Public Foot the Roman - Public Foot the Roman - 1973 (Progressive Rock {UK})

Uma banda de rock progressivo obscura e há muito esquecida do Reino Unido, Public Foot the Roman, no entanto, era popular o suficiente para lançar um álbum auto-intitulado em 1973, tanto no Reino Unido quanto nos EUA (Sovereign Records no Reino Unido, Capitol nos EUA). Além disso, muitas vezes eles eram vistos tocando em faculdades e apareciam nos programas de rádio mais externos da época.

A banda teve algumas mudanças, mas a mais conhecida foi: Dag Small (teclados e vocais), o enigmicamente chamado Ward (baixo), Sean Byrne (vocal e guitarra), Greg Knowles (guitarra) e Jamie Lane (bateria e vocais). O grupo eventualmente se transformou em The Movies, que desenvolveu as tendências de rock artístico da Public Foot the Roman e estava quase à beira de um grande avanço quando o punk rock mudou o clima musical e matou todas as chances de sucesso.

"As pessoas costumam perguntar

de onde veio o nome da banda. Os

membros da banda estavam andando

pelo campo perto de Cambridge e encontraram

uma placa antiga que originalmente dizia: 'Public

Footpath to the Roman Road' ("Caminho

público para a estrada romana"). No

entanto, as letras 'path', 'to' e 'road'

desapareceram com o tempo, por

isso escolheram 'Public Foot the

Roman' como seu nome".

An obscure and long forgotten progressive rock band from the UK, Public Foot the Roman nevertheless were popular enough to released one self titled album in 1973 in both the UK and USA (Sovereign Records in the UK, Capitol in the USA). In addition they were often seen playing at colleges and were featured on the more outward looking radio shows of the time.

The band did have some line up changes but the best known was: Dag Small (keyboards and vocals), the enigmatically named Ward (guitar), Sean Byrne (vocals and guitar), Greg Knowles (guitar) and Jamie Lane (drums and vocals). The group eventually transormed itself into The Movies, who developed the Public Foot the Roman's art rock tendenacies and were almost on the verge of a breakthrough when punk rock changed the musical climate and killed any chances of success.

"People often ask where the

band's name came from. Members

of the band were walking through

the countryside near Cambridge and

they came upon an old sign which originally

said: 'Public Footpath to the Roman Road'.

However, the letters 'path', 'to' and 'road'

had disappeared with time, hence they

chose 'Public Foot the Roman'

as their name".
