HISTÓRIA
Continuum foi concebida na Holanda pelo multi-instrumentista húngaro Yoel Schwarcz em 1967. O nome Continuum foi tirado do título de exposições de pinturas de Schwarcz em uma galeria de Londres para a qual ele pintou profissionalmente.
Ele desenvolveu suas idéias musicais com um guitarrista tcheco chamado Jan e eles se apresentaram como uma dupla em um clube em Amsterdã no verão seguinte. Schwarcz voltou a Londres enquanto Jan decidiu permanecer em Amsterdã, e logo depois Schwarcz juntou forças com o guitarrista clássico John Warren. Eles decidiram formar um grupo para desenvolver suas idéias comuns, com a formação sendo completada após a chegada de Mike Hart no contrabaixo e Dick Wildman na bateria. A RCA firmou um contrato com Yoel Schwarcz (não com a Continuum) e a Continuum lançou seu primeiro álbum autointitulado em 1970. O lado A do álbum consistia em quatro improvisações musicais de Bach e Handel. O lado B era uma longa suíte lateral em quatro partes composta por Richard Hartley, não membro da banda, e baseada na obra poética de Lord Byron.
Em 1971, apenas Schwarcz permaneceu da formação que gravou o primeiro álbum. Os músicos daquele álbum se sentiam desconfortáveis com a improvisação, que Schwarcz queria explorar mais. Ele também procurou substituir alguns dos sons acústicos da banda por sons elétricos. Embora Warren tivesse decidido deixar a banda, ele e Schwarcz permaneceram bons amigos.
Entraram Peter Billam e Harvey Troupe para formar a seção rítmica, Billam também fornecendo guitarra solo. HISTORY
Continuum was conceived in the Netherlands by Hungarian multi-instrumentalist Yoel Schwarcz in 1967. The name Continuum was taken from the title of Schwarcz's painting exhibitions in a London gallery for which he painted professionally.
He developed his musical ideas with a Czech guitarist named Jan and they performed as a duo at a club in Amsterdam the following summer. Schwarcz returned to London while Jan decided to stay in Amsterdam, and shortly thereafter Schwarcz joined forces with classical guitarist John Warren. They decided to form a group to develop their common ideas, with the line-up being completed after the arrival of Mike Hart on bass and Dick Wildman on drums. Although the project was formalized in the structure of a band, Schwarcz was the de facto leader.
RCA signed a contract with Yoel Schwarcz (not Continuum) and Continuum released their first self-titled album in 1970. Side A of the album consisted of four musical improvisations by Bach and Handel. Side B was a long four-part side suite composed by Richard Hartley, a non-band member, and based on the poetic work of Lord Byron.
In 1971, only Schwarcz remained from the formation that recorded the first album. The musicians on that album were uncomfortable with improvisation, which Schwarcz wanted to explore further. He also sought to replace some of the band's acoustic sounds with electric sounds. Although Warren had decided to leave the band, he and Schwarcz remained good friends.
Peter Billam and Harvey Troupe joined to form the rhythm section, Billam also providing lead guitar. The new lineup was completed with the arrival of respected keyboardist Tim Rice (unrelated to the theater screenwriter of the same name). This lineup recorded the first side of the album "Autumn grass", released in 1971. Again, the album consisted of one side of classical variations, plus a composition by Rice, and a long side suite. The track "Autumn grass" was written by modern composer Patrie Standford specifically for the group. Interestingly, it was actually recorded by the group's first lineup before they split, the album cover listing the former band members as "guest musicians". In addition to Schwarcz's wonderful improvisations, the piece is particularly notable for its length. At over 26 minutes, it's one of the longest tracks (but by no means the longest) to appear on one side of an LP. This resulted in the need for some compression of the recording, a factor that will hopefully one day be resolved by a remastering of the album for CD.
The band continued to tour after the release of "Autumn grass", but ubiquitous musical differences emerged, and founder Schwarcz decided it was time for him to move on. The remaining members kept the band on for a few more months, but when it became clear that their efforts were futile, they broke up.
Yoel Schwarcz became a studio musician and sound engineer, touring with Henry Cow, among others. He has had stints living and working in France and the UK, being involved in a wide range of sound-related projects. He retired from this job in early 2006 and bought a small farm in the Loire valley, where he is still active in the field of music and art.
