Black Sugar (Psychedelic Jazz Funk Rock {Peru})

A Black Sugar, idéia de Victor "Coco" Salazar e Miguel "Chino" Figueroa, foi formada em 1969 com o nome de Los Far Fen, principalmente porque o grupo tinha um amplificador Farfisa e um Fender como seu único equipamento de amplificação eletrônica.

Los Far Fen gravou três discos de 45 rpm com seis melodias: composições originais, melodias pop e baladas. Três dessas faixas, mostram os arranjos talentosos de "Coco" Salazar e os inspirados solos de órgão e teclado de "Chino" Figueroa; também determinou a futura direção musical do grupo e sua habilidade natural para tocar funk latino. Em 1970 o grupo recebeu o nome de Black Sugar por Jaime Delgado Aparicio, pianista e arranjador de jazz que na época era diretor artístico da Sono Radio, gravadora peruana.

Delgado Aparicio, reconhecendo o talento dos jovens músicos, deu ao grupo a oportunidade de gravar uma longa peça em 1971. Composições originais como "Too late", "Viajecito" e "The looser" tornaram este LP um best-seller imediato.

O álbum "Black Sugar" foi vendido em toda a América do Sul e houve um lançamento do LP nos EUA por uma gravadora de Miami. O sucesso da Black Sugar não foi devido à sorte ou ao marketing. Seus membros eram alguns dos melhores, senão os melhores, jovens músicos do Peru. O arranjador, "Coco" Salazar também era um guitarrista fantástico; Miguel "Chino" Figueroa foi o compositor de quase todas as canções originais da Black Sugar, e além de tocar teclado, era também um inspirado instrumentista de órgão; Jose Cruz foi um dos jovens bateristas de jazz mais promissores; é difícil não mencionar o resto dos músicos, músicos como Roberto Valdez, Luis Calixto, Antonio Ginocchio, etc... merecem uma descrição extensa de suas habilidades.

O último músico que gostaria de citar é Coco Lagos, rei da percussão latina no Peru dos anos 70, sua forma de tocar está presente em todas as canções. Black Sugar gravou um segundo LP em 1972 e sua última gravação, de 45 rpm em 1978. O segundo LP traz uma composição mais original que o primeiro, também a execução e os solos mostram maturidade musical. Faixas como "Fuego", "Kathy", "Checan", "All your love", o lindo arranjo para "Don’ t you worry about a thing", de Stevie  Wonder, etc.... fazem deste LP uma jóia.

Definitivamente, seu estilo é único, com influências de grupos como Tower of Power, Blood Sweat and Tears e Chicago misturadas com um sabor funk latino. No final, a música fala por si, Black Sugar era uma banda de funk latino de classe mundial.

Black Sugar, the brainchild of Victor "Coco" Salazar and Miguel "Chino" Figueroa, was formed in 1969 under the name Los Far Fen, mainly because the group had a Farfisa and a Fender amplifiers as their only electronic amplification equipment.

Los Far Fen recorded three 45 rpm records with six tunes:original compositions, pop tunes and ballads. Three of those tracks, show the talented arrangements of "Coco" Salazar and the inspired organ and keyboard solos of "Chino" Figueroa; also determined the future musical direction of the group and their natural ability to play Latin funk. In 1970 the group was given the name of Black Sugar by Jaime Delgado Aparicio, a jazz piano player and arranger that at the time was the artistic director of Sono Radio, a Peruvian label.

Delgado Aparicio, recognizing the talent of the young musicians, gave the group an opportunity to record a long play in 1971. Original compositions like "Too late", "Viajecito" and "The looser" made this LP an immediate best seller. The album "Black Sugar" was sold in all South America and there was a release of the LP in USA by a Miami based label.

The success of Black Sugar was not due to luck or marketing. Their members were some of the finest , if not the best, young musician from Peru. The arranger, "Coco" Salazar was also a fantastic guitar player; Miguel "Chino" Figueroa was the composer of almost all the original songs by Black Sugar, besides playing keyboards, he was also an inspired organ player; Jose Cruz was one of the most promising young jazz drummers; it is hard not to mention the rest of the musicians, players like Roberto Valdez, Luis Calixto, Antonio Ginocchio, etc... deserve an extensive description of their abilities.

The last musician I want to mention is Coco Lagos, king of Latin percussion in Peru in the 70’ s, his playing is featured in all the songs. Black Sugar recorded a second LP in 1972 and their last recording, one 45 rpm in 1978. The second LP features more original composition than the first one, also the playing and the soloing show musical maturity. Tracks like "Fuego", "Kathy", "Checan", "All your love", the beautiful arrangement to Stevie Wonder's "Don’ t you worry about a thing", etc... make this LP a jewel.

Definitely their style is unique, with influences from groups like Tower of Power, Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago mixed with a Latin funk flavor. At the end, the music speaks by itself, Black Sugar was a world class latin funk band.
