Kayak (Progressive Rock {Países Baixos})

Kayak é uma banda de rock holandesa formada por Ton Scherpenzeel e Pim Koopman em Hilversum em 1972. Em 1973, o álbum de estréia "See see the sun" foi lançado, incluindo três singles de sucesso. Sua popularidade ocorreu principalmente na Holanda, com o hit "Ruthless Queen" alcançando a sexta posição nas paradas holandesas em março de 1979. A banda se separou em 1982 após lançar nove álbuns.

Em 1999, a banda foi convidada para se apresentar no programa de TV "De Vrienden van Amstel Live". Após esta apresentação, a banda decidiu se reformar e lançou mais nove álbuns de estúdio e três álbuns ao vivo.

HISTÓRIA

COMEÇOS

As raízes do Kayak estão na cidade holandesa de Hilversum, onde os membros fundadores e amigos da vizinhança Ton Scherpenzeel (teclados, baixo) e Pim Koopman (bateria, guitarra) tocaram juntos em várias bandas como Balderdash (1967) e High Tide Formation (1970). O guitarrista Johan Slager tocou na formação final da High Tide Formation até o grupo se separar em 1971. Naquele mesmo ano, Ton, Pim e Johan começaram a gravar uma série de demos (um projeto chamado Ten Ride Ticket) e ocasionalmente tocavam ao vivo (como Alta Quis). Nessa época, Ton e Pim começaram a estudar na Hilversum Music Academy, onde o colega Max Werner uniu forças com Ton e Pim, emprestando sua voz única aos seus esforços musicais. O principal instrumento clássico de Ton era o contrabaixo, Pim e Max estudavam percussão. Quando o baixista Cees van Leeuwen (substituindo o francês Jean Michel Marion) completou a primeira formação, o grupo que viria a se tornar Kayak conseguiu um contrato de gravação com a EMI - após ser demitida pela Phonogram que tinha um interesse inicial na banda, mesmo tendo gravado algumas demos com a banda, acabou desistindo quando Ton e Pim se recusaram a gravar outro material que não fosse o seu.

1972-1974: LANÇADA

Kayak foi lançada pela EMI e pelo empresário Frits Hirschland como um novo supergrupo, embora os membros individuais tivessem apenas 20 anos de idade, tivessem pouca experiência como banda ao vivo e basicamente não tivessem provado nada no mundo da música além de ter uma mente original e teimosa de seus próprios. Os dois primeiros álbuns, "See see the sun" e "Kayak II" entregaram três sucessos modestos ("Lyrics", "Mammoth" e "Wintertime"), mas o mais importante foi que fizeram o nome da Kayak como uma banda jovem e talentosa com um crescente número de seguidores progressistas.

1974-1976: MUDANÇAS

Em 1974, o baixista Cees van Leeuwen decidiu que não poderia conciliar seus estudos universitários com a agitada turnê e agenda de gravações da banda e saiu. Ele foi substituído por Bert Veldkamp. Nesta formação a banda gravou seu terceiro álbum, "Royal bed bouncer", que gerou outro modesto single de sucesso, "Chance for a life". Se os dois primeiros álbuns mostraram um equilíbrio entre os dois principais compositores da banda, Pim e Ton, "Royal bed bouncer" mostrou Scherpenzeel no auge criativo. A banda continuou em turnê e em 1976 era uma banda de destaque na cena musical holandesa e belga. Uma briga entre o técnico Hirschland e a EMI levou à saída do grupo da EMI. A banda então recorreu à Phonogram, a mesma empresa que em 1971 se recusou a assinar com ela. Com o LP número quatro, "The last encore", Pim Koopman encontrou-se solidamente de volta à cadeira de escritor com Ton. O primeiro grande revés veio no final daquele ano, quando Pim deixou a banda. O baixista Bert Veldkamp também saiu, então em dois meses a banda perdeu sua seção rítmica completa e um dos principais compositores do grupo.

1977-1978: STARLIGHT DANCER

No final de 1976, Pim e Bert foram substituídos por Charles Schouten e Theo de Jong. Esta formação gravou "Starlight dancer". A faixa-título, um dos clássicos de todos os tempos da banda, alcançou a 14ª posição nas paradas holandesas, e a Kayak parecia estar de volta. O lançamento americano de mesmo nome (uma compilação dos LPs holandeses "The last encore" e "Starlight dancer") foi até um pequeno sucesso nos EUA, com "Want you to be mine" alcançando a posição 55 nas paradas da Billboard. Kayak foi até eleita a "banda mais promissora do ano" pelo influente jornal musical americano Record World. Mas com o passar do tempo, as diferenças musicais entre os membros originais e os novos membros pareciam irreconciliáveis, e dentro de 18 meses a banda (ou o que restou dela) novamente teve que encontrar um novo baixista e baterista. E não só isso...

1978-1981: RUTHLESS QUEEN

O que se seguiu foi um ano muito caótico, no qual o rompimento da banda muitas vezes parecia próximo, porque apesar da possibilidade de uma turnê americana e da tão esperada descoberta internacional, o vocalista Max Werner deixou claro que queria se retirar do cargo de vocalista da Kayak. Werner sempre se sentiu como um baterista e mais ou menos se viu preso no papel de vocalista por causa de sua voz única. Quando a cadeira da bateria ficou vaga, ele contou aos outros sobre seu desejo de se tornar o novo baterista da banda, o que significou que a Kayak teve que começar a procurar um novo vocalista. Todos os planos tiveram que ser descartados e o grupo basicamente teve que começar do zero. Edward Reekers se tornou o novo vocalista. Com ele, três "recém-chegados" se juntaram à banda: Peter Scherpenzeel (irmão mais novo de Ton) assinou como o novo baixista, enquanto as backing vocals Irene Linders (esposa de Ton e letrista de muitas de suas músicas a partir de então) e Katherine Lapthorn foram adicionadas para dar à banda uma identidade totalmente nova. Todas essas mudanças, e o lançamento do novo álbum "Phantom of the night", significaram uma ruptura significativa com o passado em mais de um aspecto - para muitos fãs antigos esta banda tinha pouco a ver com a Kayak original. Mas o "novo" grupo alcançou repentina e inesperadamente um público maior do que nunca. "Ruthless Queen" foi o primeiro e único single de grande sucesso da Kayak (número 4 nas paradas holandesas). O álbum chegou ao primeiro lugar, recebendo disco de platina por mais de 100.000 cópias vendidas na Holanda.

1981-1982: PERISCOPE LIFE

O próximo álbum, "Periscope life" (1980), foi gravado em Los Angeles. Tinha um estilo semelhante, mas faltava o grande sucesso e o fator surpresa que tornaram seu antecessor um sucesso fenomenal. No entanto, ainda superou as vendas dos primeiros cinco álbuns. Com seu próximo álbum, "Merlin" (1981), Kayak retornou às suas raízes originais do rock progressivo e sinfônico, com uma suíte sobre o lendário mágico medieval no lado A. Este álbum, junto com "Royal bed bouncer", é geralmente considerado como o melhor trabalho da Kayak. Com o declínio do sucesso comercial, porém, surgiram lutas pessoais e musicais dentro da banda. A situação financeira desesperadora em que o empresário Hirschland levou a banda e seus membros só piorou as coisas.

Enquanto Max Werner celebrava o primeiro single como cantor solo na Alemanha com "Rain in May", a banda finalmente entrou em colapso sob seu próprio peso. Kayak (agora sem as duas backing vocals) ainda conseguiu produzir um álbum semi-ao vivo, "Eyewitness". Este LP continha três músicas novas, mas consistia principalmente em gravações feitas "ao vivo" em estúdio, com apenas pequenos reparos e dublagens adicionadas. Os aplausos foram dobrados, algo que ficou claro quando mais tarde a versão em CD do álbum foi lançada: Ton Scherpenzeel explicou no encarte que havia decidido editar e relançar o álbum sem aplausos e gritos do público, algo que sempre o irritou tanto que ele nunca foi capaz de ouvir "Eyewitness" em sua forma original.

Depois do que foi na verdade um rompimento, Ton Scherpenzeel tentou recomeçar com a Kayak, junto com Johan Slager, o baixista Bert Veldkamp, o vocalista John (Hans) Philippo e o baterista Roger Wollaert. Essa formação fez um número limitado de shows, até foi à Itália para uma aparição promocional na TV, mas ficou claro que os problemas financeiros entre a Kayak e o empresário Frits Hirschland eram um fardo demais para o grupo continuar. A banda e Hirschland se separaram e por vários motivos foi decidido abandonar o nome Kayak e continuar como Europe. Eles gravaram um álbum (também chamado de "Europe"), mas em um ano o grupo se desintegrou. Todos os membros seguiram caminhos separados.

1982-1998: SILÊNCIO

Dezessete anos se passariam com apenas um sinal de vida da banda: em 1997 a Kayak se reuniu para um programa de TV chamado "Classic albums", que se concentrou no álbum "Royal bed bouncer", apresentando a formação que fez esse disco em 1975. Enquanto isso, todos os LPs originais foram relançados em CD, a maioria deles com faixas extras e lados B perdidos, alguns como compilações. Além da EMI e da Phonogram, uma nova gravadora especializada chamada Pseudonym Records cuidou do relançamento de diversos LPs.

No programa de TV ficou claro que Ton, Pim e Max estavam ocupados com gravações demo (de um projeto sem nome), mas isso infelizmente não atraiu muito interesse das grandes gravadoras. Parecia que a Kayak nunca mais voltaria.

1999-2000: CLOSE TO THE FIRE

Em 1999, Kayak foi chamada pela popular banda holandesa e frísia De Kast para ser sua convidada em um programa de TV chamado "De Vrienden van Amstel Live". Kayak, pela primeira vez em 17 anos, concorda em se apresentar ao vivo para um público. Ton Scherpenzeel, Max Werner, Bert Veldkamp e Johan Slager, juntamente com o substituto temporário de Pim Koopman, Marc Stoop (Pim, que vive parcialmente na Irlanda, não conseguiu chegar a tempo), fazem este show lendário no Café de Paap em Haia em novembro 1999 junto com membros da De Kast. Isso marcou o início da "segunda" vida da Kayak. As demos que aos poucos juntavam poeira no estúdio de Ton, voltaram à tona e chamaram a atenção de uma nova gravadora, chamada ProActs, projeto do qual a De Kast participou. E o que ninguém ousava esperar finalmente acontece: Kayak (desta vez com Ton, Pim, Bert, Max e o novo guitarrista Rob Winter) começa a trabalhar em um novo álbum, "Close to the fire".

Lançado em maio de 2000, "Close to the fire" teve uma recepção extremamente positiva, em parte porque o vocalista original Max Werner voltou a usar o microfone, atraindo fãs desde os primeiros anos. A velha magia, o fogo inspirador estava de volta. Kayak também voltou ao palco, desta vez como uma banda de seis integrantes. O ex-vocalista do Vandenberg, Bert Heerink, torna-se o segundo vocalista principal, dando a Max a oportunidade de compartilhar as responsabilidades de vocalista com outra pessoa e expandir suas ambições de percussão. Com Bert, Kayak também poderia tocar as músicas que Edward Reekers costumava cantar, como "Ruthless Queen" e "Merlin", para citar apenas algumas.

2000: A PARTIDA DE MAX

Infelizmente, graves problemas de saúde impedem Max de manter sua posição como vocalista por muito tempo e ele é forçado a deixar a banda no outono de 2000. Logo depois disso, fica claro que ele nunca teve a intenção de permanecer na banda por muito mais tempo do que aquela primeira turnê e teria desistido de qualquer maneira. Ele não foi realmente substituído, porque Bert Heerink já havia assumido algumas de suas funções vocais, mas um guitarrista e vocalista extra foi adicionado, Rob Vunderink. Rob tocou em bandas como The Hammer e Diesel - com Pim Koopman.

2001: ÁLBUM AO VIVO

O ano de 2001 vê o lançamento de dois novos álbuns da Kayak: "Chance for a LIVE time" e "Night vision". "Chance for a LIVE time" é o primeiro álbum ao vivo real que a Kayak já lançou ("Eyewitness" foi gravado ao vivo no estúdio, mas o público foi adicionado às faixas mais tarde). O álbum, gravado durante a turnê "Close to the fire" de 2000, reflete a nova energia e inspiração dentro da banda, que se mostra mais forte do que nunca após a saída repentina de Max Werner pouco antes do início da turnê e Bert Heerink ter que assumir liderar tarefas vocais. Logo após o lançamento de "Chance for a LIVE time" Kayak começa a trabalhar em seu décimo segundo álbum chamado "Night vision", que será lançado em novembro. Ao mesmo tempo, a banda começa a trabalhar em idéias para retrabalhar a suíte "Merlin" (do álbum de mesmo nome que foi originalmente lançado em 1981) em um álbum conceitual completo e uma turnê teatral que inclui uma orquestra real, planejada para 2003.

2002: TURNÊ NIGHT VISION

O ano de 2002 começa com a bem-sucedida turnê "Night vsion". Após a turnê, Ton, Pim e Irene se concentram em escrever e fazer arranjos para a nova ópera rock "Merlin", que se tornará o projeto mais exigente e pretensioso que Kayak já assumiu. Mas não apenas isso. Para tornar ainda mais exigente, no meio do ano a banda se depara com duas mudanças dramáticas. A primeira grande desvantagem é a divisão entre a gravadora e o promotor da turnê ProActs, o que significa que a Kayak tem que procurar uma nova gravadora para lançar o novo álbum que é considerado vital para o futuro da banda. O segundo golpe acontece quando, pouco antes do início das gravações, o guitarrista Rob Winter anuncia sua saída, pois sente cada vez mais dificuldade em conciliar seu trabalho com a Marco Borsato Band e a Kayak. O sucessor de Rob é Joost Vergoossen, que nos últimos anos tocou (entre outros) com a Ilse de Lange Band (com o ex-baixista da Kayak Theo de Jong).

Joost se junta ao grupo no outono de 2002 e pode começar imediatamente com sua contribuição musical para o novo álbum. Outra mudança notável na formação ocorre: para o álbum e a próxima turnê, que foi baseada na história de Merlin, e que seria apresentada em forma de ópera rock, Kayak precisava de outro cantor para cumprir o papel da feiticeira Morgan (adversária de Merlin). O vocalista Bert Heerink já fazia o papel de Merlin, enquanto o segundo vocalista e guitarrista Rob Vunderink foi reinventado como Mordred, o filho ilegítimo de Morgan e seu meio-irmão, o Rei Arthur. A busca por uma vocalista que pudesse desempenhar esse papel termina com sucesso quando Cindy Oudshoorn aceita a oferta. Cindy não era apenas uma cantora solo com alguns singles (em holandês) em seu nome, mas também trabalhou como vocalista de sessão, ao vivo e em estúdio, para bandas como K-Otic e Ruth Jacott. Mais uma vez, o elenco da Kayak está completo. E o show pode continuar – o que acontece. No segundo semestre de 2002, Kayak se concentra na gravação de sua obra-prima "Merlin: Bard of the unseen".

2003: MERLIN: BARD OF THE UNSEEN

Uma nova cantora, Monique van der Ster, começa a duplicar o papel de Cindy como Morgan LeFay em "Merlin: Bard of the unseen". Monique tem aparecido com a banda em shows regulares desde então, sempre que possível.

A ópera rock "Merlin: Bard of the unseen" leva a Kayak aos teatros holandeses e a turnê faz muito sucesso. Além do elenco já bastante numeroso, o show também inclui três dançarinos que ajudam a visualizar as lendas do mágico medieval e do rei Arthur. O destaque de 2003 é sem dúvida a interpretação de "Merlin" no Festival Tromp nas dunas holandesas perto de Ter Heijde aan Zee: a ópera rock é apresentada com uma orquestra sinfônica de grande escala, ao ar livre para um público entusiasmado de 7.000 pessoas. a participação dos vocalistas Bobby Kimball (Toto) e Petra Berger, nos seus papéis de Lancelot e Guinevere, torna este concerto ainda mais especial.

2004-2005: NOSTRADAMUS: THE FATE OF MAN

2004 começa com uma curta reprise de "Merlin", que já havia sido lançado em DVD, mas escrever e preparar a sequência teatral chamada "Nostradamus: The fate of man" ocupa a maior parte do ano.

"Nostradamus" deve subir ao palco em março de 2005. Devido ao fato de o elenco da segunda ópera rock da Kayak ser ainda mais elaborado que o de "Merlin", mais vocalistas precisam ser encontrados. Edward Reekers já estava substituindo Bert e Rob quando eles não puderam atuar em "Merlin", e agora é solicitado para um papel notável: ele não apenas canta, mas também é o narrador da história. O ex-vocalista do Kast, Syb van der Ploeg, também se junta ao projeto.

Pouco antes do início das gravações do CD, o baixista Bert Veldkamp deixa a Kayak porque a combinação de seus outros trabalhos com a banda é muito exigente. Como procurar um novo baixista para tocar durante as gravações leva muito tempo, Ton Scherpenzeel (sendo ele próprio baixista) decide tocar as partes do baixo no novo CD duplo.

Em 2005, Jan van Olffen se torna o novo baixista da Kayak. Além de Ton, Pim, Bert, Rob, Joost, Cindy, Monique, Edward, Jan e Syb há mais três dançarinos e cantores que se juntam à turnê: Marc Dollevoet, Marjolein Teepen e Marloes van Woggelum, que compõem o elenco total de "Nostradamus: The fate of man", nada menos que 13 pessoas. A nova ópera rock parece ser um esforço muito ousado e ambicioso da Kayak que deverá, de uma vez por todas, estabelecer o seu nome no teatro. Durante o show nem uma única música antiga é tocada: "Nostradamus", com quase duas horas de duração, ocupa a noite inteira. A turnê de 32 shows é, novamente, um sucesso, mas devido aos altos custos de produção parece ser inviável para a banda partir para uma represália em 2006.

Então surge outro plano para colocar a Kayak em funcionamento no ano novo. O cantor Bert Heerink decide que não quer esperar por esses acontecimentos: em dezembro de 2005 anuncia sua saída da banda, que teve que saber da novidade em seu site.

2006: KAIAKOUSTIC

A saída inesperada do vocalista Bert Heerink não tem consequências graves porque Edward Reekers retorna à banda após a colaboração bem-sucedida em "Nostradamus", e Cindy Oudshoorn se tornou um membro de pleno direito da Kayak.

Não há lançamento de novo álbum este ano. Após o súbito desaparecimento de "Nostradamus" - apesar da turnê bastante bem-sucedida, o risco financeiro de uma continuação do projeto era muito alto - a banda decidiu optar por uma pequena turnê.

No outono de 2006 dá-se o início da turnê "KAYAKoustic", que vai até o início de 2007. A intenção original da banda, um show quase acústico, é diluída pelo anúncio tardio: não há reservas de teatro suficientes para faça a turnê conforme planejado, então vários clubes terão que ser adicionados para fazer a turnê.

Eventualmente, é adotada uma abordagem semi-acústica, na qual um grande número de músicas antigas que raramente foram tocadas ao vivo antes, como "Daughter or son" ou "What’s in a name", foram transformadas para arranjos completamente novos.

Nos espetáculos de teatro a forte formação vocal é enfatizada: enquanto Ton Scherpenzeel toca piano de cauda, os guitarristas se atêm aos seus instrumentos acústicos, Pim aos seus pincéis e hotrods, e Jan van Olffen se destaca no contrabaixo. Alguns shows da turnê foram gravados para um CD que será lançado em 2007.

2007-2008: COMING UP FOR AIR

 

Poucos meses depois do último show do "KAYAKoustic", o álbum ao vivo dessa turnê é lançado em maio de 2007. Assim como a turnê, este lançamento é em pequena escala: o CD só pode ser encomendado diretamente através da loja online da Kayak. No resto do ano não há mais shows, pois a banda se concentra em escrever e gravar um novo álbum de estúdio, com lançamento previsto para o início de 2008: "Coming up for air", que também levará mais uma vez o grupo aos cinemas e clubes da Holanda. Desta vez não é uma ópera rock, como os dois últimos álbuns "Merlin" e "Nostradamus", mas sim um CD "normal" com quinze canções sem qualquer ligação conceptual.

O passeio também é marcado pelos 35 anos da Kayak. Em fevereiro de 1973, "Lyrics", o primeiro single da banda, foi lançado. No outono de 2008, um DVD ao vivo é gravado no Paradiso e, posteriormente, "The anniversary box", contendo o show do Paradiso, bem como uma coleção de faixas escolhidas pelos fãs, é lançado.

2009: LETTERS FROM UTOPIA

Em 2009 Kayak lança um novo álbum, nada menos que um 2CD com 19 músicas inéditas, intitulado "Letters from Utopia". A formação permaneceu inalterada desde 2005, o período mais longo na história da Kayak. No lançamento do álbum, pouco antes do início da turnê, Kayak anuncia que esta pode ser sua última turnê. A banda não dá razão para esta decisão, mas é evidente que está a tornar-se cada vez mais difícil organizar uma digressão em condições profissionais.

Tendo anunciado isso, Kayak também deixou claro que a banda não tinha a intenção de abandonar completamente a cena rock holandesa: eles prometeram continuar procurando outras maneiras de continuar. O verdadeiro motivo deste anúncio foi uma sugestão da gestão e do escritório de reservas da banda, para gerar mais interesse e atrair um público maior. Se a Kayak ainda decidisse continuar, provavelmente ninguém reclamaria.

Em 23 de novembro ocorre um desastre: o baterista Pim Koopman morre de ataque cardíaco no meio da turnê. O resto da turnê está, obviamente, cancelado. Kayak anuncia que a decisão de continuar a banda sem Pim será tomada no momento certo.

Em 2010, o "Pim Koopman tribute concert" acontece no salão Paradiso de Amsterdam, exatamente (exceto um dia) um ano após a morte de Pim. Kayak faz um set especial com artistas convidados ou membros de banda com quem Pim trabalhou no passado como produtor e compositor, como Pussycat, Diesel, The President, Jose e Caren Maywood. O lugar de Pim como baterista naquela noite é ocupado por Hans Eijkenaar. Algumas semanas após o show, a Kayak anuncia sua intenção de continuar como banda com Hans como sucessor de Pim na bateria. Um novo álbum está planejado para 2011.

2011: ANYWHERE BUT HERE

Em 2011 é lançado o DVD “Tribute concert” do concerto de Paradiso em homenagem a Pim. A banda trabalha em um novo álbum, que se chamará "Anywhere but here" e é - sem surpresa - dedicado a Pim Koopman. Hans não apenas ocupa o lugar de Pim atrás da bateria, mas também mixa o álbum. Em setembro o álbum é lançado, e de outubro a dezembro uma Kayak reenergizada embarca em uma turnê pelo clube.

Enquanto isso, também tendo deixado sua antiga gravadora e agência de reservas no ano anterior, a Kayak recuperou os direitos da maioria de seus lançamentos desde 1981 e abriu sua própria loja virtual.

2012-2013: 40 ANOS DE KAIAK, UMA “VIAGEM NO TEMPO”

Para comemorar seu 40º aniversário, Kayak embarca em uma turnê chamada "Journey through time". Devido aos seus muitos outros compromissos musicais, Hans Eijkenaar não estará disponível para toda a turnê. Durante estes concertos ele é substituído por Sjoerd Rutten. A banda lança um maxi-single especial com uma faixa inédita ("Symmetry", de 1971) e uma nova música "Cleopatra: The crown of Isis". São anunciados planos para uma nova e ambiciosa ópera rock sobre a vida da lendária rainha egípcia Cleópatra.

2014-2015: CLEOPATRA: THE CROWN OF ISIS

Após um período de mais de dois anos de preparação e gravação a nova ópera rock é finalmente lançada. O álbum duplo (o terceiro da banda em dez anos) é financiado em parte por uma campanha de crowdfunding. A Kayak permite que os fãs participem e invistam na nova produção e, em troca, os integrantes da banda se envolvem em ações especiais, como um show semi-acústico único para um público de 50 pessoas, a possibilidade de colocar o nome no encarte do encarte do álbum, ou receber o álbum em casa por Ton e Irene. O CD conta com vários vocalistas convidados: Martin van der Starre, Alexander van Breemen, Marjolein Teepen (que fez parte do elenco de "Nostradamus" em 2005) e a cantora grega Tatiana Manolidou.

Para surpresa de todos, os cantores Cindy Oudshoorn e Edward Reekers anunciam que deixarão a Kayak após o último show em 2014. A notícia chega apenas algumas semanas antes do lançamento e da próxima turnê do clube. Embora a decisão deles obviamente tenha um grande impacto no futuro da banda, Ton Scherpenzeel deixa claro que isso não significa que a Kayak também encerrará o dia, mas não menciona planos concretos para apresentar uma nova formação tão cedo.

No que diz respeito ao desenvolvimento de "Cleopatra: The crown of Isis" como um espetáculo para teatros ou eventos especiais no ano novo, não fará grande diferença: para os respectivos papéis de Cindy e Edward como Cleópatra e os Sicilianos, será necessário encontrar substitutos.

Em março de 2015, Kayak (Ton Scherpenzeel, Rob Vunderink, Joost Vergoossen, Jan van Olffen e Sjoerd Rutten, substituindo Hans Eijkenaar) e convidados (com Marjolein Teepen e Rolf Koster substituindo Cindy e Edward) apresentam a ópera rock em um evento especial externo no Ilha holandesa de Texel para uma multidão de 1.500 pessoas que suportam o frio e o vento para assistir e ouvir este show único. 2016: ANÚNCIO

Em setembro de 2016, Ton Scherpenzeel anuncia que está escrevendo e preparando um novo álbum da Kayak, previsto para 2017. Sendo o 17º esforço de estúdio da banda, o título provisório do álbum é "17". Não são fornecidos mais detalhes, exceto que as audições para um(s) novo(s) vocalista(s) estão em andamento e que as coisas parecem positivas.

2017: PREPARATIVOS

As gravações de "Seventeen" (como o novo álbum foi oficialmente intitulado) estão avançando bem, e em março Ton Scherpenzeel apresenta dois novos membros da banda. Seus nomes são o vocalista Bart Schwertmann e o guitarrista Marcel Singor.

Parece que ninguém da última formação retornará - exceto Ton, é claro. Isto significa a transformação mais radical na longa história da Kayak, um feito notável depois de tantos anos. Mais tarde, Ton explicaria que a renovação da banda era inevitável e a única maneira de continuar. Os nomes de outros músicos serão anunciados quando a formação ao vivo for confirmada.

Mais novidades surgem: Kayak encontra um novo empresário (Glassville Music) e a banda assina um contrato com a gravadora Inside Out, um grande player no campo do rock progressivo. Um pequeno triunfo, já que a Kayak não tem o apoio de uma gravadora oficial há muitos anos. Isso significa que o lançamento - originalmente previsto para 2017 - terá que ser adiado para o início de 2018.

Mais dois nomes completam a formação ao vivo da Kayak, que deverá embarcar em turnê em 2018. São eles o baixista Kristoffer Gildenlöw, de origem sueca, e o baterista Collin Leijenaar. Kris e Collin já haviam tocado juntos uma vez na banda de Neal Morse.

2018: SEVENTEEN

O novo álbum é lançado em 12 de janeiro de 2018 e recebe ótimas críticas na Holanda e, principalmente, no exterior. Não apenas a qualidade musical do álbum é mencionada, mas a banda também recebe créditos por sua incrível resiliência. Um crítico inglês escreve: "Kayak - mais rupturas do que a plataforma de gelo da Antártida e mais reviravoltas do que um bumerangue com saudades de casa".

O CD entra nas paradas de álbuns holandesas em 6º lugar, a posição mais alta de um disco da Kayak desde 1980. A versão em vinil de "Seventeen" ainda chega ao 1º lugar no Vinyl-top-33. A banda está de volta - com força total.

Pela primeira vez na história da banda, Kayak viaja para a Escandinávia para fazer shows de sucesso na Noruega e na Suécia.

No final de novembro, Kayak interrompe a colaboração com o baterista Collin Leijenaar (que, portanto, só tocou ao vivo com a banda - a bateria do álbum foi tocada por Lean Robbemont). Colin está sendo substituído por seu antecessor Hans Eijkenaar, que já tocou na banda de 2010 a 2013.

2019: ATAQUE CARDÍACO

Em outubro, enquanto a banda se preparava para embarcar em uma turnê européia de duas semanas com a banda sueca The Flower Kings, Ton Scherpenzeel sofre um ataque cardíaco. A turnê (que estava marcada para dezembro) está cancelada, assim como outros shows planejados para o início do verão (Night of the Prog e Loreley Festival, por exemplo).

2020: ÁLBUM AO VIVO

Em março de 2020 a Kayak lança "Live 2019" em edição limitada, disponível apenas no site de música Bandcamp e em lojas selecionadas. O álbum de 2 CDs, gravado durante a turnê do ano passado, recebeu ótimas críticas.

Abril de 2020 Ton Scherpenzeel anuncia sua recuperação e afirma que a banda começará a gravar um novo álbum em breve, embora não esteja exatamente claro quando seu lançamento está previsto. Como o mundo inteiro parou devido ao COVID-19 e nenhum show está planejado até o final do ano, a banda decidiu dedicar um tempo para trabalhar em um novo álbum de estúdio.

2021: OUT OF THIS WORLD

Como a pandemia ainda não permite grandes concertos, ainda não está prevista nenhuma digressão. No início de 2021 a banda anuncia seu 18º álbum de estúdio "Out of this world", com lançamento previsto para maio.

O álbum recebe críticas muito positivas. Infelizmente, a Covid ainda não permite que a banda saia em turnê e divulgue o álbum. No final do ano, Ton Scherpenzeel anuncia a última turnê da banda. "Foi uma ótima viagem, mas chegamos ao fim da linha. Prefiro parar muito cedo do que demorar muito".

Kayak fará seu último show em 21 de maio de 2022 em Oslo, meses antes de seu 50º aniversário oficial.

2022: TURNÊ DE DESPEDIDA

O dia 21 de maio marcou o fim da "Farewell tour", que apesar de dois shows cancelados no Reino Unido e do último show em Oslo ter sido cancelado devido a três casos de Covid na banda, foi um grande sucesso. Dois shows foram gravados para lançamento em DVD, previsto para ainda este ano.

O futuro da Kayak é muito incerto. Ton disse que, na sua forma atual, a banda não estará mais em turnê. Não excluiu a realização de novas gravações nem o regresso aos palcos para "projectos especiais", seja lá o que isso signifique.

Kayak is a Dutch rock band formed by Ton Scherpenzeel and Pim Koopman in Hilversum in 1972. In 1973, the debut album "See see the sun" was released, including three hit singles. Its popularity was mainly in the Netherlands, with the top hit "Ruthless Queen" reaching number 6 on the Dutch charts in March 1979. It disbanded in 1982 after releasing nine albums.

In 1999, the band was asked to perform on the TV show "De Vrienden van Amstel Live". After this performance, the band decided to reform, and released nine further studio albums and three live albums.

HISTORY

BEGGININGS

Kayak’s roots are in the Dutch town of Hilversum, where founding members and neighbourhood friends Ton Scherpenzeel (keyboards, bass guitar) and Pim Koopman (drums, guitars) played together in several bands like Balderdash (1967) and High Tide Formation (1970). Guitarist Johan Slager played in High Tide Formation's final line up until the group disbanded in 1971. That same year Ton, Pim and Johan began to record a number of demos (a project called Ten Ride Ticket) and occasionally played live (as Alta Quies). Around this time both Ton and Pim started studying at the Hilversum Music Academy, where fellow student Max Werner joined forces with Ton and Pim by lending his unique voice to their musical efforts. Ton’s main classical instrument was the double bass, Pim and Max both studied percussion. When bass player Cees van Leeuwen (replacing Frenchman Jean Michel Marion) completed the first line up, the group that was to become Kayak managed to get a recording contract with EMI - after being dismissed by Phonogram who had an initial interest in the band, even recorded some demos with the band, but in the end let go when Ton and Pim refused to record other material than their own.

1972-1974: LAUNCHED

Kayak was launched by EMI and manager Frits Hirschland as a new supergroup, although the individual members were hardly 20 years old, had little experience as a live band and basically had not proven anything in the music business other than having an original and stubborn mind of their own. The first two albums, "See see the sun" and "Kayak II" delivered three modest hits ("Lyrics", "Mammoth" and "Wintertime"), but more importantly made Kayak's name as a talented young band with a growing progressive following.

1974-1976: CHANGES

In 1974 bass player Cees van Leeuwen decided he couldn't combine his university studies with the hectic tour and recording schedule of the band, and left. He was replaced by Bert Veldkamp. In this lineup the band recorded its third album, "Royal bed bouncer", which generated another modest hit single, "Chance for a lifetime". If the first two albums showed an even balance between the two main writers of the band, Pim and Ton, "Royal bed bouncer" showed Scherpenzeel at a creative peak. The band kept on touring and by 1976 was an established top act on the Dutch and Belgian music scene. A row between manager Hirschland and EMI lead to the departure of the group from EMI. It turned to Phonogram, the same company that in 1971 had refused to sign the band. With LP number four, "The last encore", Pim Koopman found himself solidly back in the writer's chair with Ton. The first big setback came later that year, when Pim left the band. Bass player Bert Veldkamp also quit, so within two months the band lost its complete rhythm section and one of the group's main songwriters.

1977-1978: STARLIGHT DANCER

At the end of 1976 Pim and Bert were replaced by Charles Schouten and Theo de Jong. This line up recorded "Starlight dancer". The title track, one of the band's all-time classics, reached number 14 in the Dutch charts, and Kayak seemed to be back. The American release of the same name (a compilation of the Dutch LPs "The last encore" and "Starlight dancer") was even a minor success in the USA, with "Want you to be mine" peaking at 55 in the Billboard charts. Kayak was even voted "Most promising band of the year" by the influentual American music paper Record World. But as time went by, musical differences between the original and new members appeared to be unreconcilable, and within 18 months the band (or what was left of it) again had to find a new bass player and drummer. And not only that...

1978-1981: RUTHLESS QUEEN

What followed was a very chaotic year, in which the band’s break up often seemed near, because in spite of the possibility of an American tour and the long-awaited international breakthrough, lead vocalist Max Werner made it clear he wanted to withdraw as Kayak's frontman. Werner had always felt like a drummer, and had more or less happened to find himself trapped in the lead singer role because of his unique voice. When the drum chair became vacant, he told the others of his wish to become the band's new drummer, which meant that Kayak had to start looking for a new lead singer. All plans had to be discarded and the group basically had to start from scratch. Edward Reekers became the new vocalist. With him three "newcomers" joined the band: Peter Scherpenzeel (Ton's younger brother) signed on as the new bass player, while backing vocalists Irene Linders (Ton's wife and lyricist for many of his songs from then on) and Katherine Lapthorn were added to give the band a whole new identity. All these changes, and the release of the new album "Phantom of the night", meant a significant break with the past in more than one way - for many old fans this band had little to do with the original Kayak. But the "new" group suddenly and unexpectedly reached a bigger audience than ever before. "Ruthless Queen" was Kayak's first and only really major hit single (number 4 in the Dutch charts). The album even made it to number one, being awarded platinum for over 100,000 copies sold in Holland.

1981-1982: PERISCOPE LIFE

The next album, "Periscope life" (1980), was recorded in Los Angeles. It was similar in style, but lacked the big hit and surprise factor that made its predecessor such a phenomenal success. However, it still outsold the first five albums. With its next album, "Merlin" (1981), Kayak returned to its original progressive and symphonic rock roots, with a suite about the legendary medieval magician on side A. This album, together with "Royal bed bouncer", was generally considered to be Kayak's best work. With the decline of commercial success however, personal and musical struggles within the band surfaced. The desperate financial situation that manager Hirschland had led the band and its members into only made things worse.

While Max Werner celebrated a number one single as solo singer in Germany with "Rain in May", the band finally collapsed under its own weight. Kayak (now without the two female backing singers) still managed to produce one semi-live album, "Eyewitness". This LP contained three new songs, but mostly consisted of recordings that were done "live" in the studio, with only minor repairs and dubs added. The applause was overdubbed, something that became clear when later the CD version of the album was released: Ton Scherpenzeel explained in the liner notes that he had decided to have the album edited and re-released without the clapping and yelling audience, something that had always irritated him so much that he had never been able to listen to "Eyewitness" himself in its original form.

After what was in fact a break up Ton Scherpenzeel tried to make a new start with Kayak, together with Johan Slager, bass player Bert Veldkamp, vocalist John (Hans) Philippo and drummer Roger Wollaert. This line up played a limited number of concerts, even went to Italy for a promotional tv appearance, but it became clear that the financiel problems between Kayak and manager Frits Hirschland were too much of a burden for the group to go on. The band and Hirschland broke up and for various reasons it was decided to drop the name Kayak and continue as Europe. They made one album (also called "Europe"), but within a year the group desintegrated. All members went their own separate ways.

1982-1998: SILENCE

Seventeen years would go by with only one sign of life of the band: in 1997 Kayak reunited for a TV program called "Classic albums", that concentrated on the album "Royal bed bouncer", featuring the lineup that made this record in 1975. Meanwhile, all the original LP albums were re-released on CD, most of them with extra tracks and lost B-sides, some as compilations. Besides EMI and Phonogram, a new and specialized record company called Pseudonym Records took care of the re-release of several LPs.

In the TV program it became clear that Ton, Pim and Max had been busy with demo recordings (of an unnamed project), but this unfortunately didn't attract too much interest from the major record companies. It looked like Kayak would never return.

1999-2000: CLOSE TO THE FIRE

In 1999 Kayak is asked by popular Dutch and Frisian band De Kast to be its guest on a TV show called "De Vrienden van Amstel Live". Kayak, for the first time in 17 years, agree to perform live in front of an audience. Ton Scherpenzeel, Max Werner, Bert Veldkamp and Johan Slager, together with Pim Koopman's temporary replacement Marc Stoop (Pim, partly living in Ireland, couldn't make it in time), play this legendary gig in Café de Paap in The Hague in November 1999 together with members of De Kast. This marked the beginning of Kayak's "second" life. The demos that were slowly gathering dust in Ton's studio, surfaced again, and drew the attention of a new record label, called ProActs, a project in which De Kast participated. And what no one had dared to hope, finally happens: Kayak (this time with Ton, Pim, Bert, Max and new guitarist Rob Winter) begin working on a new album, "Close to the fire".

Released in May 2000, "Close to the fire" gets an extremely positive reception, partly because original singer Max Werner had again taken to the microphone, drawing fans from the early years. The old magic, the inspirational fire was back. Kayak also returned to the stage, this time as a six-piece band. Ex-Vandenberg singer Bert Heerink becomes the second lead vocalist, giving Max the opportunity to share the frontman responsibilities with somebody else and expand his percussion ambitions. With Bert, Kayak could also perform the songs that Edward Reekers used to sing, like "Ruthless Queen" and "Merlin", to name but a few.

2000: MAX DEPARTURE

Unfortunately, severe health problems keep Max from maintaining his position as lead singer very long and he is forced to leave the band in the autumn of 2000. Soon after that it becomes clear he had never intended to stay with the band much longer than that first tour and would have quit anyhow. He is not really replaced, because Bert Heerink had already taken over some of his vocal duties, but an extra guitarist and vocalist is added, Rob Vunderink. Rob had played in bands like The Hammer and Diesel - with Pim Koopman.

2001: LIVE ALBUM

The year 2001 sees the release of two new Kayak albums: "Chance for a LIVE time" and "Night vision". "Chance for a LIVE time" is the first real live album Kayak ever released ("Eyewitness" was recorded live in the studio, but the audience was added to the tracks later on). The album, recorded during the "Close to the fire"-tour 2000, reflects the new energy and inspiration within the band, that proves to be stronger than ever after Max Werner's sudden departure just before the tour started and Bert Heerink had to take over lead vocal duties. Shortly after the release of "Chance for a LIVE time" Kayak starts working on their twelfth album called "Night vision", which is released in November. At the same time the band begins working on ideas to rework the "Merlin" suite (from the album of the same name that was originally released in 1981) into a full concept album and a theatre tour that includes a real orchestra, planned for 2003.

2002: NIGHT VISION TOUR

The year 2002 startes off with the successful "Night vision" tour. After the tour Ton, Pim and Irene concentrate on writing and arranging for the new "Merlin" rock opera, which will become the most demanding and most pretentious project Kayak has ever taken on. But not just that. To make it even more demanding, halfway through the year the band is confronted with two dramatic changes. The first major drawback is the split within record company and tour promotor ProActs, which means that Kayak has to look for a new record company to release the new album which is considered to be vital for the future of the band. The second blow comes when shortly before the recordings begins, guitarist Rob Winter announces his departure, as he finds it increasingly difficult to combine his work with the Marco Borsato Band and Kayak. Rob's successor is found in Joost Vergoossen, who in recent years had played (among others) with the Ilse de Lange Band (with former Kayak bass played Theo de Jong). 

Joost joins the group in the autumn of 2002 and can start right away with his musical contribution to the new album. Another remarkable change in the line up takes place: for the album and upcoming tour, that was based on the story of Merlin, and that was going to be presented in the form of a rock opera, Kayak needed another singer to fulfill the role of the sorceress Morgan (Merlin's adversary). Leadsinger Bert Heerink already played the part of Merlin, while second vocalist and guitarist Rob Vunderink was reinvented as Mordred, the illegitimate son of Morgan and her halfbrother, King Arthur. The quest for a female vocalist that could perform that role ends successfully when Cindy Oudshoorn accepts the offer. Cindy had not only been a solo singer with a few singles (in Dutch) on her name, but had also worked as a session vocalist, live and in the studio, for acts like K-Otic and Ruth Jacott. Once more, the cast for Kayak is complete. And the show can go on - which it does. The second half of 2002 Kayak concentrates on recording their magnum opus "Merlin: Bard of the unseen".

2003: MERLIN: BARD OF THE UNSEEN

A new singer, Monique van der Ster, starts doubling Cindy's role as Morgan LeFay in "Merlin: Bard of the unseen". Monique has appeared with the band at regular gigs since then, whenever possible.

The rock opera "Merlin: Bard of the unseen" takes Kayak to the Dutch theatres and the tour is very successful. In addition to the already quite large cast the show also includes three dancers that help visualizing the legends of the early medieval magician and king Arthur. The highlight of 2003 is without doubt the rendition of "Merlin" at the Tromp Festival in the Dutch dunes near Ter Heijde aan Zee: the rock opera is performed with a full scale symphony orchestra, in open air for an enthousiastic audience of 7000. The participation of vocalists Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Petra Berger, in their roles of Lancelot and Guinevere, makes this concert even more special.

2004-2005: NOSTRADAMUS: THE FATE OF MAN

2004 starts with a short reprise of "Merlin", which had been released on DVD by then, but writing and preparing the theatrical sequence called "Nostradamus: The fate of man" takes up most of the year.

"Nostradamus" is meant to hit the stage in March 2005. Because of the fact that the cast of Kayak's second rock opera is even more elaborate than "Merlin"'s, more vocalists have to be found. Edward Reekers had already been replacing both Bert and Rob when they were unable to perform in "Merlin", and is now asked for a remarkable role: not only does he sing, but he is the narrator of the story as well. Former Kast-singer Syb van der Ploeg also joins the project.

Shortly before the CD recordings begin, bass player Bert Veldkamp leaves Kayak as the combination of his other work with the band is too demanding. Since looking for a new bass player to play during the recordings takes too much time, Ton Scherpenzeel (being a bass player himself) decides to play the bass parts on the new double-CD.

In 2005 Jan van Olffen becomes Kayak's new bass player. Besides Ton, Pim, Bert, Rob, Joost, Cindy, Monique, Edward, Jan and Syb there are another three dancers and singers that join the tour: Marc Dollevoet, Marjolein Teepen en Marloes van Woggelum, which makes the total cast of "Nostradamus: The fate of man" no less than 13 people. The new rock opera appears to be a most daring and ambitious effort by Kayak that should, once and for all, establish their name in the theatre. During the show not even a single older song is played: "Nostradamus", with its length of almost two hours, takes up the complete night. The 32 concerts tour is, again, successful, but because of high production costs it appears to be unfeasible for the band to go for a reprisal in 2006.

Then another plan emerges to get Kayak going in the new year. Singer Bert Heerink decides he does not want to wait for these developments: in december 2005 he announces his departure from the band, who had to learn the news from his website.

2006: KAYAKOUSTIC

Singer Bert Heerink's unexpected departure has no serious consequences because Edward Reekers returns to the band after the succesful collaboration on "Nostradamus", and Cindy Oudshoorn has become a full-fledged Kayak member.

There is no new album release this year. After the sudden demise of "Nostradamus" - despite the quite successful tour, the financial risk of a continuation of the project was too high - the band decide to opt for a small tour.

In the fall of 2006 there is the start of the "KAYAKoustic" tour, which runs until the beginning of 2007. The band's original intent, an almost acoustical show, is watered down because of the late announcement: there are not enough theatre bookings to do the tour as planned, so a number of clubs has to be added to do the tour.

Eventually, a semi-acoustical approach is adopted, in which a great number of old songs that have rarely been played live before, like "Daughter or son" or "What’s in a name", were transformed by completely new arrangements.

In the theatre shows the strong vocal line up is emphasized: while Ton Scherpenzeel plays the grand piano, the guitarists stick to their acoustical instruments, Pim to his brushes and hotrods, and Jan van Olffen excels on double bass. Some of the shows of the tour have been recorded for a CD that is meant to be released in 2007.

2007-2008: COMING UP FOR AIR

 

A few months after the last "KAYAKoustic" concert the live album from that tour is released in May 2007. Just like the tour this release is on a small scale: the CD can only be ordered directly through Kayak's internet web shop. The rest of the year there are no more gigs, as the band concentrates on writing and recording a new studio album, planned for an early 2008 release: "Coming up for air", that will also once again take the group to the theatres and clubs of Holland. No rock opera this time, like the last two albums "Merlin" and "Nostradamus", but a "regular" CD with fifteen songs without any conceptual connection.

The tour is also marked by the 35th anniversary of Kayak. In February 1973 "Lyrics", the bands first single, was released. In the autumn of 2008 a live DVD is recorded in Paradiso, and subsequently "The anniversary box", containing the Paradiso concert as well as a collection of fan chosen tracks is released.

2009: LETTERS FROM UTOPIA

In 2009 Kayak releases a new album, a 2CD no less with 19 new songs, entitled "Letters from Utopia". The line up had remained unchanged since 2005, the longest period in Kayak history. At the release of the album, shortly before the beginning of the tour, Kayak announces that it might just be their last tour. The band does not give a reason for this decision, but it is apparent that it is becoming increasingly difficult to set up a tour under professional conditions.

Having announced this, Kayak also made it clear that the band did not have the intention to quit the Dutch rock scene altogether though: they promised to keep on looking for other ways to continue. The true reason for this announcement was a suggestion by the band's management and booking office, to generate more interest and draw a bigger crowd. If Kayak would then still decide to continue, probably no one would complain.

On November 23rd disaster strikes: drummer Pim Koopman dies of a heart attack in the middle of the tour. The rest of the tour is, of course, cancelled. Kayak anncounces that the decision about continueing the band without Pim, will be taken when the time is right.

In 2010 the "Pim Koopman tribute concert" takes place in the Amsterdam Paradiso hall, exactly (save one day) a year after Pim’s passing. Kayak plays a special set with guest artists or band members that Pim had worked with in the past as a producer and songwriter, like Pussycat, Diesel, The President, Jose, and Caren Maywood. Pim’s place as a drummer that night is taken by Hans Eijkenaar. A few weeks after the concert Kayak announces their intent to continue as a band with Hans as Pim's successor on drums. A new album is planned for 2011.

2011: ANYWHERE BUT HERE

In 2011 the "Tribute concert" DVD of the Paradiso concert in honour of Pim is released. The band works on a new album, that will be entitled "Anywhere but here" and is - no surprise - dedicated to Pim Koopman. Hans not only takes Pim's place behind the drumkit, but also mixes the album. In September the album is released, and from October to December a re-energized Kayak embarks on a club tour.

Meanwhile, also having left their former label and bookings agency the year before, Kayak regain the rights to most of their releases since 1981 and set up their own webshop.

2012-2013: 40 YEARS KAYAK, A "JOURNEY THROUGH TIME"

To celebrate their 40th anniversary Kayak embarks on a club tour called "Journey through time". Due to his many other musical commitments, Hans Eijkenaar is not available for the whole tour. During these concerts he is replaced by Sjoerd Rutten. The band releases a special maxi-single with a previously unreleased track ("Symmetry", dating back from 1971) and a new song "Cleopatra: The crown of Isis". Plans are anounced for a new, ambitious rock opera about the life of the legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra.

2014-2015: CLEOPATRA: THE CROWN OF ISIS

After a period of over two years preparing and recording the new rock opera is finally released. The double album (the band's third within ten years time!) is financed partly by a crowdfunding campaign. Kayak allows fans to participate and invest in the new production, and in return band members are involved in special actions, like a unique semi-acoustic concert for an audience of 50, the possibility to get one's name in the liner notes of the album booklet, or getting the album delivered at home by Ton and Irene. The CD features several guest vocalists: Martin van der Starre, Alexander van Breemen, Marjolein Teepen (who had been part of the "Nostradamus"-cast in 2005) and Greek singer Tatiana Manolidou.

To everyone's suprise singers Cindy Oudshoorn and Edward Reekers announce that they will leave Kayak after the last gig in 2014. The news comes only a few weeks before the release and upcoming club tour. Though their decision will obviously have quite an impact on the band's future, Ton Scherpenzeel makes it clear that it does not mean Kayak will call it a day as well, but mentions no concrete plans to present a new line up any time soon.

In regards to developing "Cleopatra: The crown of Isis" as a spectacle to theaters or special events in the new year it will not make a big difference: for Cindy and Edward's respective roles as Cleopatra and the Sicilian replacements will have to be found.

In March 2015 Kayak (Ton Scherpenzeel, Rob Vunderink, Joost Vergoossen, Jan van Olffen and Sjoerd Rutten, replacing Hans Eijkenaar) and guests (with Marjolein Teepen and Rolf Koster replacing Cindy and Edward) perform the rock opera at a special outside event on the Dutch island of Texel for a crowd of 1500 people that endure the cold and windy weather to watch and listen to this unique show. The band and guests are joined by a regional choir and two dancers, and the story itself is enhanced by video images that were especially made for the show.

No further announcements have been made yet about the band's future plans. For more than 18 months it would remain silent.

2016: ANNOUNCEMENT

In September 2016 Ton Scherpenzeel announces, that he is writing and preparing a new Kayak's album, scheduled for 2017. Being the band's 17th studio effort, the album's working title is "17".  No more details are given, other than that auditions for a new vocalist(s) are underway and that things are looking positive.

2017: PREPARATIONS

The recordings of "Seventeen" (as the new album has now officially been titled) are advancing well, and in March Ton Scherpenzeel introduces two new band members. Their names are singer Bart Schwertmann and guitarist Marcel Singor.

It appears that no one of the latest line up will return- except for Ton, of course. This means the most radical transformation in Kayak's long history, quite a remarkable feat after so many years. Later Ton would explain that renewal of the band was unavoidable and the only way to keep going. Other musician's names will be announced when the live line up is confirmed. 

More news emerges: Kayak finds a new management (Glassville Music) and the band signs a deal with record company Inside Out, a big player on the progrock-field. A small triumph indeed, as Kayak hasn't had the support of an official label for many years. It means that the release - originally intended for 2017 - will have to be postponed to early 2018.

Two more names complete Kayak's live line up, that is expected to embark on a tour in 2018. They are bassplayer Kristoffer Gildenlöw, from Swedish origin, and drummer Collin Leijenaar. Kris and Collin had already played together once before in Neal Morse's band.

2018: SEVENTEEN

The new album is released on January 12th 2018, and gets raving reviews from Holland and, especially, abroad. Not only the album's musical quality is mentioned, but the band also get credits because of their incredible resilience. An English critic writes: "Kayak - more break ups than the Antarctic ice shelf and more comebacks than a homesick boomerang".

The CD enters the Dutch album charts at number 6, the highest position of a Kayak record since 1980. The vinyl version of "Seventeen" even lands at the number 1 spot of the Vinyl-top-33. The band is back - with a vengeance.

For the first time in the band's history Kayak travel to Scandinavie to play succesful concerts in Norway and Sweden.

By the end of November Kayak discontinues the collobaration with drummer Collin Leijenaar (who therefore only played live with the band - the drums on the album were played by Lean Robbemont). Colin is being replaced by his predecessor Hans Eijkenaar, who had already played in the band from 2010 till 2013.

2019: HEART ATTACK

In October, as the band are preparing to embark on a two week European tour with Swedish progband The Flower Kings, Ton Scherpenzeel suffers a heart attack. The tour (that was scheduled for December) is cancelled, as well as other planned shows in the early summer (Night of the Prog and Loreley Festival, for instance). 

The recordings for the follow up to "Seventeen" are delayed until further notice. Once again the future of the band seems uncertain. 

2020: LIVE ALBUM

In March 2020 Kayak release "Live 2019" in limited edition, available only through the music site Bandcamp and selected stores. The 2CD album, recorded during last year's tour, gets raving reviews.

April 2020 Ton Scherpenzeel announces his recovery, and states that the band will start recording a new album soon, although it is not exactly clear when it is scheduled for release. As the whole world has come to a stand still due to COVID-19 and no concerts are planned anyway till the end of the year, the band decided to take their time to work on a new studio album.

2021: OUT OF THIS WORLD

As the pandemic still does not allow for any major concerts, no tour is being planned yet. In the beginning of 2021 the band announces their 18th studio album "Out of this world", planned for release in May.

The album receives very positive reviews. Unfortunately, Covid still does not allow the band to go on tour and promote the album. At the end of the year, Ton Scherpenzeel announces the band's final tour. "It's been a great ride, but we've come to the end of the line. I'd rather stop too early than going on too long".

Kayak will play its last show on May 21st 2022 in Oslo, months before their official 50th anniversary.

2022: FAREWELL TOUR

May 21 marked the end of the "Farewell tour", that despite two  cancelled gigs in the UK and the last show in Oslo being cancelled due to three Covid cases in the band, was a great succes. Two shows were recorded for a DVD release, that is expected later this year.

The future of Kayak is very uncertain. Ton has said that, in its current form, the band will no longer be touring. He did not exclude the making of new recordings nor a return to the stage for "special projects", whatever that may mean.
