HISTÓRIA 

DÉCADA DE 1970 

O primeiro núcleo da banda é formado em Roma a partir da parceria de três ex-integrantes do grupo beat I Lombrichi com o cantor Gianni Mereu, depois substituído por Sandro Falbo da Le Rivelazioni e, finalmente, por Pino Ballarini de Pescara que veio para Roma para tocar com I Poema.

Originalmente, a banda era formada por Gino Campoli (bateria), Paol (baixo), Maurizio (guitarra rítmica) e Leonardo Antonucci (guitarra solo). O primeiro a deixar a banda foi Gino Campoli que foi substituído por ninguém menos que Stefano D'Orazio antes da dissolução.

Em 1971, o grupo participou do Festival di Musica d'Avanguardia e di Nuove Tendenze, ganhando um contrato com a RCA italiana para o qual gravou o álbum de estréia "La Bibbia". A banda mostra seu tamanho especialmente em concerto, por isso o disco é gravado em "direto", e é um hard rock com algumas dicas sinfônicas tocadas com boa técnica mesmo que não seja particularmente original, traçando o som dos britânicos rocha dura . Por exemplo, a faixa "Sodoma e Gomorra" imita o estilo da Deep Purple. As letras são um tanto pretensiosas, pois são episódios retirados do Antigo Testamento, do "nada" ao "dilúvio", seguindo a idéia de álbum conceitual. O LP vinha acompanhado de um encarte redondo em forma de medalhão.

Após a publicação, o grupo retoma uma intensa atividade ao vivo participando também de alguns festivais, incluindo o Davoli Pope o organizado por Re Nudo - uma das principais revistas italianas dedicada à contracultura e à contrainformação, de cunho libertário, fundada em Milão em novembro de 1970 por um grupo de intelectuais e artistas, entre eles Andrea Valcarenghi. Em 1972, a banda lança seu segundo álbum, "Io come io", com um nível técnico superior, ainda que menos eficaz que o anterior. A obra é inspirada na filosofia hegeliana, e a primeira edição (7.000 exemplares) contém um medalhão de metal.

A banda em 1973 viu a entrada de Franco Di Sabatino nos teclados - vindo de uma recente experiência com Il Paese dei Balocchi -, que empurra o grupo para um estilo mais refinado com claras influências clássicas. Com a formação de cinco o álbum "Contaminazione" é gravado. Este é, por unanimidade, considerado o melhor trabalho da banda romana. O compositor argentino Luis Bacalov está envolvido na composição e arranjo da música, que teve recentemente duas experiências de rock sinfônico com a New Trolls e a Osanna. O resultado é um dos melhores discos de rock progressivo italiano. O título alude claramente à contaminação entre instrumentação de rock e orquestra sinfónica, com particular referência à música de Bach, e a letra centra-se na figura de um músico escocês do século 18 obcecado pelo grande compositor de quem se acredita ser o 21° filho reencarnado. O disco, com uma técnica impressionante, recebe uma boa resposta da crítica e do público, a ponto de ser feita uma versão em inglês para o mercado externo em 1975.

Além do bom número de discos vendidos, a popularidade da Il Rovescio foi determinada sobretudo pelo considerável sucesso de público de seus shows, atraídos pelo poderoso sistema de áudio e instrumentação futurista. A banda, conforme consta nas notas de "Contaminazione", podia contar com um sistema de amplificação quadrafônica Mack de mais de 6.000 watts operado pelo engenheiro de som Spartaco Di Mattei: um poder que, na época, nenhuma outra banda italiana podia dispor.

Em dezembro de 1973, o caminhão reboque, contendo o enorme e caro sistema e todo o valioso equipamento - estacionado em Roma na via Trionfale -, foi roubado, obrigando a banda a cancelar os shows já agendados. Para apoiar financeiramente o grupo, uma noite no Piper é organizada no mês de janeiro seguinte, com a participação de muitas bandas italianas. Em 1975, a banda lançou o single em inglês "Let's all go back/Anglosaxon woman" para a recém-formada gravadora Frog, mas logo depois entrou em crise: o cantor abandonou a formação mudando-se para a Suíça e por um certo período o grupo realizou alguns shows tocando apenas música instrumental (de uma dessas apresentações um álbum póstumo intitulado "… giudizio avrai" foi lançado em 1988) e então contratou temporariamente a cantora Michele Zarrillo da Semiramis - depois a banda gravou um disco para Frog, ainda inédito.

Em 1976, apesar de algumas mudanças de formação (a chegada de Mark Harris e Tony Wolmsley da Napoli Centrale) e de gênero musical, o grupo se separou ao final da turnê. 

O RETORNO

Mais tarde, por iniciativa do guitarrista Enzo Vita, o grupo se reformou com novos integrantes e lançou dois álbuns na década de noventa e depois voltou às sombras até 2011, quando voltou ao público com o álbum "Microstorie", sempre produzido por iniciativa de Enzo Vita, com a contribuição dos músicos Cristiano Micalizzi, Luca Trolli, Gianni Colajacomo, Pippo Matino, Sandro Deidda, Claudio Corvini, Giancarlo Ciminelli, Roberto Schiano, Marcello Sirignano, Prisca Amori, Adriana Ester Galo, Giuseppe Tortora, Daniele Pomo, Mimmo Sessa, Roberto Tiranti nos vocais e Enrico Solazzo nos teclados e co-arranjador. Apoiado por Marco Mori (Riserva Sonora) na gestão, e Stefano Profeta (Carpe Diem Edizioni).

No final de 2012 o grupo se reúne sempre por iniciativa de Enzo Vita, com a ajuda de Daniele (Danny) Pomo (baterista, já presente no álbum "Microstorie"). Além de Daniele Pomo (bateria, vocal), fazem parte da banda outros músicos de destaque da cena prog italiana do momento: Maurizio Meo no baixo, Massimo Pomo na guitarra e Riccardo Romano nos teclados e vocal (todos do grupo RanestRane). Il Rovescio della Medaglia tocou no Japão em abril de 2013 e esteve presente no Italian Progressive Rock Festival em Tóquio. Para a ocasião apresentou, com a ajuda da orquestra e pela primeira vez ao vivo, toda a obra "Contaminazione".

O dia 14 de outubro de 2016 marca o retorno ao nível recorde de Enzo Vita e Il Rovescio della Medaglia, com um álbum intitulado "Tribal domestic" de puro rock progressivo com tons hard, lançado pela Sony. O novo trabalho conta com a participação como cantor solo de Chris Catena, um hard rocker que já conta com colaborações de calibre internacional e fez vários álbuns tanto como solista, como também com outras bandas - Dr. U, Vitalij Kuprij etc.

Em "Tribal domestic" Enzo Vita faz uso da atuação de outros músicos como John Macaluso, Janne Stark, Vivien Lalu, Fernando Petry e Rino Amato, e em uma música ele também apresenta o vocalista original da banda, Pino Ballarini. Assim como em "Contaminazione", a suíte de 15 minutos que dá título ao álbum conta com a participação da Orchestra Filarmonica Calabrese, dirigida pelo americano Alexander Frey.

Em dezembro de 2017, Enzo Vita decidiu reestruturar completamente a equipe, recrutando o baixista Andrea Castelli, o baterista Andrea Bruni, o guitarrista Pino Polistina e os tecladistas Nicola Costanti e Carmelo Junior Arena, que também emprestam suas vozes. Com essa formação, a banda se prepara para o retorno aos shows ao vivo na Itália e no exterior.

Nos dois anos seguintes, a banda se envolveu em vários festivais, juntamente com atividades promocionais, incluindo Verona Prog Festival, Trasimeno Prog e Blubar Festival. Em setembro de 2018, na Abadia Cisterciense de Sal Galgano em Siena e ladeados por um quarteto de cordas, tocaram todo o álbum "Contaminazione". O concerto de San Galgano dará vida a "Contaminazione 2.0", um álbum gravado ao vivo que conta também com a participação de Vittorio De Scalzi (New Trolls) na flauta. Inicialmente agendado para a primavera de 2020, mas depois adiado devido à pandemia de COVID-19 de 2019-2021, foi lançado em novembro de 2020 no selo Jolly Roger Records.

Em agosto de 2020 Davide Pepi na guitarra e Marco Pisaneschi na bateria e vocal assumem a banda. Com estes dois enxertos Il Rovescio entrou em estúdio em fevereiro de 2021 para dar vida ao remake do histórico álbum de estréia "La Bibbia 50th Anniversario" que será lançado em setembro também pela Jolly Rogers Records.

HISTORY

DECADE OF 1970

The first group of the band is formed in Rome from the partnership of three former members of the beat group I Lombrichi with singer Gianni Mereu, later replaced by Sandro Falbo from Le Rivelazioni and finally by Pino Ballarini from Pescara who came to Rome to play with I Poema.

Originally, the band consisted of Gino Campoli (drums), Paol (bass), Maurizio (rhythm guitar) and Leonardo Antonucci (lead guitar). The first to leave the band was Gino Campoli who was replaced by none other than Stefano D'Orazio before the breakup.

In 1971, the group participated in the Festival di Musica d'Avanguardia e di Nuove Tendenze, winning a contract with the Italian RCA for which they recorded the debut album "La Bibbia". The band shows its size especially in concert, so the record is recorded "live", and is a hard rock with some symphonic hints played with good technique even if it is not particularly original, tracing the sound of British hard rock. For example, the track "Sodom and Gomorrah" mimics Deep Purple's style. The lyrics are somewhat pretentious, as they are episodes taken from the Old Testament, from "nothing" to "deluge", following the concept album idea. The LP came accompanied by a round insert in the shape of a medallion.

After the publication, the group resumed an intense live activity, also participating in some festivals, including the Davoli Pope or organized by Re Nudo - one of the main Italian magazines dedicated to counterculture and counter-information, of a libertarian nature, founded in Milan in November 1970 by a group of intellectuals and artists, among them Andrea Valcarenghi. In 1972, the band releases its second album, "Io come io", with a superior technical level, although less effective than the previous one. The work is inspired by Hegelian philosophy, and the first edition (7,000 copies) contains a metal medallion.

The band in 1973 saw the entry of Franco Di Sabatino on keyboards - coming from a recent experience with Il Paese dei Balocchi - who pushes the group towards a more refined style with clear classical influences. With the formation of five the album "Contaminazione" is recorded. This is unanimously considered the best work of the Roman band. Argentine composer Luis Bacalov is involved in the composition and arrangement of the song, who has recently had two symphonic rock experiences with New Trolls and Osanna. The result is one of the best Italian progressive rock records. The title clearly alludes to the contamination between rock instrumentation and symphony orchestra, with particular reference to the music of Bach, and the lyrics focus on the figure of an 18th century Scottish musician obsessed with the great composer who is believed to be the 21st reincarnated son. The disc, with an impressive technique, received a good response from critics and the public, to the point that an English version was made for the foreign market in 1975.

In addition to the good number of records sold, Il Rovescio's popularity was determined above all by the considerable audience success of its shows, attracted by the powerful audio system and futuristic instrumentation. The band, as noted in the liner notes of "Contaminazione", could count on a Mack quadraphonic amplification system of more than 6,000 watts operated by sound engineer Spartaco Di Mattei: a power that, at the time, no other Italian band could have.

In December 1973, the tow truck, containing the huge and expensive system and all the valuable equipment - parked in Rome on Via Trionfale - was stolen, forcing the band to cancel the shows already scheduled. To financially support the group, a night at Piper is organized the following January, with the participation of many Italian bands. In 1975, the band released the English-language single "Let's all go back/Anglosaxon woman" for the newly formed Frog label, but soon after it went into crisis: the singer abandoned the lineup, moving to Switzerland and for a certain period the group performed a few shows playing only instrumental music (from one of these performances a posthumous album entitled "… giudizio avrai" was released in 1988) and then temporarily hired singer Michele Zarrillo from Semiramis - later the band recorded an album for Frog, still unreleased.

In 1976, despite some lineup changes (the arrival of Mark Harris and Tony Wolmsley from Napoli Centrale) and musical genre, the group broke up at the end of the tour.

THE RETURN

Later, at the initiative of guitarist Enzo Vita, the group reformed with new members and released two albums in the nineties and then returned to the shadows until 2011, when it returned to the public with the album "Microstorie", always produced by Enzo Vita, with contributions from musicians Cristiano Micalizzi, Luca Trolli, Gianni Colajacomo, Pippo Matino, Sandro Deidda, Claudio Corvini, Giancarlo Ciminelli, Roberto Schiano, Marcello Sirignano, Prisca Amori, Adriana Ester Galo, Giuseppe Tortora, Daniele Pomo, Mimmo Sessa, Roberto Tiranti on vocals and Enrico Solazzo on keyboards and co-arranger. Supported by Marco Mori (Riserva Sonora) in the management, and Stefano Profeta (Carpe Diem Edizioni).

At the end of 2012, the group always meets at the initiative of Enzo Vita, with the help of Daniele (Danny) Pomo (drummer, already present on the album "Microstorie"). In addition to Daniele Pomo (drums, vocals), other prominent musicians from the Italian prog scene of the moment are part of the band: Maurizio Meo on bass, Massimo Pomo on guitar and Riccardo Romano on keyboards and vocals (all from the RanestRane group). Il Rovescio della Medaglia played in Japan in April 2013 and was present at the Italian Progressive Rock Festival in Tokyo. For the occasion, with the help of the orchestra and for the first time live, he presented the entire work "Contaminazione".

October 14, 2016 marks the return to record level of Enzo Vita and Il Rovescio della Medaglia, with an album entitled "Tribal domestic" of pure progressive rock with hard tones, released by Sony. The new work has the participation as a solo singer of Chris Catena, a hard rocker who already has collaborations of international caliber and has made several albums both as a soloist, as well as with other bands - Dr. U, Vitalij Kuprij, etc.

In "Tribal domestic" Enzo Vita makes use of the performance of other musicians such as John Macaluso, Janne Stark, Vivien Lalu, Fernando Petry and Rino Amato, and in one song he also features the band's original vocalist, Pino Ballarini. As with "Contaminazione", the 15-minute suite that gives the album its title features the participation of the Orchestra Filarmonica Calabrese, conducted by the American Alexander Frey.

In December 2017, Enzo Vita decided to completely restructure the team, recruiting bassist Andrea Castelli, drummer Andrea Bruni, guitarist Pino Polistina and keyboardists Nicola Costanti and Carmelo Junior Arena, who also lend their voices. With this lineup, the band prepares for the return to live shows in Italy and abroad.

Over the next two years, the band was involved in various festivals along with promotional activities including Verona Prog Festival, Trasimeno Prog and Blubar Festival. In September 2018, at the Cistercian Abbey of Sal Galgano in Siena and flanked by a string quartet, they played the entire "Contaminazione" album. The San Galgano concert will bring to life "Contaminazione 2.0", a live album that also features Vittorio De Scalzi (New Trolls) on flute. Initially scheduled for Spring 2020 but later delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019-2021, it was released in November 2020 on Jolly Roger Records.

In August 2020 Davide Pepi on guitar and Marco Pisaneschi on drums and vocals take over the band. With these two grafts Il Rovescio entered the studio in February 2021 to give life to the remake of the historic debut album "La Bibbia 50th Anniversario" which will be released in September also by Jolly Rogers Records.
