The Animated Egg was a studio-only group that released this one self-titled album of psychedelic instrumentals in 1968. The renowned Los Angeles session guitarist Jerry Cole was the man behind the band. His guitar fuzzy leads dominate the arrangements: with some 12-string electric guitar lines, surf music and Latin music. Cole also wrote the material, and though he was unsure of the other personnel when asked about the LP many years later, possible accompanists include Edgar Lamar and Don Dexter on drums, Tommy Lee and Glenn Cass on bass, Billy Joe Hastings and Norm Cass on guitar, and Billy Preston on organ.

Despite the high instrumental talent involved, The Animated Egg seems to have been just a studio project created with the intention of capitalizing on the fashion for psychedelic sounds. Cole played on several other similar "psychsploitation" LPs in the same era credited to different groups: The Generation Gap, T. Swift & The Electric Bag, The Projection Company, and The Stone Canyon Rock Group. All this can be heard on The Animated Egg CD compilation "Guitar freakout" (MP3/FLAC). Cole also played on records by The Byrds, Lee Hazlewood, Gene Clark, and Dick Dale.

"The Animated Egg" features some very impressive sound effects, and some killer tracks that have become cult classics: especially "Sock it my way", a dreamy feast of mesmerizing, piercing melodies all bound together by a steady, hypnotic rhythm. This album is now a bit of a hard to find collectors record that commands ever increasing prices.

The releases by Flash Records (1998) and Walhalla Records (2004), both in CD format, are considered unofficial releases. In 2020, Music On Vinyl label released on a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on orange marbled coloured vinyl (MOV LP 1993) - and in CD format by Music On CD label (MOC CD 13954) - being the first official release of this album.
