HISTÓRIA

DÉCADA DE 1970

Em 1967 foi formada em Nápoles o grupo I Battitori Selvaggi, fundado por Raffaele Cascone, futuro DJ do Per voi Giovani e amigo de Edoardo Bennato (a quem este dedicaria "Venderò"), que tinha influência da beat music. Além de Cascone (guitarra), o grupo era formado por Michele Cupaiolo (baixo), Marco Cecioni (vocal) e Giancarlo Stinga (bateria). Cascone sai logo depois, e o grupo contrata o violonista Lino Ajello, vindo do Volti di Pietra, outro grupo napolitano, e decide mudar de nome inspirado no quadro "Bronze ballet", pintado em 1940 por Edward Wadsworth e mantido na Tate Gallery em Londres.

Com esta formação o grupo consegue um contrato com a ARC, para a qual edita em 1969 o single de 45 rpm "Neve calda", ainda influenciado pela beat music, mas com uma sonoridade que tende para o hard rock.

No ano seguinte foi lançado pela RCA o primeiro long play, "Sirio 2222" (precedido pelo single "Sì mama mama", que não constava no LP), disco ainda ligado aos sons beat da época, mas com notas de blues (na ecológica "Un posto" e em "Incantesimo"), hard rock (em "Un posto") e progressive rock ("Meditazione" e, sobretudo, a mini suite "Missione Sirio 2222"): um arranjo de "Meditazione" faz parte do álbum "ll mio nome è nessuno" (Molto Recording) de Nevruz, produzido por Peppe Ponti e Lino Patriota e com participação do cantor Marco Cecioni e do guitarrista Lino Ajello da formação original que esteve presente no álbum de 1970 "Sírio 2222". O instrumento que se destaca é definitivamente a guitarra de Ajello, criadora do som "sujo" que caracteriza algumas partes do disco. Uma das músicas do disco, "Ti risveglierai con me", composta por Piero Umiliani, faz parte da trilha sonora do filme "5 bambole per la luna d'agosto". O álbum, mal divulgado, passou completamente despercebido e a RCA não renovou o contrato da banda.

No inverno de 1971, o jovem e talentoso tecladista Gianni Leone (vindo da Città Frontale) juntou-se ao grupo. Agora como um grupo de cinco homens, os membros mudaram-se para a Polydor, deixando definitivamente para trás a marca beat. A virada imposta por Leone cria o primeiro descontentamento no grupo, e Cupaiolo e Cecioni deixam a formação. Este último mudou-se para a Suécia, abrindo um caminho que mais tarde uniria outros membros do grupo. Enquanto isso Leone e Stinga colaboram com Adriano Celentano, tocando no álbum "I mali del secolo". Tendo substituído o baixista por Roman Vito Manzari, o quarteto lançou o segundo álbum, "Ys", no verão de 1972, um disco complexo e difícil, que combina sonoridades clássicas com um estilo musical ainda mais pesado, muito distante do trabalho anterior.

O álbum conceitual é inspirado em um conto medieval francês "L'histoire d'Ys"", de origem celta, sobre uma cidade mítica na costa Britânica que teria sido engolida pelo oceano (a maioria das versões diz que a cidade - em outras, vila - localizava-se na Baía de Douarnenez, na França). O demiurgo do disco é justamente o organista Leone, também engajado no canto, que faz uso de um grande número de teclados para criar um sugestivo tapete sonoro que repropõe as atmosferas sombrias e misteriosas do imaginário medieval. O resto do grupo também fornece evidências notáveis. Os textos surreais contam o destino do último homem sobrevivente na Terra que, tendo aprendido a verdade através de uma voz, é forçado a vagar em desespero para transmiti-la a pelo menos um outro ser humano vivo. A tarefa revela-se impossível também devido a uma entidade sobrenatural que o priva dos sentidos um de cada vez até o levar à morte, e mesmo nos braços deste último não conseguirá falar.

O álbum também foi aclamado pela crítica além das fronteiras, graças também à boa promoção da Polydor. Graças ao sucesso, principalmente deste último álbum, o grupo passa a estar entre os mais requisitados da cena progressiva e participa com sucesso de diversas críticas, incluindo o encontro Davoli Pop em Reggio Emilia, o Be-In em Nápoles e a Contracanzonissima organizada pela revista Ciao 2001.

O grupo começa a trabalhar para fazer o terceiro álbum, com os seus membros morando juntos por um tempo em uma fazenda em San Martino Monte l'Abate, perto de Rimini, quando inesperadamente em setembro de 1973 anuncia a dissolução. Ainda com obrigações contratuais com a Polydor, Leone e Stinga ainda gravam um single de 45 rpm, contendo "La tua casa comoda" e "Donna Vittoria", publicado em nome do grupo (na capa tem foto dos quatro membros, mesmo que Manzari e Ajello não tenham participado da sessão). A peça instrumental do lado B deve seu título à esposa do então Presidente da República Giovanni Leone.

O tecladista, Gianni Leone, muda-se para os Estados Unidos para empreender carreira solo sob o nome de LeoNero, gravando um álbum em Nova York em 1975 (mas lançado pela EMI em 1977) no qual ele mesmo toca todos os instrumentos, um segundo álbum em Los Angeles em 1980, além de alguns singles, ganhando seguidores especialmente no Japão. Lino Ajello e Gianchi Stinga, mudam-se para a Suécia e abrem um estúdio de gravação, o Hulman, no centro de Estocolmo que, mais tarde, será frequentado por Roxette e Europe. Manzari permaneceu mais alguns anos no meio musical como músico de estúdio, tocando entre outros com Domenico Modugno, Alan Sorrenti e Nada.

DÉCADAS DE 1990 E 2000

Em 1990 a revista de música Raro! lança um disco, "Il re del castello", que contém algumas gravações da primeira formação do grupo, que remontam ao período de 1969 a 1970: para ser mais preciso, algumas músicas gravadas durante as sessões de "Sirio 2222" mas não incluídas no álbum ("Acidenti", "Il re del castello" e uma versão instrumental de "Neve calda") e quatro músicas gravadas em espanhol (incluindo um cover de "Eternità" da I Camaleonti).

Em 1995, Gianni Leone tenta reorganizar a formação que esteve presente no álbum "Ys", mas esbarra no desinteresse dos demais integrantes originais. Portanto, o antigo nome ressuscita em torno de um trio completado por Romolo Amici no baixo e Ugo Vantini na bateria, ambos ex-integrantes do Divae, banda romana de neo-progressive que recebeu o tecladista em seu álbum de estréia ("Determinazione", 1995). Com esta formação dedica-se a uma intensa atividade ao vivo documentada pelo excelente álbum ao vivo "Trys", contendo a inédita "Technoage".

Posteriormente, Amici deixa a banda, seguido imediatamente por Vantini, que se juntará a Ezra Winston e fundará então o grupo VU→Meters. Desde então, o grupo faz contínuas mudanças na formação (mas sempre apostando na fórmula consagrada do trio), contudo encontrando sempre um grande sucesso de público, também a nível internacional. Na verdade, em 2000, a Balletto di Bronzo esteve entre as poucas bandas italianas a participar no NEARfest, um dos principais festivais de rock progressivo do mundo.

Em 2008 foi lançado o DVD "Live in Rome", editado pela Black Widow Genovesa, testemunho de um concerto romano (com conjunto completado por Adolfo Ramundo na bateria e Marco Capozi no baixo) no qual há 4 obras inéditas: "Napoli sotterranea", "Deliquio viola", "Certezze fragili" e "L'emofago".

No final de 2009 foi publicado o livro "Il Balletto di Bronzo e l'idea del delirio organizzato" de Gianmaria Consiglio, acompanhado de um CD contendo versões inéditas ao vivo de canções do grupo e de Gianni Leone como solista. A Il Balletto di Bronzo continua atualmente a dar concertos, tanto na Itália como no estrangeiro, com grande sucesso.

DÉCADA DE 2010

Em 2011, o selo BTF lançou "On the road to Ys" em formato vinil, que inclui material raro e faixas ao vivo. Em 2012 foi lançado "On the road to Ys... and beyond", em formato CD, que inclui algumas músicas a mais que a versão em vinil.

Em 2013, Lino Ajello e Marco Cecioni, retornando de Estocolmo, reformaram sua versão da Il Balletto di Bronzo com novos músicos, deixando os direitos de uso do nome para Gianni Leone. Porém, o tecladista participa das gravações de "Cuma 2015 d.C.", novo trabalho de estúdio que após 40 anos reúne três dos integrantes históricos da formação sob o apelido temporário de Lino Ajello, Marco Cecioni e Gianni Leone del Balletto Di Bronzo.

O disco sai em 19 de fevereiro de 2016, com o título ligeiramente alterado para "Cuma 2016 d.C.", e é creditado a Il Balletto di Bronzo di Lino Ajello e Marco Cecioni: Gianni Leone aparece na capa como convidado especial, participando de três faixas do álbum ("Figlio dei fiori", "Ordine disordine", que fecha o disco, e uma nova versão de "Neve calda"). "Cumas 2016 d.C." no entanto, desvia-se do progressivo habitual, para abraçar um robusto hard rock italiano.

Este projeto paralelo a Balletto di Bronzo, denominado "Il Balletto di Bronzo di Lino Ajello e Marco Cecioni", terminou definitivamente logo após a publicação do álbum "Cuma 2016 d.C." e não teve mais nenhuma sequência.

A Balletto di Bronzo na atual formação composta por Gianni Leone (teclados, vocal), Riccardo Spilli (bateria) e Ivano Salvatori (baixo), continua uma intensa atividade concertística na Itália e no exterior, especialmente no Japão e no México.

Em 2020 foi lançado o álbum "Official bootleg" pelo selo Black Widow, tanto em formato de vinil quanto em formato de CD, e inteiramente gravado ao vivo. E, em 2023, é lançado o mais novo trabalho da banda, intitulado "Lemures".

INFLUÊNCIA CULTURAL

• No filme "I due maggiolini più matti del mondo" (1969), no quarto da filha da personagem interpretada por Ingrassia, entre os vários cartazes pendurados nas paredes, encontra-se também um cartaz publicitário reproduzindo a capa do álbum "Sirio 2222".
• Na trilha sonora do filme "5 bambole per la luna d'agosto" (1969) está a música "Ti risveglierai con me", lançada em vinil no ano seguinte.
• A trilha sonora do filme "Delitto d'amore" (1974) contém uma versão instrumental da música "Neve calda".
• Em 1970 o grupo participou de alguns comerciais da Coca-Cola veiculados no "Carosello".
• O álbum "Sirio 2222" inspirou o nome do programa de rádio "Sirio 6070" transmitido nas estações FM Pratesi Radio Insieme e, posteriormente, White Radio.

Il Balletto di Bronzo is an Italian

progressive rock band formed in

Naples in the late sixties.

HISTORY

DECADE OF 1970

In 1967, the group I Battitori Selvaggi was formed in Naples, founded by Raffaele Cascone, the future DJ of Per voi Giovani and friend of Edoardo Bennato (to whom he would dedicate "Venderò"), who was influenced by beat music. In addition to Cascone (guitar), the group was formed by Michele Cupaiolo (bass), Marco Cecioni (vocals) and Giancarlo Stinga (drums). Cascone leaves soon after, and the group hires guitarist Lino Ajello, coming from Volti di Pietra, another Neapolitan group, and decides to change its name inspired by the painting "Bronze ballet", painted in 1940 by Edward Wadsworth and kept at the Tate Gallery in London .

With this line-up, the group signed a contract with ARC, for which they released the 45 rpm single "Neve calda" in 1969, still influenced by beat music, but with a sound that leaned towards hard rock.

The following year, RCA released their first long play, "Sirio 2222" (preceded by the single "Sì mama mama", which was not on the LP), an album still linked to the beat sounds of the time, but with notes of blues (in the ecological "Un posto" and in "Incantesimo"), hard rock (in "Un posto") and progressive rock ("Meditazione" and, above all, the mini suite "Missione Sirio 2222"): an arrangement of "Meditazione" is part of the album "ll mio nome è nessuno" (2018, Molto Recording) by Nevruz, produced by Peppe Ponti and Lino Patriota and with the participation of singer Marco Cecioni and guitarist Lino Ajello from the original formation that was present on the 1970 album "Sírio 2222". The instrument that stands out is definitely Ajello's guitar, creator of the "dirty" sound that characterizes some parts of the record. One of the songs on the album, "Ti risveglierai con me", composed by Piero Umiliani, is part of the soundtrack of the movie "5 bambole per la luna d'agosto". The poorly publicized album went completely unnoticed and RCA did not renew the band's contract.

In the winter of 1971, the young and talented keyboard player Gianni Leone (coming from Città Frontale) joined the group. Now as a five-man group, the members moved to Polydor, leaving the beat brand behind for good. The turn imposed by Leone creates the first discontent in the group, and Cupaiolo and Cecioni leave the formation. The latter moved to Sweden, paving a path that would later unite other members of the group. Meanwhile Leone and Stinga collaborate with Adriano Celentano, playing on the album "I mali del secolo". Having replaced the bassist with Roman Vito Manzari, the quartet released their second album, "Ys", in the summer of 1972, a complex and difficult record, which combines classic sounds with an even heavier musical style, far removed from their previous work.

The concept album is inspired by a medieval French tale "L'histoire d'Ys"", of Celtic origin, about a mythical city on the British coast that would have been swallowed by the ocean (most versions say that the city - in others, village - was located in the Bay of Douarnenez, France). The demiurge of the record is precisely the organist Leone, also engaged in singing, who makes use of a large number of keyboards to create a suggestive sound carpet that re-proposes the dark and mysterious atmospheres of the medieval imagination. The rest of the group also provide remarkable evidence. The surreal texts tell the fate of the last surviving man on Earth who, having learned the truth through a voice, is forced to wander in desperation to pass it on to at least one other living human being. The task also proves to be impossible due to a supernatural entity that deprives him of his senses one at a time until he dies, and even in the latter's arms he will not be able to speak.

The album also received critical acclaim beyond borders, thanks also to good promotion from Polydor. Thanks to the success, mainly of the latter, the group is among the most requested of the progressive scene and successfully participates in several critics, including the Davoli Pop meeting in Reggio Emilia, the Be-In in Naples and the Contracanzonissima organized by the magazine Ciao 2001.

The group began work to make a third album, with its members living together for a while on a farm in San Martino Monte l'Abate, near Rimini, when unexpectedly in September 1973 it announced its dissolution. Still with contractual obligations with Polydor, Leone and Stinga still record a 45 rpm single, containing "La tua casa comoda" and "Donna Vittoria", published in the name of the group (on the cover there is a photo of the four members, even if Manzari and Ajello did not participate in the session). The instrumental piece on side B owes its title to the wife of the then President of the Republic Giovanni Leone.

The keyboardist, Gianni Leone, moves to the US to undertake a solo career under the name LeoNero, recording an album in New York in 1975 (but released by EMI in 1977) on which he plays all the instruments himself, a second album in Los Angeles Angeles in 1980, plus a few singles, gaining a following especially in Japan. Lino Ajello and Gianchi Stinga move to Sweden and open a recording studio, the Hulman, in central Stockholm which, later, will be frequented by Roxette and Europe. Manzari stayed a few more years in the music industry as a studio musician, playing with Domenico Modugno, Alan Sorrenti and Nada, among others.

DECADES OF 1990 AND 2000

In 1990 the music magazine Raro! releases an album, "Il re del castello", which contains some recordings of the group's first formation, dating back to the period from 1969 to 1970: to be more precise, some songs recorded during the "Sirio 2222" sessions but not included in the album ("Accidenti", "Il re del castello" and an instrumental version of "Neve calda") and four songs recorded in Spanish (including a cover of "Eternità" by I Camaleonti).

In 1995, Gianni Leone tries to reorganize the lineup that was present on the album "Ys", but comes up against the lack of interest of the other original members. Therefore, the old name is resurrected around a trio completed by Romolo Amici on bass and Ugo Vantini on drums, both former members of Divae, a Roman neo-progressive band that featured the keyboardist on their debut album ("Determinazione", 1995). With this line-up he dedicates himself to an intense live activity documented by the excellent live album "Trys", containing the unpublished "Technoage".

Subsequently, Amici leaves the band, followed immediately by Vantini, who will join Ezra Winston and found the group VU→Meters. Since then, the group has made continuous line-up changes (but always betting on the trio's consecrated formula), yet always finding great success with the public, also at an international level. In fact, in 2000, Balletto di Bronzo was among the few Italian bands to participate in NEARfest, one of the main progressive rock festivals in the world.

In 2008 the DVD "Live in Rome" was released, edited by Black Widow Genovesa, testimony of a Roman concert (with a set completed by Adolfo Ramundo on drums and Marco Capozi on bass) in which there are 4 unpublished works: "Napoli sotterranea", "Deliquio viola", "Certezze fragili" and "L'emofago".

At the end of 2009, the book "Il Balletto di Bronzo e l'idea del delirio organizzato" by Gianmaria Consiglio was published, accompanied by a CD containing unpublished live versions of songs by the group and by Gianni Leone as a soloist. Il Balletto di Bronzo continues today to give concerts, both in Italy and abroad, with great success.

DECADE OF 2010

In 2011, the BTF label released "On the road to Ys" in vinyl format, which includes rare material and live tracks. In 2012 "On the road to Ys... and beyond" was released in CD format, which includes a few more songs than the vinyl version.

In 2013, Lino Ajello and Marco Cecioni, returning from Stockholm, reformed their version of Il Balletto di Bronzo with new musicians, leaving the rights to use the name to Gianni Leone. However, the keyboardist participates in the recordings of "Cuma 2015 d.C.", a new studio work that after 40 years brings together three of the historical members of the formation under the temporary nickname of Lino Ajello, Marco Cecioni and Gianni Leone del Balletto Di Bronzo.

The disc comes out on February 19, 2016, with the title slightly changed to "Cuma 2016 d.C.", and is credited to Il Balletto di Bronzo di Lino Ajello e Marco Cecioni: Gianni Leone appears on the cover as a special guest, participating in three tracks from the album ("Figlio dei fiori", "Ordine disordine", which closes the album, and a new version of "Neve calda"). "Cuma 2016 d.C." however, it deviates from the usual progressive, to embrace robust Italian hard rock.

This parallel project to Balletto di Bronzo, called Il Balletto di Bronzo di Lino Ajello e Marco Cecioni, ended definitively shortly after the publication of the album "Cuma 2016 d.C." and there was no further sequel.

The Balletto di Bronzo, in its current formation composed of Gianni Leone (keyboards, vocals), Riccardo Spilli (drums) and Ivano Salvatori (bass), continues an intense concert activity in Italy and abroad, especially in Japan and Mexico.

In 2020, the album "Official bootleg" was released by the Black Widow label, both in vinyl and CD format, and entirely recorded live. And in 2023 the band's newest work is released, entitled "Lemures".

CULTURAL INFLUENCE

• In the film "I due maggiolini più matti del mondo" (1969), in the bedroom of the daughter of the character played by Ingrassia, among the various posters hanging on the walls, there is also an advertising poster reproducing the cover of the album "Sirio 2222".
• On the soundtrack of the film "5 bambole per la luna d'agosto" (1969) is the song "Ti risveglierai con me", released on vinyl the following year.
• The soundtrack of the movie "Delitto d'amore" (1974) contains an instrumental version of the song "Neve calda".
• In 1970 the group participated in some Coca-Cola commercials aired on "Carosello".
• The album "Sirio 2222" inspired the name of the radio program "Sirio 6070" broadcast on FM stations Pratesi Radio Insieme and later White Radio.
