Livin' Blues foi um grupo de

HISTÓRIA

A banda foi fundada em 1967 por Ted Oberg. Depois de algumas mudanças de formação, o single "Murphy McCoy" (escrito por George Kooymans ) foi gravado em 1968, ao lado de Oberg Cesar Zuiderwijk (bateria), Gerard Strötbaum (baixo), Nicko Christiansen e John Lagrand. Os dois últimos foram anteriormente o duo de blues Indiscrimination. Neste line-up, a banda forneceu suporte para Fleetwood Mac, em fevereiro de 1969 (performances em Rijen, Rotterdam e Amsterdam, entre outras).

Depois de um segundo single ("You better watch yourself", de Sonny Boy) para a gravadora Philips, Strötbaum é substituído por Henk Smitskamp, que já havia tocado em Willy & Giants, The Motions e After Tea. Com a nova formação - novamente sob o gerenciamento de produção da Jaap Eggermont - o LP "Hell's session" é gravado. Em 1971, uma tragédia ocorre na vida de Dick Beekman, que é forçado a deixar o grupo. Ele é substituído por Johnny Lejeune (ex-Blues Corporation, Jasper Mule). Com ele é gravado o álbum "Bamboozle", do qual "L.B. boogie" se torna um sucesso internacional.

Embora o famoso produtor inglês Mike Vernon (John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Focus) tenha tomado conta do grupo em 1972, após a transição da Phonogram para a gravadora Ariola, os problemas do baterista continuam. Arjen Kamminga toca bateria no LP "Rocking at the Tweed Mill", mas ele tem que deixar a banda alguns meses depois com problemas nas costas. Após a intervenção de Vernon, Kenny Lamb, do grupo de blues inglês Jellybread, se torna o novo baterista. Um ano depois, em "Blue breeze" (produzido por John Sonneveld), a seção rítmica da antiga Shocking Blue foi substituída pelo baixista André Reijnen (ex-Brainbox) e pelo baterista Jacob van Heiningen (ex-Galaxis). Este LP é o best-seller da banda e, especialmente, a popularidade na Polônia estava subindo a grandes alturas.
Na Holanda, no entanto, está indo para baixo e, em 1978, a banda está mesmo sem contrato de gravação. Oberg continua mexendo com vários músicos até 1980. Livin' Blues was a blues rock

group from The Hague. By 1970, the band,

along with Cuby+Blizzards, were at the top

of the Dutch blues world. The fixed core

consisted of Ted Oberg (guitar), John Lagrand

(harmonica) and Nicko Christiansen (vocals,

born Dominicus Christiaan Jansen). The

group manager was Ted's mother,

Françoise Oberg.

STORY

The band was founded in 1967 by Ted Oberg. After some lineup changes, the single "Murphy McCoy" (written by George Kooymans) was recorded in 1968, alongside Oberg Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums), Gerard Strötbaum (bass), Nicko Christiansen and John Lagrand. The last two were formerly the blues duo Indiscrimination. In this line-up, the band provided support for Fleetwood Mac in February 1969 (performances in Rijen, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, among others).

After a second single ("You better watch yourself" by Sonny Boy) for Philips record label, Strötbaum is replaced by Henk Smitskamp, ​​who had previously played on Willy & Giants, The Motions and After Tea. With the new lineup - again under Jaap Eggermont's production management - the LP "Hell's session" is recorded. It's a very strong album that can stand up to comparison with albums by other white blues bands like John Mayall & Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac and Cuby+Blizzards.

In 1970 Cesar Zuiderwijk departs for Golden Earring and Henk Smitskamp departs for Sandy Coast. His substitutes are, respectively, Dick Beekman (former Cuby+Blizzards) and Ruud van Buuren (former Group 1850). Although the band can still be classified as a blues group, progressive rock influences are beginning to reach their second album, "Wang dang doodle". The guitar riff of the title track is reminiscent of Deep Purple's "Black night." An abbreviated version of this song is released as a single and is a modest hit. The success gives the band performances throughout Europe, England and Italy.

In 1971, a tragedy occurs in the life of Dick Beekman, who is forced to leave the group. He is replaced by Johnny Lejeune (former Blues Corporation, Jasper Mule). With it is recorded the album "Bamboozle", of which "L.B. boogie" becomes an international success.

Although famed English producer Mike Vernon (John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Focus) took over the group in 1972, after Phonogram's transition to Ariola, the drummer's troubles remain. Arjen Kamminga plays drums on the "Rockin' at the Tweed Mill" LP, but he has to leave the band a few months later with back problems. Following Vernon's intervention, Kenny Lamb of the English blues group Jellybread becomes the new drummer. It can be heard on the LP "Ram jam Josey", which can hardly be considered a blues album. It seems to be the last record of the golden age of Livin' Blues, because in 1974 the group collapses. John Lagrand leaves for the Water group, Nicko Christiansen for the Himalaya and Ruud van Buuren for Ernie and Shakers.

Ted Oberg feels forced by the contract with Ariola to continue the band. He is therefore the only remnant of Livin' Blues to participate in the late 1974 album "Boogie woogie woman" with singer John Frederiksz (known as George Cash), Michel Driesten on drums, Ronnie Meyes on guitar and Henk Smitskamp on the bass coming from the Shocking Blue. At least that lineup appears on the cover of the photo, because when the band started promoting the single on TV in early 1975, Meyes and Driesten seem to have disappeared and Cor van der Beek (former Shocking Blue drummer) and Paul Vink (former Finch, keyboards). The latter is already missing on LP "Live '75". A year later, in "Blue breeze" (produced by John Sonneveld), the rhythm section of the old Shocking Blue was replaced by bassist André Reijnen (former Brainbox) and drummer Jacob van Heiningen (former Galaxis). This LP is the band's best seller and especially the popularity in Poland was rising to great heights.
In the Netherlands, however, it is going down, and by 1978 the band is even without a record deal. Oberg continues to fuss with various musicians until 1980. So he decides to bring Nicko Christiansen and John Lagrand back, and along with bassist Evert Willemstein and drummer Boris Wassenberg (aka Beau Wassenberg) he again focuses on the blues rock of the previous ten years. .
Livin' Blues is therefore one of the few remaining bands during the Beatnach in The Hague (June 13, 1980) and therefore one of the most professional acts.

Oberg stops Livin' Blues in 1986 after almost twenty years. Christiansen tries again in 1987 with LP "Now" with Joop van Nimwegen (guitar), Aad van Pijlen (bass), Willem vd Wall (guitar), Art Bausch (drums) and veteran John Lagrand.

In 1989 the curtain finally fell for Livin' Blues after the LP "Snakedance". The use of the name then remains a point of discussion between (in particular) Ted Oberg and Nicko Christiansen. Oberg in the 90s simply calls his band Oberg. Christiansen plays at the time in a band called New Livin' Blues and, since 2005, under the name Livin' Blues Xperience (LBX). However, this time without John Lagrand, who dies in June 2005 of a cardiac arrest. In 2012, Livin' Blues Xperience consists of Nicko Christiansen (vocals, saxophone, percussion), Loek van der Knaap (guitar), Jeroen van Niele (bass guitar), Kees van Krugten (drums) and Francois Spannenburg (harmonica). The line-up of the band Oberg in 2012 is Liane Hoogeveen (vocals), Mick Hup (guitar), Nico Heilijgers (bass), Paul Damen (drums) and Ted Oberg (guitar).
