Ekseption (Progressive Symphonic Jazz Rock {Países Baixos})

Ekseption foi uma banda holandesa de rock sinfônico que atuou principalmente nas décadas de 1960 e 1970. Ekseption teve vários sucessos e ganhou um Edison em 1970, um dos prêmios musicais mais antigos do mundo e o mais antigo da Holanda. A banda é bastante conhecida por sua maneira única de interpretar temas clássicos combinados aos elementos do rock progressivo e do jazz, trazendo uma roupagem moderna e divertida, sem exageros, sem exibicionismo, mas apresentando a alta qualidade dos músicos.

HISTÓRIA

SURGIMENTO

Ekseption surgiu em 1967, inicialmente como uma banda escolar, da cidade de Haarlem, chamada The Jokers, fundada em 1958 por Hans Alta (baixo), Rob Alta (guitarra), Rein van den Broek (trompete, flugelhorn, saxofone), Tim Griek (bateria) e Huib van Kampen (guitarra, saxofone). No primeiro ano Ton Heydenrijk (saxofone) e Hans Timmer (órgão) também tocaram. O grupo tocou principalmente covers de músicas de r&b, jazz e pop. Em 1965, a The Jokers mudou seu nome para Incrowd, mas devido ao sucesso de outro grupo holandês de mesmo nome, seus membros tiveram que inventar outro nome. Em 1967, a banda passa a chamar-se Ekseption. Porém, Ton Heydenrijk e Hans Timmer deixam a banda. Rob Kruisman entra e assume a direção musical.

PRIMEIROS SUCESSOS

Em abril de 1967, o tecladista Rick van der Linden junta-se à Ekseption. EKSEPTION 3

Ainda em 1970, também foi gravado o terceiro álbum da Ekseption intitulado simplesmente como "Ekseption 3". Peter de Leeuwe estava de volta e Michel van Dijk, insatisfeito com a ênfase na música instrumental, havia deixado o grupo e mais tarde emergiria como cantor das bandas Brainbox e Alquin. Ele foi substituído por Steve Allet, que veio do grupo Ginger Ale. EKSEPTION 00.04

Em 1971, o cantor Steve Allet deixou o grupo. Rick van der Linden gravou a música "Piccadilly sweet" - uma peça de 15 minutos - com a Royal Philharmonic Orchestra de Londres. EKSEPTION 5

No ano seguinte foi lançado "Ekseption 5", uma mistura de clássico, rock e jazz, com canções como "À la Turka" (baseada em "Rondo alla Turka" de Mozart, da "Sonata para Piano nº 11 em Lá, K331: 3º movimento") e arranjos de "Sonata nº 2 em Mi menor" e "Siciliano em Sol e Concerto para violino e orquestra em Lá menor: 1. Vivace" de J. S. Bach. O que chama a atenção é o choro do filho de Rick van der Linden na balada "My son" e uma versão instrumental de "For example" do grupo que os inspirou, The Nice, sob o título "For example/For sure", música inicialmente creditada à Emerson e Van der Linden, mas em lançamentos posteriores à Keith Emerson e Lee Jackson. Outras músicas de destaque são "Midbar session" e a melódica "Virginal".

Nesse ínterim, a banda estava ocupada com muitas turnês pela Europa: ela era especialmente popular na Escandinávia. No entanto, a pressão causou atrito entre os diferentes membros do grupo.

TRINITY

1972 foi o último grande ano de sucesso da Ekseption. As lutas internas surgiram cada vez mais. Em março de 1973, o saxofonista e flautista Dick Remelink e o baterista Peter de Leeuwe foram expulsos por Van der Linden devido ao "crescimento musical". Eles foram substituídos por Jan Vennik (flauta, sax soprano e tenor) e Pieter Voogt (bateria, percussão). Dick Remelink juntou-se à Galaxy Lin. O sexto álbum, "Trinity", foi gravado com a nova formação.

Apesar de o sucesso fora da Europa não ter sido grande, foram feitas várias prensagens dos primeiros seis LPs. "Ekseption", "Beggar Julia's time trip" e "Ekseption 5" nos Estados Unidos, e todos os seis no Canadá, Reino Unido e Israel. Além de diversas prensagens em outros países europeus e sul-americanos. Só existe uma edição japonesa de "Beggar Julia's time trip". As capas também diferem em design. Principalmente na Alemanha, onde o grupo era muito popular, as cópias dos LPs foram feitas ainda em 1976, pois havia muita procura por eles.

Em novembro de 1973, o próprio Van der Linden foi expulso da banda. No início de 1974, exigiu em processo sumário a proibição do uso do nome Ekseption por seus ex-colegas. O pedido foi concedido três dias depois. No entanto, em consulta mútua, os quatro membros da Ekseption concordaram com Van der Linden que a banda poderia continuar a atuar sob este nome.

Nesse ínterim, Van der Linden iniciou um novo grupo com Peter de Leeuwe, Ace, que seria apresentado ainda naquele ano sob o nome de Trace.

BINGO

Na Ekseption, Hans Jansen (teclados, ex-Think Tank) assumiu o lugar de Van der Linden. O convidado do sétimo álbum, "Bingo" (1974), foi Hans Hollestelle (guitarra, violino). Sem o dominante Rick van der Linden, Ekseption soou mais solta e jazzística, com mais espaço para solos dos outros instrumentos. A maioria das músicas deste álbum foram compostas e arranjadas por Vennik, Jansen e Van den Broek. O álbum inclui músicas como "Nightwalk" e uma nova versão da lançada anteriormente "Sabre dance" (de Khachaturian). A música "De fietser" teve algum sucesso como single, mas o álbum permaneceu preso na faixa intermediária em termos de classificação.

MINDMIRROR

O oitavo álbum, "Mindmirror" (1975), com canções de orientação clássica, bem como canções de Piet Souer e Ramses Shaffy, também não teve muito sucesso comercial fazendo com que seus membros decidam se separar. 

Alguns membros permaneceram visíveis na profissão musical, como Rein van den Broek, Jan Vennik, Hans Jansen e Hans Hollestelle, que formaram o grupo de jazz rock Spin com Jan Hollestelle (baixo) e Cees Kranenburg (bateria). Cor Dekker sucedeu Jaap van Eik na Trace.

BACK TO THE CLASSICS

Em 1977, outro disco da Ekseption foi lançado, com o título revelador "Back to the classics", mas o álbum teve pouco sucesso. A formação da banda era a mesma do álbum "Bingo", mas sem Hans Hollestelle.

EKSEPTION '78

O insucesso também se aplica ao décimo ábum da Ekseption, "Ekseption '78", no qual, além de Van den Broek, Dekker, De Leeuwe e Remelink, também teve a contribuição de Rick van der Linden. Além da marcante faixa de abertura, um trecho de "St. Matthew passion" de Bach, este álbum incluía "Your home" de Van der Linden e arranjos de "Impromptu" de Schubert, "Summertime" de Gershwin e "The cat" de Lalo Schifrin. "Ekseption '78" foi o único álbum da banda lançado pelo selo CNR (e Decca na Alemanha): mais tarde seria relançado em formato CD sob os títulos "The very best of Ekseption" (1991), "Ekseption" (1994) e "Hollands glorie" (2001). DANCE MACABRE

Em 1981, os antigos membros da Ekseption, Van den Broek, Van der Linden e Remelink, se reuniram, complementados pelos dois ex-membros da Kayak, Max Werner (bateria, percussão, marimba) e Johan Slager (guitarra, baixo). Juntos, eles gravaram o álbum "Dance macabre" como uma coletânea de sucessos antigos da banda como "Air", "Rhapsody in blue", "The 5th" e "Peace planet". No entanto, teve pouco sucesso comercial.

EKSEPTION '89

DVD

Com a ajuda de Rein van den Broek, o material de vídeo foi lançado em formato DVD no ano 2003 com o título "The story of Ekseption". As gravações incluem entrevistas, clipes, documentário e material ao vivo em Israel, França e Itália, entre outros. O DVD contém, entre outras coisas, material que ainda não havia sido exibido ao público. O DVD veio em uma determinada edição com um CD extra que trazia as gravações ao vivo na Alemanha em 1993. MEMBROS FALECIDOS DA EKSEPTION

HISTORY

EMERGENCE

Ekseption emerged in 1967, initially as a school band from the city of Haarlem, called The Jokers, founded in 1958 by Hans Alta (bass), Rob Alta (guitar), Rein van den Broek (trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone), Tim Griek (drums) and Huib van Kampen (guitar, saxophone). In the first year Ton Heydenrijk (saxophone) and Hans Timmer (organ) also played. The group mainly played covers of r&b, jazz and pop songs. In 1965, The Jokers changed their name to Incrowd, but due to the success of another Dutch group of the same name, its members had to come up with another name. In 1967, the band changed its name to Ekseption. However, Ton Heydenrijk and Hans Timmer leave the band. Rob Kruisman joins and takes over musical direction.

FIRST SUCCESSES

In April 1967, keyboardist Rick van der Linden joined Ekseption. In 1968, Ekseption won first prize at the Loosdrecht Jazz Competition and instantly became known far beyond Dutch borders. The band signed a recording contract with Phonogram, which would result in their first LP the following year, entitled "Ekseption". This began a successful five-year period, during which the band toured throughout Europe and played at the Olympia in Paris, the Philharmonie in Hamburg and the Palladium in London.

In 1968, Hans Alta and Tim Griek left the band and were replaced by Cor Dekker (bass) and Peter de Leeuwe (drums), both former members of The Hottletts. Rob Alta had previously resigned. Tim Griek would later become a producer for Brainbox and André Hazes, among other artists and bands.

CHANGE OF COURSE

In 1969, Ekseption was inspired by the English band The Nice to adapt classical pieces and thus change the musical direction to a mix of rock and classical music. Rick van der Linden graduated from a classical music conservatory and has experience playing in various pop and jazz groups, such as the occasional Swing Combo and the Ferdinand Povel Quartet. With his arrangements of classical works by Bach, Albinoni, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Khachaturian, he was largely responsible for the band's completely new, unique and energetic sound.

The first single, "The 5th" or "The fifth" (an arrangement of Beethoven's "Fifth symphony" and featuring fragments of other Beethoven compositions, including the "Mondschein Sonata"), reached number 3 in the charts. The group also had success with "Rhapsody in blue" (by Gershwin) and "Air" (by Bach). "Air" and "The 5th" were arrangements created in collaboration between Van den Broek, Van der Linden, De Leeuwe, Van Kampen and Kruisman. "Air" was number one on the Hilversum 3 Top 30 for two weeks in 1969. Ekseption's first album, "Ekseption", was released in 1969. That same year, however, Rob Kruisman and Huib van Kampen left the band, due to to differences of opinion between them about the musical direction to be followed. Huib van Kampen and Dick Remelink (sax, flute, ex-Pocomania) join the band, the latter replacing Rob Kruisman, who joined the band Island.

BEGGAR JULIA'S TIME TRIP

In the early 1970s, Ekseption's permanent lineup consisted of Rein van den Broek, Rick van der Linden, Cor Dekker, Dick Remelink and Peter de Leeuwe. Singer Michel van Dijk participated in Ekseption's second album, as did Dennis Whitebread (real name: Witbraad), who temporarily replaced Peter de Leeuwe on drums. That year's hit concept album, "Beggar Julia's time trip", won an Edison award. The album depicts a woman's journey from the year 900 to the present, which has brought her into contact with all types of composers and musical styles. Some of the songs on this album are the jazz-rock song "Pop giant", the baroque "Feelings" and the vocal song "Julia". The album also contains a number of classically oriented original compositions by Rick van der Linden. The song "Concerto" begins with the first movement of Tchaikovsky's "Piano concerto" and then moves to the second movement of Beethoven's "Piano sonata No. 8 in C minor".

EKSEPTION 3

Still in 1970, Ekseption's third album was also recorded, simply titled "Ekseption 3". Peter de Leeuwe was back and Michel van Dijk, dissatisfied with the emphasis on instrumental music, had left the group and would later emerge as a singer in the bands Brainbox and Alquin. He was replaced by Steve Allet, who came from the Ginger Ale group. The album, a musical painting of the fairy tale "The little prince" ("Le petit prince") by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, reached number one on the album chart. The song "Peace planet" (inspired by Bach's "Suite nº 2") became a hit as a single. "Ekseption 3", with songs like "Morning rose", "On Sunday they will kill the world", "B 612" and "Another history" (a jazzy ballad) is the most vocal of all Ekseption albums. However, Van der Linden's two-part instrumental suite, "Piece for symphonic and rock group in A minor", took center stage and this album would be the group's last with solo vocal numbers. This album is the only one in the series that contains an almost live song: "Rondo".

EKSEPTION 00.04

In 1971, singer Steve Allet left the group. Rick van der Linden recorded the song "Piccadilly sweet" - a 15-minute piece - with London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The other members of Ekseption later recorded their parts in the Netherlands. The subsequent fourth album, "Ekseption 00.04", contained the now familiar instrumental arrangements of classical works as well as jazz songs. In the song "Choral" you can also hear a group of vocalists, members of the Dutch Chamber Choir. This album also reached number one on the album sales chart.

EKSEPTION 5

The following year, "Ekseption 5" was released, a mix of classical, rock and jazz, with songs such as "À la Turka" (based on Mozart's "Rondo alla Turka", from "Piano Sonata No. 11 in A, K331: 3rd movement") and arrangements of "Sonata nº 2 in E minor" and "Siciliano in G and Concerto for violin and orchestra in A minor: 1. Vivace" by J. S. Bach. What draws attention is the crying of Rick van der Linden's son in the ballad "My son" and an instrumental version of "For example" by the group that inspired them, The Nice, under the title "For example/For sure", song initially credited to Emerson and Van der Linden, but on later releases to Keith Emerson and Lee Jackson. Other standout songs are "Midbar session" and the melodic "Virginal".

In the meantime, the band was busy with many tours in Europe: it was especially popular in Scandinavia. However, the pressure caused friction between different members of the group.

TRINITY

1972 was Ekseption's last big year of success. Infighting arose more and more. In March 1973, saxophonist and flutist Dick Remelink and drummer Peter de Leeuwe were expelled by Van der Linden due to "musical growth". They were replaced by Jan Vennik (flute, soprano and tenor sax) and Pieter Voogt (drums, percussion). Dick Remelink joined Galaxy Lin. The sixth album, "Trinity", was recorded with the new lineup.

Highlights on this album include the contributions of flutist Vennik and the Dutch Chamber Choir on the song "Finale III", as well as the nine-minute jam "Improvisation". Rick van der Linden played piano, pipe organ, spinet, ARP 2600 synthesizer and Mellotron. "Trinity" was not a major commercial success.

Although success outside Europe was not great, several pressings of the first six LPs were made. "Ekseption", "Beggar Julia's time trip" and "Ekseption 5" in the United States, and all six in Canada, the United Kingdom and Israel. In addition to several pressings in other European and South American countries. There is only one Japanese edition of "Beggar Julia's time trip". The covers also differ in design. Mainly in Germany, where the group was very popular, copies of the LPs were made in 1976, as there was a lot of demand for them.

In November 1973, Van der Linden himself was expelled from the band. At the beginning of 1974, he demanded in summary proceedings a ban on the use of the name Ekseption by his former colleagues. The request was granted three days later. However, in mutual consultation, the four members of Ekseption agreed with Van der Linden that the band could continue to perform under this name.

In the meantime, Van der Linden started a new group with Peter de Leeuwe, Ace, which would be introduced later that year under the name Trace.

BINGO

At Ekseption, Hans Jansen (keyboards, ex-Think Tank) took over from Van der Linden. The guest on the seventh album, "Bingo" (1974), was Hans Hollestelle (guitar, violin). Without the dominant Rick van der Linden, Ekseption sounded looser and jazzier, with more room for solos from the other instruments. Most of the songs on this album were composed and arranged by Vennik, Jansen and Van den Broek. The album includes songs such as "Nightwalk" and a new version of the previously released "Sabre dance" (by Khachaturian). The song "De fietser" had some success as a single, but the album remained stuck in the mid-range in terms of ratings.

MINDMIRROR

The eighth album, "Mindmirror" (1975), with classically oriented songs as well as songs by Piet Souer and Ramses Shaffy, also did not have much commercial success causing its members to decide to disband.

Some members remained visible in the music profession, such as Rein van den Broek, Jan Vennik, Hans Jansen and Hans Hollestelle, who formed the jazz rock group Spin with Jan Hollestelle (bass) and Cees Kranenburg (drums). Cor Dekker succeeds Jaap van Eik at Trace.

BACK TO THE CLASSICS

In 1977, another Ekseption record was released, with the telling title "Back to the classics", but the album had little success. The group's lineup was the same as on the album "Bingo", but without Hans Hollestelle.

EKSEPTION '78

The failure also applies to Ekseption's tenth album, "Ekseption '78", on which, in addition to Van den Broek, Dekker, De Leeuwe and Remelink, Rick van der Linden also contributed. In addition to the striking opening track, an excerpt from Bach's "St. Matthew passion", this album included Van der Linden's "Your home" and arrangements of Schubert's "Impromptu", Gershwin's "Summertime" and "The cat" by Lalo Schifrin. "Ekseption '78" was the band's only album released on the CNR label (and Decca in Germany): it would later be re-released in CD format under the titles "The very best of Ekseption" (1991), "Ekseption" (1994) and "Hollands glory" (2001). It is the only Ekseption album where Rick uses his Yamaha GX-1 synthesizer.

Rein van den Broek and Rick van der Linden released a double album in 1980 under the name "Cum laude".

DANCE MACABRE

In 1981, former Ekseption members Van den Broek, Van der Linden and Remelink reunited, complemented by two former Kayak members Max Werner (drums, percussion, marimba) and Johan Slager (guitar, bass). Together, they recorded the album "Dance macabre" as a collection of the band's old hits such as "Air", "Rhapsody in blue", "The 5th" and "Peace planet". However, it had little commercial success.

In 1988 there was a continuation of "Cum laude", with Van der Linden and Van den Broek, reinforced by guest musicians, including Peter de Leeuwe on percussion.

EKSEPTION '89

In 1989, Ekseption tried again with the old line-up (Van der Linden, Van den Broek, De Leeuwe and Remelink). With the cooperation of Frans Muys van de Moer (bass), Johan Zwart (guitar) and Eddie Conard (percussion), the band recorded a second reunion album, entitled "Ekseption '89". But the formula of some old hits like "The 5th", "Air" and "Peace planet", complemented with more recent songs, no longer worked and the band was dissolved again. However, its members met occasionally, for example at the Eberhard Schoener event in Germany in 1991.

25 YEARS REUNION

Although the band was disbanded several times, the name Ekseption survived. In 1994, a live CD was finally released: "The reunion", later titled "Best of Ekseption". The recordings were made in November 1993 at the Kurhaus in Eberbach and the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg. The formation was made up of Van der Linden, Van den Broek and Remelink, with the participation of Max Werner and Frans Muys van der Moer.

NEW EKSEPTION

In 2003, Rick van der Linden founded a new Ekseption, with which he toured the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. In addition to Van der Linden and his wife Inez (vocal), the group was made up of Canadians Mark Inneo (drums, percussion), Bob Shields (guitar), Meredith Nelson (bass) and Peter Tong (keyboards).

DVD

With the help of Rein van den Broek, the video material was released in DVD format in 2003 under the title "The story of Ekseption". The recordings include interviews, clips, documentary and live material in Israel, France and Italy, among others. The DVD contains, among other things, material that had not yet been shown to the public. The DVD came in a certain edition with an extra CD that featured the live recordings in Germany in 1993. The CD was titled "Live in Germany" in this edition.

DECEASED MEMBERS OF EKSEPTION

• On February 13, 1988, former drummer Tim Griek died in a car accident at the age of 43.
• On May 13, 2003, guitarist, saxophonist and co-founder Huib van Kampen died at the age of 59.
• On October 26, 2005, bassist Cor Dekker died in his hometown of IJmuiden, aged 57, from bladder cancer.
• On January 22, 2006, Rick van der Linden died at the age of 59 as a result of the cerebral infarction that struck him two months earlier.
• On 4 February 2014, Peter de Leeuwe died at the age of 66 as a result of a cardiac arrest.
• On May 10, 2015, Rein van den Broek died at the age of 69 from heart failure.
• On March 10, 2020, flutist Jan Vennik died at the age of 84.
• Keyboardist Hans Jansen passed away in August 26, 2023.
• On August 30, 2023, multi-instrumentalist Rob Kruisman died at age 76 due to pancreatic cancer.
