HISTORY
Fruupp was created by Vincent McCusker, a Maghera native in Derry County, Northern Ireland. Vincent had been a member of The Blues by Five (a relief group in the infamous Irish Showband ballroom scene).
Many musicians tried the band before Vincent selected the final lineup: Vincent McCusker (guitar, vocals), Martin Foye (drums), Stephen J. Houston (oboe, keyboards, vocal) and Peter Farelly (flute, bass, lead vocal).
The band lived and rehearsed in a crumbling house in Belfast for several weeks in the summer of 1971. Legend has it that the band's name, Fruupp, came from a young female ghost who supposedly haunted the house. The fact is that the name came from a sheet of Letraset, which had been used except for the letters F, R, U and P. The group added another U and a second P to reach the imperfectly formed word, Fruupp.
Fruupp performed his first concert at Ulster Hall, Belfast on June 23, 1971, supporting Rory Gallagher. Shortly thereafter, they bought a 1967 Ford Transit Van - unique wheelbase, license plate number JRD 610E and nicknamed The Wasp - for £450 pounds. Within a week they boarded the Heysham/Liverpool Ferry en route to London, stopping on July 2, 1971 in Manchester to play at Mr Smith's Club and starting an intense concert activity (over 200 concerts a year). After two years of performing, they created a demo tape and were hired by Pye Records, their underground music, and progressive rock label Dawn Records.
In 1973, at the invitation of Dawn Records, the group recorded their first album, "Future legends". The album contains McCusker's compositions arranged with Houston's participation, and in only one of them is Charles the co-author of the song. The album was released on October 5, 1973.
In 1974, without interrupting the shows, the group recorded a second album, "Seven secrets", of a more progressive orientation (but keeping, as the third album, elements of Celtic folklore), with compositions of up to 10 minutes. The first two albums were not commercially successful.
In the same year, Fruupp, having recorded his third (concept) album - "The prince of heaven's eyes" - led a successful tour of the UK and the European continent. Despite playing hundreds of shows during this period, no live production had yet been released, although there are illegal recordings of live shows in England and Ireland. A concert at Friars Aylesbury club played on December 6, 1975 was recorded using a mobile unit for a possible album - "Live at Friars Aylesbury" - but after a while the master tapes were completely destroyed by fire in an apartment the musicians shared in Peckham, London.
At various shows on the tour, they perform in conjunction with the band King Crimson, whose then member Ian MacDonald has committed to producing their next album.
After a tour in 1974, Stephen Houston left Fruupp and joined the band Liberation Suite (founded by Miles McKee who now works on a Christian radio), which played "Christian music". He was replaced by John Mason, with whom Fruupp recorded his latest album, "Modern masquerades" (1975), produced by multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, better known as founder of King Crimson and Foreigner. "Modern masquerades" was still interesting, but it lost its specific sound, characteristic of Houston's multifaceted talent and his many instruments in favor of a synthetic sound. Also in this composition, the group performed for another year and a half, ending its activities in the year 1976.
AFTER FRUUPP
None of the members subsequently reached a level comparable to Fruupp's work in music. After experiencing religious conversion and even serving as pastor of the Methodological Church in England and Ireland, Stephen Houston then conducted news broadcasts in Dallas (Texas, USA) and finally returned to the United Kingdom, settling in Wiltshire. He continues to play and record music and also maintains the site fruupp.com.
Peter Farrelly lives in Belfast and apparently far from the music scene. Martin Foye played the rock bands The Bad Articles (quite popular in Ireland), The Crowd (later renamed MGM) and The Moon. Vincent McCusker plays in a band in a bar in Northern Ireland and works in a music store. The fate of John Mason is not known to the public.
