Kaseke [Касеке] (Progressive Jazz Rock/Fusion {Estônia})

O mais notável dos conjuntos instrumentais de fusion vindos de Tallinn foi formado em 1981 com Peeter Malkov na flauta, Ain Varts na guitarra, Riho Sibul também tocando guitarra, Tõnu Naisoo nos teclados, Print Kuulberg no baixo e Andrus Waht na bateria.

O embrião da banda Kaseke pode ser considerado o grupo de punk rock Propeller (Пропеллер), criado em 1976. A Propeller foi uma das primeiras bandas de punk rock formadas na República Socialista Soviética da Estônia, que ainda era subordinada à União Soviética. A banda alcançou grande notoriedade em 22 de setembro de 1980, quando foi convidada por trabalhadores da Eesti Rahvusringhääling para fazer um show no intervalo do Kadriorg Stadium, em Tallinn, durante uma partida de futebol e após o jogo.

Depois de se apresentar para uma multidão de aproximadamente 7.000 pessoas durante o show do intervalo, as autoridades soviéticas proibiram a banda de fazer o show após o fim do jogo, instigando um tumulto que logo varreu Tallinn. Como a banda foi acusada de ser a catalisadora que desencadeou os tumultos, as autoridades forçaram a Propeller a se separar logo depois e todas as gravações mantidas pelo Eesti Raadio foram destruídas. Os membros da banda, no entanto, mantiveram as gravações originais de 1980 e, em 1995, estas gravações foram lançadas pela Fugata Ltd.

Nesta época, o tecladista Tõnu Naisoo é substituído por Mart Metsala.

Em 1981, a banda lança o seu primeiro single: "Sõnum" ("Mensagem"). As obras da Kaseke de 1982 a 1983 foram preservadas em um disco chamado "Põletus" ("Queimando"), sobre o qual alguns documentários foram filmados. Juntamente com as obras compostas pelos membros a banda, o álbum apresenta também composições de Margus Kappel (da Rock Hotel) e Erki-Sven Tyyur (da In Spe).

Em 1983 e 1984, a Kaseke foi apontada como a melhor banda no Tartu Music Days, de Tartu. Em 1984, Naisoo retornou ao grupo, mas ainda neste ano a Kaseke viria a se separar.

Varts e Kuulberg continuaram suas atividades musicais em 1986 na banda T Class, se apresentando no Tartu Music Days, com Riho Sibul (vocal), Varts (guitarra), Kuulberg (bass) e Andrus Kerstenbek (bateria).

Varts participou no grupo In Spe durante um curto período. Riho Sibul juntou-se à Ultima Thule. Metsala também trabalhou na In Spe e na VSP Projekt, mas não chegou a participar das gravações do álbum.

Em 2000, o selo Boheme Music (BMR) reuniu as gravações do single e do LP em um único CD, intitulado "Põletus sõnum" ("Mensagem em chamas"). Para os amantes de fusion é uma obrigação.

The most notable of the instrumental fusion ensembles to hail from Tallinn was formed in 1981 with Peeter Malkov on flute, Ain Varts on guitar, Riho Sibul also playing guitar, Tõnu Naisoo on keyboards, Print Kuulberg on bass and Andrus Waht on drums.

The embryo of the Kaseke band can be considered the punk rock group Propeller (Пропеллер), created in 1976. Propeller was one of the first punk rock bands formed in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was still subordinate to the Soviet Union. The band achieved great notoriety on 22 September 1980 when they were invited by workers of Eesti Rahvusringhääling to play a half-time show at Kadriorg Stadium in Tallinn during a football match and after the game.

After performing to a crowd of approximately 7,000 during the halftime show, Soviet authorities banned the band from playing the show after the game ended, instigating a riot that soon swept through Tallinn. As the band was accused of being the catalyst that sparked the riots, authorities forced Propeller to disband soon after and all recordings held by Eesti Raadio were destroyed. The band members, however, kept the original 1980 recordings, and in 1995 these recordings were released by Fugata Ltd.

Then, along with some members of the Ruja band, the guys quickly reformed as Kaseke and released an EP in 1981, and started to perform at various music festivals. In the same year, Kaseke received the main prize at Tartu Music Days in Tartu and an award at the republican show of vocal and instrumental ensembles. At this time, keyboardist Tõnu Naisoo is replaced by Mart Metsala.

In 1981, the band released their first single: "Sõnum" ("Message"). Kaseke's works from 1982 to 1983 were preserved on a disk called "Põletus" ("Burning"), on which some documentaries were filmed. Alongside works composed by the band members, the album also features compositions by Margus Kappel (of Rock Hotel) and Erki-Sven Tyyur (of In Spe).

In 1983 and 1984, Kaseke was named the best band at Tartu's Tartu Music Days. In 1984, Naisoo returned to the group, but this year Kaseke would break up.

Varts and Kuulberg continued their musical activities in 1986 in the band T Class, performing at Tartu Music Days, with Riho Sibul (vocal), Varts (guitar), Kuulberg (bass) and Andrus Kerstenbek (drums).

Varts participated in the group In Spe for a short period. Riho Sibul joined Ultima Thule. Metsala also worked at In Spe and VSP Projekt, but did not participate in the recording of the album.

In 2000, the Boheme Music (BMR) label combined the single and LP recordings into a single CD, entitled "Põletus sõnum" ("Burning message"). For fusion lovers it's a must.
