HISTÓRIA
O trio era formado pelo baixista e vocalista John Gustafson, tecladista J. Peter Robinson e Mick Underwood na bateria. Underwood já havia tocado com Ritchie Blackmore na The Outlaws, enquanto Gustafson havia sido membro da Cass and The Casanovas, The Big Three, The Seniors e The Merseybeats. Underwood mais tarde se tornou baterista da Episode Six, e foi acompanhado por Gustafson depois que Roger Glover (e Ian Gillan) saiu para se juntar à Deep Purple. A banda recebeu o nome do professor Bernard Quatermass - um cientista fictício que foi o herói de três seriados de ficção científica produzidos pela BBC Television na década de 1950 - e assinou contrato com a Harvest Records.

Apesar do álbum não ter um bom desempenho nas paradas na época do lançamento, começou a chamar bastante atenção em 1975, quando o guitarrista Ritchie Blackmore fez um cover da música "Black sheep of the family" - original de Chris Farlowe - que foi a primeira faixa a ser gravada pela Rainbow, tendo sido rejeitada para o álbum "Stormbringer" da Deep Purple. Como consequência do interesse revivido, o álbum "Quatermass" foi relançado e vendeu mais 20.000 cópias.
Desde então, ganhou status de cult e recebeu críticas retrospectivas favoráveis. Mike DeGagne deu ao álbum uma classificação de quatro estrelas de cinco no AllMusic. O grupo se separou no início de 1971. Gustafson formou uma nova banda, Hard Stuff (Bullet) com ex-membros da Atomic Rooster.
QUATERMASS II
Em 1994, Underwood e o membro fundador da Deep Purple, Nick Simper, se juntaram a um projeto chamado Quatermass II. Gustafson contribuiu com duas canções em seu álbum, "Long road" (1997), que também envolveu Gary Davis e Bart Foley nas guitarras, com Don Airey nos teclados.

HISTORY
The trio consisted of bass player and vocalist John Gustafson, keyboardist J. Peter Robinson and Mick Underwood on drums. Underwood had previously played with Ritchie Blackmore in The Outlaws, while Gustafson had been a member of Cass and The Casanovas, The Big Three, The Seniors, and The Merseybeats. Underwood later became drummer with Episode Six, and was joined by Gustafson after Roger Glover (and Ian Gillan) left to join Deep Purple. The band took its name from Professor Bernard Quatermass - a fictional scientist who had been the hero of three science fiction serials produced by BBC Television in the 1950s -, and signed to Harvest Records.
The group formed as a power trio with Hammond organ as the main instrument. Its first and only album sold itself through "...compactness, wealth of ideas, forceful lead vocals and complicated arrangements, enriched by pianist Robinson's tasteful use of classical strings which are on display along with spacious keyboard passages at their height in the mold of The Nice". One track, "Laughin' tackle", includes 16 violins, 6 violas, 6 cellos, and 3 double bass, arranged by Robinson, and a drum solo by Underwood - also notable is the non-use of electric guitar on the album. Underwood remained in close contact with Blackmore, and visited Deep Purple in the studio while the band was recording "In rock".
The album was released in May 1970 by Harvest Records, and was produced by the Swedish producer Anders "Henkan" Henriksson.
Despite the album not performing well on the charts at the time of the release, it started to attract considerable attention in 1975, when guitarist Ritchie Blackmore covered the song "Black sheep of the family" - original by Chris Farlowe - which was the first track to be recorded by Rainbow, having been rejected for the Deep Purple album "Stormbringer". As a consequence of the revived interest, the album "Quatermass" was re-released and sold further 20,000 copies.
Since then, it has gained a cult status and has received favorable retrospective reviews. Mike DeGagne has given the album a rating of four stars out of five on AllMusic. He has called "Quatermass" "a must-have for prog rock enthusiasts, especially lovers of the keyboard-dominated style which flourished in the early '70s".
The group split in early 1971. Gustafson formed a new band, Hard Stuff (Bullet) with ex-members of Atomic Rooster.
QUATERMASS II
In 1994, Underwood, and founding Deep Purple member Nick Simper joined in a project called Quatermass II. Gustafson contributed two songs on their album, "Long road" (1997), which also involved Gary Davis and Bart Foley on guitars, with Don Airey on keyboards.
FILES
The files for the 2013' Esoteric Recordings release are all in FLAC format, and will not convert to MP3 format. As you can see, a "CD 02" was included in the album. But, in fact, this "CD 02" does not exist. The release comes with a DVD, mixed in 5.1 surround. I extracted the audios in 5.1 surround and converted them to FLAC format, and created the folder "CD 02" to put these files. The DVD is audio only, with band photo slides.
