substituído pelo cantor original Wim Hombergen e reiniciar a banda sob o nome original.

Os garotos gravaram demos (incluindo o clássico dos anos 60 da The Byrds "So you want to be a rock and roll star") e se promoveram ainda mais fazendo shows (com outra aparição no festival de Bilzen em 1974, apoiando Humble Pie e The Alex Harvey Band e até mesmo um show no clube Marquee de Londres) e as coisas pareciam estar indo razoavelmente bem naquele estágio. Eles também gravaram outro single de duas faixas que saiu em 1975 pelo selo English Kingdom. "Mean old man" acompanhada de "Back to the country" gerou apenas uma pitada do poder e energia de seus shows e, portanto, falhou em causar muita impressão.

Mais dois singles lançados no ano seguinte, desta vez como Klepto, provaram que a banda se afastou ainda mais de suas raízes pesadas. Provavelmente desiludida por uma série de tentativas fracassadas, todos os seus membros desmoronaram em 1976, quando decidiram jogar a toalha completamente.

No entanto, o ano 1979 viu o álbum inacabado de 1971 receber um lançamento póstumo (um bootleg de capa branca de 500 cópias) como "Elephants lost". Apenas quatro músicas foram finalizadas, mas elas mostraram uma banda capaz tocando um bom rock pesado ("Moonchild" e "Stop") com órgãos às vezes mais sutis ("Travel" e "Visit for above"). Todas as outras canções foram improvisações e jams de estúdio.

Em 1977, Dany se juntou a Walter "Paa" Paduwa para escrever um álbum para a EMI Records sob o nome de T.U.S.H. (Charly Deraedemaeker toca baixo nele), mas uma oferta no mesmo ano para se juntar a Herman Brood & His Wild Romance foi o avanço que ele finalmente precisava. Ele tocou até 1981 - em três álbuns - com a banda e escreveu muitos singles de sucesso.

Entre maio e julho de 1980, Dany produziu o hit da Maquiavel, "New lines" (ele pode ser ouvido na reedição do álbum em formato CD tocando uma longa jam com a banda) e no mesmo estúdio também trabalhou em músicas de sua autoria. Outra produção de sucesso dele foi o álbum "Black out" dos roqueiros belgas The Kids em 1981. O mesmo ano viu o lançamento do álbum solo de Dany, "Lademacher's inner sleeve", com Wollaert na bateria, que acabou sendo um LP de rock mainstream. Outra banda de rock holandesa que convidou Dany para entrar foi a Vitesse, em 1984, e ele também pode ser ouvido em seu álbum de 1985 "Keepin' me alive". Durante os anos noventa, Lademacher tocou com The Radio's (4cds), Xander De Buisonjé e Paris Dandies.

Em 1983, Roger Wollaert conseguiu lançar um álbum junto com alguns membros da banda holandesa Kayak (Europe na CBS Records), enquanto alguns anos depois, em 1987, ele também tocou em "The cry of pleasure" da Machiavel e também tocou bateria em shows com a banda, substituindo Marc Isaye.

Hombergen e Deraedemaeker falharam em ressurgir nos últimos anos, mas o empresário Brits começou a trabalhar com a nova banda The Misters em 1978. Ainda assim, o outrora reverenciado nome da Kleptomania também foi mantido vivo pelo lançamento de um CD duplo de compilação em 1995. Ele continha todas as gravações, muitas inéditas, que a banda fez entre 1970 e 1976, com exceção do single de Lee.

Para promover uma feira de discos em Bruxelas (em outubro de 2004), um CD-single da Kleptomania com "Kept woman" e "I got my woman by my side" foi distribuído gratuitamente, enquanto em março de 2006 "Elephants lost" foi relançado em formato vinil pelo selo alemão Amber Soundroom, desta vez como um belo álbum duplo com faixas bônus dos singles.

Em dezembro de 2007, surgiu a notícia de que Wim, Roger, Charlie e Dany haviam começado a ensaiar novamente para um show que foi realizado em 8 de fevereiro de 2008, em Watermael-Boitsfort.

Brussels band Kleptomania is still remembered for being one of Belgium's most highly regarded live acts of the seventies. The first version of the band was put together in 1968 by Charlie Deraedemaeker (bass, ex-Les Eagles) and John on drums. They recruited former Liberty Six members Francis Goya (guitar) and Lou Deprijck (vocal) to complete the lineup. Soon after, Charlie decided to continue with Wim Hombergen (guitar, vocal) and Roger Wollaert (drums), both ex-Four of a Kind, instead of the previous ones.

Initially they continued as a trio, until they met Dany Lademacher at a concert organized by manager Wilfried Brits. He played guitar in a Hendrix-style band called Les Shakes and even managed to release two singles with it in 1967. When the band played with this guitar wizard, everything seemed to fall into place and Dany was asked to join.

With Kleptomania's debut single on vinyl being released in 1970, the featured tracks, "Kept woman" and "Out of a nightmare", sounded quite heavy and comparisons to the then-popular Black Sabbath came to mind. On stage things went very well, as can be seen at the Puzzle P festival in Brussels (in June with Wallace Collection as headliner) and especially at the Bilzen Rock & Jazz Festival (in August together with Badfinger and Screaming Lord Sutch), and even some concerts in Congo. The setlist was not only dominated by their own songs, but also included some popular songs from Led Zeppelin and Rory Gallagher's Taste.

Later in 1970, the band released their second single, combining the fast "I've got my woman by my side" with the strong "Lovely day", but without any real commercial success, although the band was quite popular at the time, with many nominations in the pop polls of one of the main musical journals: Télémoustique.

As the recording contract only lasted for two singles, Kleptomania signed with the new Dutch label Flame and soon went to Holland to record their first album, in Hilversum's Sound Push studio. Unfortunately, bad luck struck when Flame Records went bankrupt and the boys had to stop recording. The band remained quite popular on the concert circuit (they managed to open for Warhorse and Gong at a festival in Séloncourt, France on 19 September 1971), but failed to release a proper vinyl record.

In 1972, Patrick Gyssen joined the boys for a short time, but songs recorded during his stay didn't see the light of day until the 1995 CD compilation. In that period, not much was heard about the band until a single was released in 1973 under a new name: Lee. Singer Wim Hombergen seemed to have been replaced by Michael Fowler. The A-side "Come on back to me" turned out to be a more polished and commercial work, while the B-side - "From L.A. to Chicago" - was boogie rock with piano. Again sales were disappointing and Fowler soon left to be replaced by original singer Wim Hombergen and restart the band under the original name.

The boys recorded demos (including The Byrds' 60's classic "So you want to be a rock and roll star") and promoted themselves further by playing shows (with another appearance at the Bilzen festival in 1974 supporting Humble Pie and The Alex Harvey Band and even a show at London's Marquee club) and things seemed to be going reasonably well at that stage. They also recorded another two track single which came out in 1975 on the English Kingdom label. "Mean old man" backed with "Back to the country" generated only a hint of the power and energy of their concerts and thus failed to make much of an impression.

Two more singles released the following year, this time as Klepto, proved that the band had strayed even further from their heavy roots. Probably disillusioned by a series of failed attempts, all of its members fell apart in 1976 when they decided to throw in the towel altogether.

However, the year 1979 saw the unfinished 1971 album receive a posthumous release (a white cover bootleg of 500 copies) as "Elephants lost". Only four songs were finished, but they showed a capable band playing good hard rock ("Moonchild" and "Stop") with sometimes more subtle organs ("Travel" and "Visit for above"). All other songs were improvisations and studio jams.

In 1977, Dany teamed up with Walter "Paa" Paduwa to write an album for EMI Records under the name T.U.S.H. (Charly Deraedemaeker plays bass on it), but an offer the same year to join Herman Brood & His Wild Romance was the breakthrough he finally needed. He played until 1981 - on three albums - with the band and wrote many hit singles.

Between May and July 1980, Dany produced Machiavel's hit "New lines" (he can be heard on the reissue of the album in CD format playing a long jam with the band) and in the same studio he also worked on songs of his own. Another successful production of his was the album "Black out" by Belgian rockers The Kids in 1981. The same year saw the release of Dany's solo album, "Lademacher's inner sleeve", featuring Wollaert on drums, which turned out to be a rock LP mainstream. Another Dutch rock band that invited Dany to join was Vitesse in 1984, and he can also be heard on their 1985 album "Keepin' me alive". During the nineties, Lademacher played with The Radio's (4cds), Xander De Buisonjé and Paris Dandies.

In 1983, Roger Wollaert managed to release an album together with some members of the Dutch band Kayak (Europe on CBS Records), while a few years later, in 1987, he also played on Machiavel's "The cry of pleasure" and also played drums in concerts with the band, replacing Marc Isaye.

Hombergen and Deraedemaeker have failed to re-emerge in recent years, but manager Brits began working with new band The Misters in 1978. Still, the once-revered name of Kleptomania was also kept alive by the release of a compilation double CD in 1995. It contained all of the recordings, many unreleased, that the band made between 1970 and 1976, with the exception of Lee's single.

To promote a record fair in Brussels (October 2004), a Kleptomania CD-single with "Kept woman" and "I got my woman by my side" was distributed free of charge, while in March 2006 "Elephants lost" was re-released in vinyl format by the German label Amber Soundroom, this time as a beautiful double album with bonus tracks from the singles.

In December 2007, news broke that Wim, Roger, Charlie and Dany had started rehearsing again for a show which was held on February 8, 2008, in Watermael-Boitsfort.
