HISTÓRIA
Ian Lloyd (nascido em Lloyd Buonconsiglio, 1947, Seattle) e Michael Brown (nascido em Michael Lookofsky, 25 de abril de 1949, Brooklyn) foram apresentados por seus pais, Peter Buonconsiglio e Harry Lookofsky, dois velhos amigos que trabalharam juntos por anos como violinistas de sessões. Lloyd cantava há anos e atraíra gravações locais usando o nome Lloyd London. Brown já havia experimentado um sucesso substancial no mainstream, tendo liderado e se apresentado com seu grupo The Left Banke, que alcançou as paradas americanas com os singles "Walk away Renee" (nº 5, 1966) e "Pretty ballerina"(nº 15, 1967).
Os dois começaram fazendo versões das músicas da The Beatles. Eles recrutaram os nova-iorquinos Love and Madey, nomearam a banda Stories e localizaram uma gravadora interessada, a Kama Sutra Records. HISTORY
Ian Lloyd (born Lloyd Buonconsiglio, 1947, Seattle) and Michael Brown (born Michael Lookofsky, April 25, 1949, Brooklyn) were introduced by their parents, Peter Buonconsiglio and Harry Lookofsky, two old friends who worked together for years as violinists of sessions. Lloyd had been singing for years and had attracted local recordings under the name Lloyd London. Brown had already experienced substantial success in the mainstream, having led and performed with his group The Left Banke, which reached the American charts with the singles "Walk away Renee" (No. 5, 1966) and "Pretty ballerina" (No. 15, 1967).
The two started making versions of The Beatles' songs. They recruited New Yorkers Love and Madey, named the band Stories and located an interested label, Kama Sutra Records. In 1972 the band released their first self-titled album, followed by the single "I'm coming home" (nº 42, 1972).
Afterwards, the band started working on their second LP with producer Eddie Kramer - "About us" (1973). After the album's release, Brown left the band to pursue another project.
"About us" did relatively well, but initially did not include the group's new single, "Brother Louie". The song about a black girl and her white boyfriend had been a hit by Hot Chocolate in the UK earlier that year. Once released as Stories' fifth single, it became a huge hit, reaching No. 1 in the United States. The single spent two weeks at number one and remained on the Billboard chart for 18 weeks, with an RIAA gold album awarded on August 22, 1973.
"All of a sudden," Lloyd explained to Triad's Russel Wiener, "we had a big hit with a song that did not represent our music and the direction we were trying to go in. I didn't think it would affect me that much, but it did. Consequently, I decided that I had to remove myself from that, so that I could come back and show what I really can do".
A new version of the LP was released, including the hit single, and the album started selling well. In some cases, old copies of the LP, were shipped inside album covers that did list the single.
Lloyd stayed with Stories for another album - "Traveling underground" (1973) - before leaving the group. Bassist Kenny Aaronson (born April 14, 1952, Brooklyn) (ex-Dust), who played bass on the cover of "Brother Louie", and keyboardist Ken Bichel (born 1945, Detroit) came in to fill the void. The new group made the Billboard Hot 100 with "Mammy Blue" (nº 50, 1973) and "If it feels good, do it", which was a cover of the band Climax (nº 88, 1974). Before the group split, Love left and was replaced by Richie Ranno.
Since then, Lloyd has recorded several solo albums and worked in the studio for Foreigner, Fotomaker and Peter Frampton. Lloyd was also one of the first artists to present songs written by Bryan Adams, which Adams would later record, which led to the formation of Fast Forward in 1984, which included Lloyd and several other people directly or indirectly associated with Adams. The resulting album, "Living in fiction", featured several of Adams' songs. Brown went on to form The Beckies, another band influenced by The Beatles. Love reappeared in the early 1980s as Landscape. The cover of "Brother Louie" is used as the theme for the American TV series "Louie", starring Louis CK.
Rolling Stone praised Lloyd's compositions, saying that he exhibited "a lyricist's most essential gift - the ability to produce a verbal approximation of the music's ambiance".
In addition to his own projects, Ian Lloyd has been part of the Social Hero group in New York since 1998, performing alongside his son, vocalist David Lloyd. He contributed vocals for Social Hero's first album, "The famous", released in 2009.
Lloyd continues to reside in New York City. His band, Ian Lloyd Band, is composed of Ian Lloyd, David Lloyd (keyboards and backing vocals), Matt Grossman (guitar), Dan Natelli (guitar), Antti Janhunen (bass) and Jon Ihle (drums). In addition to his own material, his repertoire consists of songs from Stories and LLoyd's solo catalog.
On March 18, 2015, it was announced that Ian Lloyd would join The Left Banke, which included George Cameron, on a 2015 joint tour of North America. The original lead singer of The Left Banke, Steve Martin Caro, never returned to the band's version for the tour, as announced. Lloyd presented a mix of solo and classic material from his time with Stories.
