Les Variations (Hard Rock {França})

Les Variations foi uma banda de rock francesa dos anos 60 e 70 que cantava em inglês e era conhecida por sua música baseada em guitarra rock. Muitas vezes, suas músicas e composições continham dicas de melodias norte-africanas e sefarditas judaicas, como as canções hebraicas da juventude dos membros da banda. Três dos quatro membros originais eram judeus marroquinos. Joe Leb assumia os vocais, Marc Tobaly tocava guitarra e Isaac “Jacky” Bitton e pegava na bateria. O quarto membro, Jacques "Petit Pois" Grande, que tocou baixo, é de herança italiana. Les Variations was a French rock band from the 60s and 70s who sang in English and was known for its guitar-rock music. Often their songs and compositions contained hints of North African and Sephardic Jewish melodies, such as the Hebrew songs of the band members' youth. Three of the four original members were Moroccan Jews. Joe Leb took over vocals, Marc Tobaly played guitar and Isaac "Jacky" Bitton and picked up the drums. The fourth member, Jacques "Petit Pois" Grande, who played bass, is of Italian heritage. In 1971, Leb was briefly replaced by the French singer Michel Chevalier. In 1975, Leb was later replaced by the Tunisian Robert Fitoussi.

Les Variations was formed in 1966 by Marc Tobaly's older brother, Alain, who became the band's manager. That year they began touring Europe as a great live performance band, singing English songs from their favorite artists such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Rolling Stones, and in 1967 they started their career in Denmark with launch of "Spics & Spack". Returning to France in 1969, they signed with France's EMI/Pathé Records and forged a successful recording relationship. Les Variations was the first and certainly one of France's best-known rock groups, largely due to its commercial successes, show and television performances, its incomparable media and press coverage, and its unique position as the first French rock band touring across America to sign with an American label and eventually pioneered a new rock style throughout its existence for a decade.

Between 1969 and 1973, they released most of their albums on Pathé Records. His early recordings often imitated traits of the Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin.

In 1972, Alain Tobably formed a partnership with Doug Yeager and Charles Benanty of Applewood Productions in New York, and the band began the second phase of their touring and recording career in the United States. Curiously, her only French recording, "Je suis jus un rock and roll", produced by Doug Yeager and the band and supported by the soul sisters Angel & Sybil, was recorded at Cincinnati's 5th Floor Recording Studios and became their biggest hit always reaching number 7 on the French pop charts. In 1973, his popular album "Take it or leave it" was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis with producer Don Nix.

In 1974, Les Variations became the first French rock band to sign with an American label, Buddah Records, creating a more exotic and unique style, reminiscent of its North African roots. His pioneering introduction of sounds and styles from his Moroccan legacies was exemplified in the albums "Moroccan Roll" (produced by Ralph Moss) and "Cafe de Paris" (produced by Lewis Merenstein and Michael Wendroff), which influenced rock bands in America, Europe and Africa for the next generations. During the recording and subsequent to the tour of these albums of Buddah, the band added the tecladista / singer North American Jim Morris; and for the next album (Cafe de Paris) and their tours, they added French/Tunisian/singer/guitarist/songwriter Robert Fitoussi and the main French / Tunisian Arabian violinist Maurice Meimoun.

This 1975 album reached the Billboard Top 200 in the United States, while the single "Superman, Superman" reached number 36 in the USA. During this period from 1974-1975, they became the first French rock band to head the famous Olympia Theater in Paris; and the only French band to play on the American concert show Midnight Special and the American national radio concert King Biscuit Flower Hour.

In the summer of 1975, following the band's US national tour in support of their album, Robert Fitoussi chose to expand his solo career as F.R. David. Jacques Grande and Maurice Meimoun also left the band at the time. Les Variations was remodeled in his home and Cincinnati studio with Tobaly, Bitton and Morris and with the addition of American singer Carl Storie and bassist/singer Albritton McClain.

Unfortunately, as they finally achieved measurable success in America with their great tours and successes, Les Variations made their last show at the Philadelphia Music Academy on December 7, 1975 and separated two weeks later on December 21, 1975.

Throughout her career, Les Variations became the first French rock band to tour Europe, Africa and America. Throughout their ten years on the road, they toured with many great acts of the time, including: Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Kiss, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Yeah, The Guess Who, Like, Queen, Uriah Heep, Rush, Kraftwerk, and Aerosmith, to name a few.
