November (Hard Blues Rock {Suécia})

November foi uma banda sueca de hard rock formada em 1969. Ela foi uma das primeiras grandes bandas de hard rock da Suécia, e veio para estabelecer as bases para o movimento do hard rock na Suécia.

O grupo era formado por Christer Stålbrandt (vocal, baixo), Björn Inge (bateria) e Richard Rolf (guitarra). De acordo com STV.SE (Sveriges Television), a November foi classificada como "a primeira banda de hard rock e heavy metal da Suécia".

HISTÓRIA

INÍCIO

A história da November começou em 1968 no Tegelhögen, um clube juvenil em Vällingby (um subúrbio de Estocolmo). Neste clube, quatro jovens jogaram juntos como The Imps. Depois de alguns meses de ensaio, eles partiram para sua primeira turnê canadense. No final de 1968, Christer Stålbrandt deixou o grupo para se tornar membro do grupo recém-formado, Train. A formação da Train era Christer Stålbrandt (baixo, vocal), Theo Salsberg (bateria) e Snowy White (guitarra). DEPOIS DA NOVEMBER

Após a separação, Richard Rolf (guitarra) mudou-se para a Noruega e tornou-se membro do grupo Takt och Ton. O grupo consistia nos três membros restantes da Dream, que se tornaram um trio depois que o guitarrista Terje Rypdal deixou o grupo. Durante a última turnê da November na Noruega, eles ficaram impressionados com a guitarra de Richard Rolf e o queriam no grupo.

Björn Inge (bateria) continuou em turnê com diferentes grupos na Suécia e no exterior e, em 1974, formou o grupo Energy junto com Amadeo Nicolleti. Eles gravaram um álbum no mesmo ano. Christer Stålbrandt (baixo, vocal) começou a procurar novos músicos para ajudar a formar um novo grupo. Ele voltou ao clube juvenil local Tegelhögen, em Vällingby, e os encontrou em Jammargänget, que havia começado em November quatro anos antes. Em 1993 a banda se reuniu para um único show no Studion em Estocolmo. ESTILO MUSICAL

November é frequentemente referida como um grupo de "prog" que é, no entanto, uma designação duvidosa, pois o grupo pertencia ao selo comercial Sonet Records que, na época era especializada em grupos de jazz, pop e rock. HISTORY

BEGINNINGS

The story of November started in 1968 at Tegelhögen, a youth club in Vällingby (a Stockholm suburb). At this club four young men played together as The Imps. After a few months of rehearsal they went on their first ocandinavian tour. Toward the end of 1968 Christer Stålbrandt left the group to become a member of the newly formed group, Train. The line up of Train was Christer Stålbrandt (bass, vocal), Theo Salsberg (drums), and Snowy White (guitar). Shortly after the inception of Train, the founder and drummer Theo Salsberg left the group, to be replaced by The Imps' drummer Björn Inge.

Train played loud and heavy music, which drew a lot of attention and interest outside the local venues. In early Autumn of 1969, Snowy White decided to return to England to become involved in the music life there: but that is another story. The remaining members of the group then started to look for a new guitar player. They returned to the local youth club Tegelhögen. Here, in the so called Jammargänget (The Jam Gang), they met Richard Rolf, one of Amadeo Nicoletti's disciples. Nicoletti was the guitar hero in Vällingby, and had a strong gathering of pupils. After the first evening of rehearsals, Richard Rolf was considered the natural replacement for Snowy White. As a result, Train now consisted of Swedish members and they decided only to sing in Swedish. Their next step was to change the name of the group. This happened at, what is considered to be their breakthrough event, on November 1st, 1969, when they supported Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac at the Cue-Club in Gothenburg.

NOVEMBER WAS BORN

Back in Stockholm they found themselves at the centre of a growing interest for Swedish heavy rockgroups. Thomas Johansson, with his one man company EMA Telstar, became the groups manager. Roger Wallis, an English immigrant who had become involved in the Swedish popular music industry of the late 1960s, arranged for the recording of some songs in a studio at the Swedish National Radio. These songs was broadcasted on Swedish National Radio and presented as November's debut album. The response was overwhelming. Wallis then took November back to the same studio to record the ten tracks that became their debut album, "En ny tid är här...". It took three days to record and mix it, and the album was issued in Spring 1970. Immediately after the recording, November embarked on their first long tour. From now on they where permanently accompanied by Baletten, which consisted of Mats Bjurman, Hans 'Supersession' Forss, Jan Erik 'Super-session' Forss, Jan Erik 'Strömming' Strömberg, Staffan Larsson (the former bass player of The Imps), and lots of friends. The main purpose of Baletten was to drive the tour bus, carry equipment, and to play assorted percussion. 

November toured extensively in Sweden and abroad. It took them to countries in Europe such as England, The Netherlands and West Germany. They gave 25 performances in England, where they supported groups such as Vinegar Joe (with Elkie Brooks and Robert Palmer), and Chicken Shack. They where also invited to play at the exclusive rock club Speak Easy, where few foreign groups was allowed to play. In the audience they spotted all the members of The Who and The Faces, as well as Jeff Beck and others of the rock élite of England at that time. November also toured in Denmark, Finland and Norway. In Finland they often played together with Tasavallan Presidentti and in Norway and Denmark they played with Popul Vuh and Savage Rose.

In the Spring of 1971, November went back into the studio to record their second album, "2:a November", with George Wadenius as producer. There was little time to rehearse new material, except during soundchecks before gigs. Most songwriting took place in the tour bus. A good example of this is the song "Allt genom dej", which can be found on the live CD with November, previously issued by Mellotronen. The song was written in the morning and performed later that day in front of 2000 people, without any rehearsal. It was later recorded as one of the songs for their third album.

The constant touring influenced November's musical development and took the group members into different musical directions. This is expressed on their third album, which was to be their last. It was produced by Sam Charters, the producer of groups such as Country Joe and The Fish, Frost, Tasavallan Presidentti, The Third Power, and many others. The album was recorded in December 1971, mixed the 7th of March, and released later that year. On this album one can hear a sad undertone which might be proof of an unusual way of living as a constantly touring rockband. The name of the album, "6:e November", was taken from the date of the death of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf on the battlefield outside Lützen in Germany 1632 (read about the Battle of Lützen), when the Swedish army was defeated by the famous German fieldmarshal Wallenstein. The painting on the cover of the album shows the king mortally wounded by an enemy bullet in the back. A suitable title for a group that was soon to dissolve. In the summer of 1972, November decided to split up after their next tour. New Years Eve 1972 was their last concert. It took place at the club Domino in Stockholm.

AFTER NOVEMBER

After the split, Richard Rolf (guitar) moved to Norway and became member of the group Takt och Ton. It consisted of the three remaining members of Dream, who had become a trio after the guitar player, Terje Rypdal, left the group. During November's last tour in Norway, they were impressed by Richard Rolf's guitar playing and wanted him in the group.

Björn Inge (drums) continued touring with different groups in Sweden and abroad, and in 1974 he started the group Energy together with Amadeo Nicolleti. They recorded one album the same year. Christer Stålbrandt (bass, vocal) started to look for new musicians to help form a new group. He returned to the local youth club Tegelhögen, in Vällingby, and found them in Jammargänget, which had seen the dawn of November four years earlier. In 1974 they recorded an album under the name Saga, which shows the same musical style as the last November album. But the group did not last for long and Christer Stålbrandt decided to quit the musical scene for good. Richard Rolf was one of the founding members of Bash and later joined Nature.

In 1993 the band reunited for a single show at the Studion in Stockholm. A concert was also held in 2007, when the Mellotronen label, which released all of November's albums on CD, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a festival on Silja Line. The performance was released on DVD in spring 2007. During 2007, November also played at Sweden Rock festival, Satin in Örebro, and Kägelbanan in Stockholm.

MUSIC STYLE

November is often referred to as a "prog" group which is, however, a dubious designation as the group belonged to the commercial label Sonet Records which, at the time, specialized in jazz, pop and rock groups. The group was therefore outside the Swedish progressive music movement that started around the same time. November also lacked Leftist political lyrics, something that is often associated with the music movement.

The group played hard rock with heavy blues influence inspired by groups like Led Zeppelin, Cream and Mountain, but with lyrics in Swedish, which gave the music a special character. At the time, it was unusual for non-Anglo-Saxon rock bands to sing in their own language.

EXTRA INFORMATION

Former The Train guitarist Snowy White later played for several years in the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, as well as being part of the band Fleetwood Mac. Snowy White also played regularly with Pink Floyd and toured with Roger Waters.
