Zikkurat foi uma banda tcheca formada na virada de 1977 e 1978. Os membros fundadores foram: Jiří Křivka, Tomáš Havrda, Vilém Čok e Luděk Vejvoda. Zikkurat foi influenciada pelo jazz rock e funk, as bandas do movimento Rock in Oposition, o punk (no final de 1978 eles tocaram covers da Sex Pistols, Stranglers, Ramones e outras) e new wave. Uma performance inovadora para a banda foi no 9º Prague Jazz Days em 3 de novembro de 1979, que "quebrou" com seu punk (Zikkurat foi uma das pioneiras do punk checoslovaco). Com base nas idéias de Frank Zappa, Jiří Křivka direcionou o conceito do grupo à absoluta liberdade de expressão.
Desde o início, o trabalho da Zikkurat recebeu uma posição alternativa, jazz-rock-industrial, tocada em paralelo com o punk. Zikkurat era, de fato, um broto muito especial da cena alternativa tcheca, muitas vezes suas composições, com uma alta parcela de improvisação, excederam meia hora. Seus shows eram caracterizados pela ferocidade e vigor. O grupo também utilizou instrumentos não tradicionais (mangueiras para aspiradores, blocos de poliestireno e sintetizadores de produção doméstica), efeitos pirotécnicos e trajes bizarros.
Em 1981, a banda entrou em séria crise após uma oferta para completar a formação do grupo Pražský Výběr, ou substituir um deles deixando Ondřej Soukup (Čok e Křivka gradualmente recebem a oferta, mas ambos a rejeitam). No entanto, Vilém Čok finalmente aceitou a oferta devido ao futuro incerto e a Zikkurat se desintegra após uma intervenção policial preparada em Vrchovinách (Highlands), em 2 de julho de 1981. Křivka e Zajpt ainda tentam continuar como uma dupla, mas a idéia só durou até o final do ano (álbum ainda não lançado, "Všechno je jinak"). A formação original da Zikkurat só se reúniu uma vez, após a sua dissolução, por ocasião de um concerto memorial em março de 1982.

Zikkurat was a Czech band formed at the turn of 1977 and 1978. The founding members were: Jiří Křivka, Tomáš Havrda, Vilém Čok and Luděk Vejvoda. Zikkurat was influenced by jazz rock and funk, Rock in Opposition bands, punk (in late 1978 it played covers of Sex Pistols, Stranglers, Ramones and others) and new wave. An innovative performance for the band was at the 9th Prague Jazz Days on November 3, 1979, which "broke" with its punk (Zikkurat was one of the pioneers of Czechoslovak punk). Based on Frank Zappa's ideas, Jiří Křivka directed the group's concept to absolute freedom of expression.
From the outset, Zikkurat's work has been given an alternative position, jazz-rock-industrial, played in parallel with punk. Zikkurat was, in fact, a very special bud of the Czech alternative scene, often his compositions, with a high portion of improvisation, exceeded half an hour. Its shows were characterized by ferocity and vigor. The group also used non-traditional instruments (vacuum hoses, polystyrene blocks and home-made synthesizers), pyrotechnic effects and bizarre costumes.
In 1981, the band went into serious crisis after an offer to complete the Pražský Výběr group formation, or replace one of them leaving Ondřej Soukup (Čok and Křivka gradually receive the offer, but both reject it). However, Vilém Čok finally accepted the offer due to the uncertain future and Zikkurat disintegrates after a police intervention prepared in Vrchovinách (Highlands), on July 2, 1981. Křivka and Zajpt are still trying to continue as a pair, but the idea only lasted until the end of the year (album not yet released, "Všechno je jinak"). The original formation of the Zikkurat only met once after its dissolution on the occasion of a memorial concert in March 1982.
