Anaconda - Sympathy for the madman - 1969 (Psychedelic/Progresive Rock {UK})

Anaconda foi uma banda formada por Miguel Sergides no final de 1969 logo após a separação de sua lendária banda psicodélica Arcadium (banda da casa no The Middle Earth Club). O violinista e guitarrista Clive lembra que depois de passar os três anos anteriores em bandas de R&B ele respondeu a um anúncio no Melody Maker procurando músicos para se juntarem a uma "banda acústica progressiva" e se encontrou com Miguel e seu grupo como resultado. Quando eles se separaram, ele se juntou a The Passions em 1977, uma soberba banda punk/post punk que fez sucesso com a maravilhosa "I'm in love with a German film star". No final de 1981, farto da cena musical profissional, Clive se estabeleceu em trabalhos ocasionais e continuou tocando em bandas semi-profissionais (The Maidavailables, The Boogie Brothers Blues Band, The Barflies, 52-Pickup, Pigeons from Hell). Ele continua tocando até hoje.

Miguel Sergides garantiu a Clive e ao colega baixista Paul Hanna um show de uma semana tocando no palco do The Duchess Theatre no West End de Londres em 1970, em um musical chamado "Isabel's a Jezebel" do compositor Galt McDermot ("Hair") no qual Miguel era um membro do elenco.

O baterista da primeira banda de Clive (na escola) foi Martin Lamble, que mais tarde se juntou à Fairport Convention, em 1967. Depois de gravar três álbuns com eles, ele morreu tragicamente em um acidente de viação. Hugh Murphy morreu em 1998, com apenas 52 anos.

Anaconda was a band formed by Miguel Sergides in late 1969 shortly after the split from his legendary psychedelic band Arcadium (house band at The Middle Earth Club). Violinist and guitarist Clive recalls that after spending the previous three years in R&B bands he responded to an ad in Melody Maker looking for musicians to join an "acoustic - progressive band" and met with Miguel and his group as a result. Thus was born Anaconda. The songs were recorded shortly after the formation of Anaconda, in a session in the apartment of South African hit-maker John Kongos. Only a 10' acetate was cut from that live session and then misplaced, eventually appearing in 2019. Miguel doesn't remember the recordings and had forgotten the acetate was made. Anaconda played very few informal gigs, but the band had a manager, Mike Noble, who also managed the young Joan Armatrading. Noble thought that Anaconda might have the potential to rival Curved Air, which had recently released the critically and commercially successful "Air conditioning" and was proving a major draw on the live circuit.

They then approached The Shel Talmy Organization and were signed by Pye Studios with producer Hugh Murphy, who later worked with Stealers Wheel and Gerry Rafferty. 12 new tracks were recorded with musicians from The Herd, Blue Mink and Terri Quaye, sister of Caleb and Finley. However, disaster struck when Talmy was taken back to her sick mother's bedside in Canada, the sessions were abruptly canceled and the recordings scrapped. Unfortunately, there are no surviving tapes. This ended Anaconda's brief existence. Leaving only a recorded legacy of these 5 amazing progressive folk tracks, thought to have been lost forever.

Alistair and Clive then teamed up with singer-songwriter Andy Rae to form Foxton Flight with American bassist Greg Pennington (formerly of Springfield Revival) in 1973/74. They began recording with musical genius Keith Relf (ex-Yardbirds and Renaissance's brilliant Mk 1 lineup). These sessions were suddenly cut short by Relf's death by electrocution in his home studio. Once again, no recordings have survived.

Miguel continued on to acting and on stage, then left for Australia, forming the excellent Savanna Silver Band that he remembers as a highlight of his musical career. Fusing funk and disco into progressively structured extended tracks, the band released a classic LP in Australia in 1977. It was released twice with different covers and track orders in the same year.

Clive then joined The 101'ers with Joe Strummer (pre-The Clash) and played over 160 shows with them. When they broke up, he joined The Passions in 1977, a superb punk/post punk band that had a hit with the wonderful "I'm in love with a German film star". In late 1981, fed up with the professional music scene, Clive settled into occasional work and continued playing in semi-professional bands (The Maidavailables, The Boogie Brothers Blues Band, The Barflies, 52-Pickup, Pigeons from Hell). He continues to play to this day.

Miguel Sergides secured Clive and fellow bassist Paul Hanna a week-long gig playing the stage at The Duchess Theater in London's West End in 1970, in a musical called "Isabel's a Jezebel" by composer Galt McDermot ("Hair") at which Miguel was a cast member.

The drummer for Clive's first band (in school) was Martin Lamble, who later joined the Fairport Convention in 1967. After recording three albums with them, he tragically died in a car accident. Hugh Murphy died in 1998, aged just 52.
