HISTÓRIA

Ramatam foi uma banda estadunidense notável por ter April Lawton, uma guitarrista "feminina". Além de April Lawton, a banda contava com a presença de Mike Pinera - conhecido por seu trabalho com a Blues Image ("Ride captain, ride") e mais tarde com a Iron Butterfly, com quem gravou o álbum "Metamorphosis" - e Mitch Mitchell, que tinha sido membro da The Jimi Hendrix Experience. A banda foi completada pelo tecladista Tommy Sullivan, que havia sido membro do The Brooklyn Bridge (mais tarde The Bridge) - grupo musical americano mais conhecido por sua versão de milhões de vendas de "The worst that could happen", de Jimmy Webb - e o baixista Russel Smith, que também desempenhou a função de co-escritor em algumas das músicas.

O primeiro álbum, "Ramatam", foi gravado no Criteria Studios em Miami, Flórida, e produzido por Tom Dowd. Todas as músicas eram originais da banda ou de seus membros individualmente. A Atlantic Records foi a responsável pela distribuição.

MUDANÇAS NA FORMAÇÃO E SEGUNDO ÁLBUM

A saída de Mitch Mitchell veio antes da banda lançar seu segundo e último álbum, "In April came the dawning of the red suns" (1973). Mike Pinera deixou a banda depois de alegar que Lawton queria transformar Ramatam na April Lawton Band. Mike Pinera e Mitch Mitchell saíram da banda, deixando o foco inteiramente em Lawton. Jimmy Walker substituiu Mitchell e a banda gravou seu segundo álbum, "In April came the dawning of the red suns", junto com Tommy Sullivan no baixo. Desta vez, a produção foi assumida por Geoffrey Haslam, e o álbum foi gravado no Atlantic Studios, em Nova York. 

É importante destacar que 1973 foi o ano do início da crise do petróleo e a indústria da música lutava com a falta de matéria-prima para a produção de discos. APRIL LAWTON

April Lawton nasceu em em 30 de julho de 1948 e faleu em 23 de novembro de 2006. Seu estilo de tocar era uma mistura de Jeff Beck, Hendrix e Allan Holdsworth. Lawton não deu entrevistas, se recusou a discutir o passado e havia rumores de que era transgênero - rumores confirmados por sua amiga, a guitarrista da banda Fanny, June Millington, em uma entrevista em 2010 para o GuitarGearHeads. O cantor Dee Snider afirmou que Lawton ainda era homem enquanto estava na banda Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Mike Pinera, ex-colega de banda, fez uma declaração na revista Guitar Player sobre o gênero de Lawton: "Posso atestar que ela é uma mulher", declarou Pinera. Ferrara, homem, em 30 de julho de 1948 no Brooklyn, Nova York, e usou esse nome para fins da Previdência Social até 1977. Registros subsequentes da Previdência Social indicam uma mudança de nome para April Trewhala, de 15 de fevereiro de 1978 até meados de 2002. De 31 de julho de 2002 até sua morte em 06 de dezembro de 2006, os registros da Previdência Social indicam que ela usou o nome April Lawton.

Depois da Ramatam e April Lawton Band, April Lawton deixou a cena musical para se concentrar em pintura e design gráfico. Sua vida pessoal permaneceu muito privada até sua morte por insuficiência cardíaca em sua casa, em 23 de novembro de 2006, aos 58 anos.

Ramatam was an American band notable for having April Lawton, a "female" guitarist. In addition to April Lawton, the band had the presence of Mike Pinera - known for his work with Blues Image ("Ride captain, ride") and later with Iron Butterfly, with whom he recorded the album "Metamorphosis" - and Mitch Mitchell, who had been a member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The band was rounded out by keyboardist Tommy Sullivan, who had been a member of The Brooklyn Bridge (later The Bridge) - American music group best known for their multi-million selling version of Jimmy Webb's "The worst that could happen" - and bassist Russell Smith, who also served as co-writer on some of the songs.

The first album, "Ramatam", was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida and produced by Tom Dowd. All songs were originals by the band or its individual members. Atlantic Records was responsible for distribution.

CHANGES IN LINE-UP AND SECOND ALBUM

Mitch Mitchell's departure came before the band released their second and final album, "In April came the dawning of the red suns" (1973). Mike Pinera left the band after claiming that Lawton wanted to turn Ramatam into the April Lawton Band. Mike Pinera and Mitch Mitchell left the band, leaving the focus entirely on Lawton. Jimmy Walker replaced Mitchell and the band recorded their second album, "In April came the dawning of the red suns", along with Tommy Sullivan on bass. This time, production was taken over by Geoffrey Haslam, and the album was recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York.

It is important to highlight that 1973 was the year of the beginning of the oil crisis and the music industry struggled with the lack of raw material for the production of records. Black disks have suddenly become thinner and therefore more expensive. This reflected on the artists: anyone who didn't promise a profit was simply dismissed. Ramatam was one of those.

Under pressure from business and with disagreements in musical direction, the band broke up in 1974, with April Lawton starting her new project, the April Lawton Band, which also failed.

APRIL LAWTON

April Lawton (born in July 30, 1948 - dead November 23, 2006). Her playing style was a mix of Jeff Beck, Hendrix, and Allan Holdsworth. Lawton gave no interviews, refused to discuss the past, and was rumoured to be transgender - rumours confirmed by her friend, Fanny's guitarist June Millington, in a 2010 interview for GuitarGearHeads. Singer Dee Snider claimed Lawton was still male while in the band Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Mike Pinera, former bandmate, made a statement in Guitar Player magazine regarding Lawton's gender: "I can attest to her being a woman", declared Pinera. "When I asked her about the rumors, she took my hand and gave me a 'first base' account. I know they have technology for that now, but, back then, no way!".

Gender reassignment surgery has been practised since the 1930s, and was available in the United States from 1965. Social Security Administration Applications and Claims documents provided by ancestry.com confirm that April Lawton was born Gregory R. Ferrara, male, on 30 July 1948 in Brooklyn, New York, and used this name for Social Security purposes through 1977. Subsequent Social Security records indicate a name change to April Trewhala, from 15 Feb 1978 through mid-2002. From 31 July 2002 through her death on 06 December 2006, Social Security records indicate she used the name April Lawton.

After the Ramatam and April Lawton Band, April Lawton left the music scene to focus on painting and graphic design. Her personal life remained very private until her death from heart failure at her home on November 23, 2006, aged 58.
