Mais uma boa banda nestes dias difíceis que o mundo enfrenta. Estou falando da banda grega Bazooka que lançou seu mais novo álbum no dia 21 de outubro de 2022. Esta eu não conhecia, até o Stratos Psilos entrar em contato por e-mail e nos enviar o material (muito obrigado!). Gostei bastante do som desses caras!
Esta banda de quatro membros é originária de Volos, Grécia, mas mudou-se para Atenas, formando o núcleo da nova cena underground de psych-rock junto com outras bandas, como Acid Baby Jesus e Komodina 3. Desde então, eles fizeram várias turnês pela Europa e nos Estados Unidos. Sua música pode ser descrita como psicodélica e muito crua, como punk de garagem com um senso único de juventude misturado com vibrações de frustração.

Another good band in these difficult days that the world faces. I'm talking about the Greek band Bazooka who released their newest album on the 21st of October 2022. I didn't know this one, until Stratos Psilos got in touch by email and sent us the material (thanks!). I really liked the sound of these guys!
This four-piece band is originally from Volos, Greece, but relocated to Athens, comprising the core of the new underground psych-rock scene along with other bands, such as Acid Baby Jesus and Komodina 3. Since then, they have toured Europe several times and around the United States. Their music could be described as psychedelic and very raw, like garage punk with a unique sense of youth mixed with frustration vibes.
"They are so intense and frenzied that you'd think a wrecking ball has come alive as a psych-rock band. Bazooka melds 1960s mini skirt swinging melodies with manic rock'n'roll riffs and desert acid psychedelia, pushing boundaries beyond volume (going up to eleven!). They're gory sweet though: imagine The Beach Boys writing a Stooges garage tune while selling their soul to the devil. Bazooka's sound is like a fast, rickety but also exciting rollercoaster, loud and distorted, mind-boggling and ear-tingling - and that is definitely not for the faint of heart".

A banda Ypsilon foi um projeto de Lucas Sideras formado em 1977, na França. A banda era formada por Lucas Sideras (bateria, voz - da Aphrodite's Child), Dimitris Katakouzinos (baixo, voz - da Axis) e Lakis Vlavianos (teclados). A banda lançou "Metro music man" no mesmo ano, pela Phillips. O álbum vendeu 75.000 cópias.
A banda também forneceu uma base musical para o filme "Max pechas marce pas sur met lacets!" e apareceu em algumas compilações da época. Após o lançamento do álbum, Katakouzinos saiu e Sideras assumiu os vocais principais, enquanto o novo baterista e baixista entraram no grupo por um breve período, antes que Ypsilon desaparecesse.

The band Ypsilon was a project by Lucas Sideras formed in 1977, in France. The band consisted of Lucas Sideras (drums, vocals - from Aphrodite's Child), Dimitris Katakouzinos (bass, vocals - from Axis) and Lakis Vlavianos (keyboards). The band released "Metro music man" the same year on Phillips. The album sold 75,000 copies.
The band also provided a musical basis for the movie "Max pechas marce pas sur met laces!" and appeared in some compilations at the time. After the album's release, Katakouzinos left and Sideras took over lead vocals, while the new drummer and bassist joined the group for a brief period, before Ypsilon disappeared.

Voltando com a divulgação dos nossos artistas contemporâneos, o blog apresenta hoje para aqueles que já conhecem e para aqueles que ainda não conhecem, o excelente trabalho da dupla Yiagos Hairetis (de Creta - alaúde, vocal) e Maria-Christina Harper (de Londres - harpa) que, pela primeira vez juntos colaboraram para produzir um dueto dinâmico e inesperado. A dupla reúne a música tradicional de Creta e a cena musical jazz de vanguarda de Londres. A mestre harpista Maria-Christina Harper e o tocador de alaúde Υiagos Hairetis criam uma dupla original que combina a cena musical contemporânea de Londres com a tradição musical de Creta.
Hairetis-Harper lançou seu álbum de estréia "Draft"pelo selo Same Difference Music (data de lançamento: 7 de dezembro de 2020). O registro está disponível em LP e digitalmente em todas as principais plataformas. Hairetis-Harper has released their debut album "Draft" via Same Difference Music label (release date: 7 December 2020). The record is available on LP and digitally on all major platforms. The record was written a year after their initial musical acquaintance when their improvisations took the form of complete tracks and it was recorded at Suono Studio by Coti K. who also did the mastering and at the Music Art Lab by Nikos Asimakis. In the seven tracks of the record, the two musicians masterfully combine the sounds of the two instruments and their musical influences, approaching the Cretan tradition in many ways and creating their own distinct sound.
Yiagos Hairetis got involved in music at a very young age, picking up the lute and other traditional Cretan instruments. His upbringing in Anogia, Crete, home of legendary musicians of Cretan music like Psarantonis and Nikos Xylouris coincided with him listening to classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath which influenced him to develop his unique style of playing the lute.
Maria-Christina Harper is an award winning, London based, experimental electric harp player who creates compositions using loop, wah and distortion pedal effects. She is the first prize winner of the Wales International Harp Competition (2010) performing her own compositions on the electric harp. Maria-Christina studied the harp with an entrance scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music.
The duo has appeared in prestigious venues and festivals in Greece and Europe. They toured Belgium and the Netherlands in October 2019 appearing in the historical venue Vera in Groningen, Worm in Rotterdam, Occi in Amsterdam and Art-base in Brussels.

Em 1971, eles lançaram seu álbum de estréia "Ela ela/Osasnna", que apresentou a sua opinião sobre um padrão folclórico grego do mesmo título. Similarly to their better-known countrymen, Aphrodite's Child, Axis were a Greek band, who moved to France, because of the right-wing regime in their motherland. The band was formed in 1970 by multiinstrumentalists Dimitris Katakouzinous and Demis Visvikis. In 1971, they released their debut album "Ela ela/Osasnna", which featured their take on a Greek folk standard of the same title. The work was heavily inspired by the contemporary psychedelic pop. The 1972 year marked the release of their self-titled album. One year later, Axis released another album by the name "Axis" which was radically different than all their previous efforts, only to break up soon after. The band's sound is characterized by rich instrumental layers, professional musicianship, and exceptionally clever detailing. The instrumental abilities of Axis' members really deserve a mention. Demis Visvikis's keyboards play a crucial role in the band's sound. He goes from Thelonious Monk-inspired jazz on grand piano, to bulldozer-like fuzz organ, very much in the vein of Dave Stewart, to ambient Mellotron parts. Chris Stassinopoulos' guitar playing is versatile as well. He finds himself comfortable playing heavy rhythm guitar riffs and jazz guitar solos alike. These are supported by a very competent rhythm section of Dimitris Katakouzinos on bass, who is capable of phenomenal grooves and George Hadjiathanassiou on drums, who keeps up very well with the band's dynamic style. There are ten tracks on "Axis" and I could easily say that every single one has its own distinct style. There is, however, a sort of inexplicable link between them that makes them sound alike and prevents the release from sounding inconsistent for that matter. The pieces go from hard rock-fueled "Waiting a long time", to the ambient "Sewers down inside" free-jazz inspired In short, the band makes great use of their record time, not limiting themselves to only one style. Throughout its four-year career, Axis managed to release three albums. Their self-titled work from 1973 is their last and definitely their most accomplished effort. Its main characteristics are enormous eclecticism and near-to-flawless musicianship. Highly recommended!!!

HISTÓRIA Bem, a história da banda começa quando Atanasios Alatas (guitarra rítmica, violão) e Christos Vlahakis (bateria, percussão), ambos ex-membros de outra banda grega Frog's Eye (banda de rock local em Agios Fanuris), se mudaram para Sepolia e juntos com Marios Jamalakis (baixo, vozes) e Nick Dounavis (solo de guitarra) e decidiu tocar seu próprio rock original, diferente de outras bandas na Grécia. Essas quatro pessoas combinam seus pontos fortes e criam a The 4 Levels of Existence. SOBRE O NOME DO GRUPO (somente os gregos provavelmente poderiam dar o nome ao grupo) "Os 4 níveis de existência" é uma categoria filosófica. Foi expresso por Aristóteles, depois capturado por seu seguidor Tomás de Aquino e, com algumas modificações, sobreviveu com segurança até os dias de hoje. Tomás de Aquino é um monge da ordem dominicana, o mais proeminente representante do escolasticismo maduro. Ele considerou ser o primeiro dos estados reais. Em tudo, de acordo com o filósofo, há tanto quanto relevância nele. Ele destacou quatro níveis de beingness: certeza externa das coisas (minerais, elementos), "alma vegetal" - coisas que têm conveniência intrínseca, e forma aparece como a causa final (plantas), coisas cuja forma é a causa real (animais) e finalmente, no quarto nível, a forma não depende da matéria (espírito, alma racional). Seguindo Aristóteles, distinguindo o real e o potencial, Tomás de Aquino considera ser o primeiro dos estados reais.
Em tudo, há tanto quanto relevância. Assim, ele identifica 4 níveis de existência das coisas de acordo com sua relevância:
1. Forma - a certeza externa das coisas (minerais, não elementos orgânicos). 2. Forma - a causa final das coisas (plantas). 3. Forma - a causa efetiva (animais). 4. A forma em si é independente da matéria (espírito, mente, alma racional).
A alma racional humana não morre com a morte do corpo. Ela é "auto-existente". As almas dos animais não são auto-existentes, não têm pensamento e vontade. Todas as ações dos animais são realizadas com a ajuda do corpo - as almas dos animais perecem com o corpo, a alma humana é imortal.

in 1974, at the height of political events in Greece.

HISTORY Well, the band's history begins when Atanasios Alatas (rhythm guitar, guitar) and Christos Vlahakis (drums, percussion), both former members of another Greek band Frog's Eye (local rock band in Agios Fanuris), moved to Sepolia and together with Marios Jamalakis (bass, voices) and Nick Dounavis (guitar solo) and decided to play their own original rock, unlike other bands in Greece. These four people combine their strengths and create The 4 Levels of Existence. The group started rehearsing and performing live (mainly in local cinemas, as was usual in the Greeks at the time), and finally managed to win the third place in a Cyprus music competition organized by the National Radio and Television Foundation (EIRT) in 1975 . The following year, when new guitarist Nick Grapsas took the place of the previous Nick, The 4 Levels of Existence reached its peak. They entered psychedelia, with their sensitivity and dynamism, and began to write texts in Greek. 1976 was for them the best (and at the same time the saddest) year - the group was invited to make an album for Venus Records, a small record company specialized - curiously - in Greek folk and popular music. However, it was a unique opportunity, and the band did not lose: on January 5 and 6, 1976, their first and only album was recorded at the legendary Columbia Studio in Athens.
In just 10 hours, the recording was done after two short sessions: first all the instrumental tracks were placed, and then the vocals were added. After the release of this album, they gave their only concert and became a legend of Greek rock. THE ALBUM Now, about music: "The 4 Levels of Existence" is an incredibly psychedelic and coded album. A really cute monster with great guitar touches, melancholic lyrics (sung in Greek) and magnificent melodies. The guitar work is excellent and very poor, which gives the album a heavy taste, but after a few auditions, you understand ... hey, that's exactly the style of the band! This is a rather naive, rustic, but beautiful and unique album!!! A very unique combination of various elements, the recording is capable of transmitting a significantly broad, musical and emotional range of adolescent aggression and heavy guitar riffs ("Metamorphic") to emotional explosions ("The fool's pipe") and passages melodic sounds that give off a nostalgic feeling of youth. melancholy and lyrical ("Untitled", "Disappointment"). The original vinyl release of 1976 had the cover created by Athanasios Alatas. Soon after the release of the album, the band broke up. However, his only recording will follow his own incredible course, becoming a popular subject among collectors and considered one of the rarest records of Greek rock. In addition, in an incredible turnaround in events, American rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z used Alat guitar riff ("Someday in Athens") as a model for the hit "Run this town", which Rihanna sang, winning two Grammy awards in 2010 . After subsequent releases on vinyl and CD, the album "The 4 Levels of Existence" was recently reissued on a beautiful 180 gram vinyl on a small independent record label, Anazitisi Records, specializing in psychedelic and progressive rock, blues and jazz records from the 1960s and 1970 (I must say here that, when I used Facebook, I had a brief "friendship" with one of the members of Anazitisi Records - Nick Karathanassis - who proved to be a very attentive person, as well as having a great musical taste. Anazitisi Records always seeks to bring the best of psychedelic and progressive music to people who enjoy a good and rare sound).
Many consider the best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded. As the group leader Athanasios Alatas said: "Thanks to Nick's musical pursuit, Mario's sensitivity, Christos insanity and my thoughts, we created many songs, each characterized by psychedelic musical sounds, Greek letters and guitar solos monumental". ABOUT THE NAME OF THE GROUP (only the Greeks could probably name the group) "The 4 levels of existence" is a philosophical category. It was expressed by Aristotle, then captured by his follower Thomas Aquinas and, with some modifications, survived safely to this day. Thomas Aquinas is a monk of the Dominican order, the most prominent representative of mature scholasticism. He considered it to be the first of the real states. In everything, according to the philosopher, there is as much relevance in it. He emphasized four levels of beingness: external certainty of things (minerals, elements), "plant soul" - things that have intrinsic convenience, and form appears as the ultimate cause (plants), things whose form is the real cause (animals) and finally, on the fourth level, form does not depend on matter (spirit, rational soul). For Thomas Aquinas, matter is pure potentiality. This is the weakest form of being that passively perceives the impact from the outside. Nothing formless material exists.
God - the highest principle - is to be himself. Thomas Aquinas distinguishes being (existence) and essence (only in God, being and essence coincide), but does not oppose them and, following Aristotle, emphasizes their common root. Entities have an independent being, unlike accidents (properties, qualities) that exist only because of the substances. Hence the distinction between substantive forms and accidental forms is derived. The first communicates everything, a simple being, the second - only qualities. Following Aristotle, distinguishing between the real and the potential, Thomas Aquinas considers to be the first of the real states.
In everything, there is as much relevance. Thus he identifies 4 levels of existence of things according to their relevance:
1. Form - the external certainty of things (minerals, not organic elements). 2. Form - the final cause of things (plants). 3. Form - the effective cause (animals). 4. Form itself is independent of matter (spirit, mind, rational soul).
The human rational soul does not die with the death of the body. It is "self-existent". The souls of animals are not self-existent, they have no thought and will. All animal actions are performed with the help of the body - the souls of animals perish with the body, the human soul is immortal.
"Mind reason" is the highest among human abilities: a reasonable definition of the will is the ability to distinguish between good and evil. Like Aristotle, Thomas sees in the will a practical mind, that is, a mind directed to action, not to knowledge. True individuals are individuals. Beginning with God, which is a pure act of being and ending with the least of created entities, each being has relative autonomy, which decreases as it moves downward.
