In the late 1960s early 1970s, the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) had one of the most active music scenes in the USA. Copperhead (later named Minnesoda by Capitol Records not to be confused with John Cipollina's Copperhead) when not performing In local ballrooms, also worked six nights a week in the local clubs, including being the "house band" at The Depot, later known as First Avenue (model for the club in Prince's movie "Purple rain").

Managed by Marsh Productions, Marsh Edelstein - and Tom Cassidy - the group was courted by many well known producers. One LP recording, "Minnesoda" was released on Capitol Records in 1972. The album was produced by Bob Johnston, known for his work with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Simon & Garfunkel and many other artists. Trompeter Don Lehnhoff previously played with Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, and trumpeter Ed Shaw, interestingly, was the bassist for The Monks in the 1960s. The group's musical - approach was based on an influence of jazz mixed with progressive rock and funk. In contrast to popular song lyrics of the day the "Minnesodans" used music as a philosophical statement, as if saying, "Anything worth doing, is worth doing to excess". Some people claimed it was a musical painting in the style of surrealism - breaking the musical norms of the times. As an example, four lines of John Elm's vocal on, "Rainbows" comes from the Lewis Carrol poem "Jabberwocky":

"Twas brillig, and the slithy tove.

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe

All mimsy were the borogoves

And the mome raths outgrabe".

Hearing this, the normal audience reaction was a puzzled, "What the was that about?" (you can fill in the blank)

One record producer in Nashville wanted Copperhead/Minnesoda to become a studio band and back other well-known vocalists. The group, instead, insisted on owning and performing their own music. They were known to many local, fledgling twin city artists of the time. Ironically, it was during this time that a young teenager named Roger Nelson (14 years - later known as Prince) assisted the group's roadie, "Gunk" (Dave Gunderson) in setting up stage equipment for a couple of teen-age attended shows. It is during this time that Minnesoda records material for their second album. However, for reasons that are still unknown, the band broke up in 1974. The album released in 2019, simply called "1970's" is a compilation that presents us with the songs they wrote and recorded at that time and that, as was said earlier, would be the material for their second album. "1970's" leads us to think that the band still had a lot of creativity to explore and show.
