Midwinter - The waters of sweet sorrow - 1973 (Progressive Folk Rock {UK})

Esses gentis trovadores, precursores da banda de folk rock Stone Angel, formaram-se acidentalmente quando, em 1972, os guitarristas Paul Corrick e Ken Saul se reuniram para ensaiar um show para uma festa de Natal do clube folk de Great Yarmouth. Eles pediram à cantora Jill Child para participar e os três logo se tornaram uma formação unida com um amor mútuo por todas as coisas folclóricas. Eles se apresentaram em clubes e festivais por alguns anos e, em 1973, haviam acumulado material suficiente para gravar uma fita demo. Depois de um tempo, no entanto, Gill decidiu sair e a banda terminou após um concerto de despedida em 1974.

Os guitarristas Corrick e Saul formaram a Stone Angel junto com alguns músicos convidados que haviam participado da demo, o percussionista Mick Burroughers e o baixista Dick Cadbury. Vinte anos depois, o guitarrista Saul remexia em seu sótão e se deparou com as fitas master da antiga demo da Midwinter: com o material preservado, o único álbum da banda foi lançado pela primeira vez em 1993 pelo selo inglês Kissing Spell.

Intitulado "The waters of sweet sorrow" ("As águas da doce tristeza") o CD é composto de folks frágeis e sonhadores, cheias de maravilhas místicas, com ênfase nos vocais etéreos de Gill Child. Possui uma variedade de instrumentos elétricos e particularmente acústicos, como harpa, recorder (flauta de bico), auto-harpa, dulcimer, banjo, violão e violino, entre outros. Não há bateria, então o som é suave e gentil, e a atmosfera realmente rústica: é tão lembrada pelo 'velho passado da Inglaterra' que alguém disse que soou como se o álbum tivesse sido feito em 1650. No geral, apresenta algumas bom começo dos anos 70, hippy-ish psych folk na tradição de Trees, Mellow Candle, início da Clannad e The Pentangle.

These gentle troubadours, precursors of folk-rock band Stone Angel, almost formed by accident when, in 1972, guitarists Paul Corrick and Ken Saul got together to rehearse a gig for a Great Yarmouth folk club Christmas party. They asked singer Jill Child to join in and the three soon became a close-knit formation with a mutual love for all things folk. They performed at clubs and festivals for a couple of years and by 1973, had accumulated enough material to record a demo tape. After a while, however, Gill decided to quit and the band broke up following a farewell concert in 1974.

Guitarists Corrick and Saul then went on to form Stone Angel alongwith a couple of guest musicians who had participated in the demo, namely percussionist Mick Burroughers and bassist Dick Cadbury. Twenty years later, guitarist Saul was rummaging in his attic and chanced upon the master tapes of Midwinter's old demo: with the preserved material, the band's only album was released for the first time in 1993 by English label Kissing Spell.

Titled "The waters of sweet sorrow", the CD is made up of fragile, dreamy folk full of mystical wonder with an emphasis on the ethereal vocals of Gill Child. It features an assortment of electric and particularly acoustic instruments such as Jews harp, recorder, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, acoustic guitar and violin among others. There are no drums, so the sound is soft and gentle, and the asmosphere truly rustic: it is so redolent of 'old England past' that someone once said it sounded as if the album had been done in 1650. Overall, it features some nice early 70's, hippy-ish psych folk in the tradition of Trees, Mellow Candle, early Clannad and The Pentangle.
