P₂O₅ (Heavy/Psych/Progressive Rock {Alemanha})

HISTÓRIA

A P₂O₅ foi fundada em Wendelstein, situada na Francônia ao sul de Nuremberg, em 1970 e tocava hard rock progressivo com elementos místicos. Os quatro membros originais eram colegas de escola de Wendelstein e Nuremberg, nomeadamente Wolfgang Burkhard no piano, Rainer Häuser na guitarra, Helmut Hiebel (nascido em 24/05/1955 em Viersen) no baixo e vocais, e Eddy Lotter (nascido em 05/08/1954 em Nuremberg) na bateria que inventou o nome da banda que deriva das aulas de química de sua escola secundária Veit Stoß em Nuremberg, sendo a fórmula para o pentóxido de fósforo. Está incluído, por exemplo, em potássio - não é, no entanto, um explosivo como foi afirmado erroneamente, mas está apenas latente. A escolha do nome não teve um significado mais profundo. Outro grupo desta área mais tarde copiou essa idéia e se autodenominou H₂SO₄. 

Nossa P₂O₅ começou com equipamentos modestos e ensaiando em lugares de mudança, por exemplo. na sala de bicicletas da escola ou nos porões de suas casas. Sua primeira apresentação pública ocorreu no mesmo ano de sua fundação -  que estava na sala adjacente do pub Eibach "Zu den drei Linden" perto de Nuremberg. Mesmo assim eles tocaram sua balada rock "Hangman", uma de suas melhores faixas. Em seguida, alguns outros shows se seguiram em Nuremberg e arredores, um deles para a UNICEF. Quando Rainer Häuser deixou o grupo em 1972 porque sua namorada exigia seu tempo, ele foi substituído por Konny Hempel (nascido em 25/10/1953 em Leipzig). Um dia Steff Lindemann da BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk, Bavarian Broadcasting), que regia uma Big Band, ficou tão impressionado com um de seus shows que os convidou para uma competição ao vivo no estúdio 1 do Südwestfunk Baden-Baden onde vieram em segundo lugar na categoria rock.

Em seguida, sua faixa "Obolus machine" foi transmitida no programa de rádio SWF "Musikalische Leichtgewichte" (leves musicais) em 1974, mais tarde também pela BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk, Bavarian Broadcasting). Em 1975, Rainer Häuser voltou ao grupo; mas quando ele perdeu cada vez mais os ensaios por causa de sua namorada, ele foi expulso da banda para sempre depois de um curto período de tempo. Em 1977, levaram para a banda o cantor Werner Weiß, cuja voz era um pouco mais melodiosa que a de Helmut Hiebel. Os fãs agora estavam divididos sobre se a voz rouca e gótica de Helmut ou a voz mais suave de Werner, abrangendo mais oitavas, se adequaria melhor ao som e ao estilo de rock pesado da P₂O₅. Manfred Káaferlein, Norbert Igel e Hans-Günther Linz estavam encarregados do sistema de PA.

Enquanto isso, os artistas haviam composto tantas faixas próprias que decidiram colocá-las em um LP próprio. As faixas foram gravadas e mixadas em novembro de 1978 no estúdio Nuremberg Brutkasten de Peter Klimek. Os membros da banda desenvolveram cada faixa juntos. No final de 1978, o LP foi lançado sob o título de "Vivat progressio - pereat mundus" (Brutkasten 850007). Isso é latim e significa "Viva o progresso, até que o mundo pereça". Produziram 1000 covers (500 como reserva) e 500 LPs. Quando a venda se arrastou, a banda se absteve de uma re-prensagem. Em anexo estava uma folha de tamanho DIN A4 (formato carta) impressa em um lado contendo três das letras da música. O LP foi lançado pelo selo Brutkasten, mas como tanto as gravações quanto a produção foram pagas pelos artistas, eles têm os direitos sobre o LP e não Peter Klimek que acabara de realizar uma encomenda. Enquanto isso, eles também gostavam de se apresentar pintados e fantasiados, com tochas acesas e uma decoração extravagante, um tanto sinistra-misteriosa. Mas os melhores tempos do grupo acabaram agora. Em 1980, Wolfgang Burkhard saiu da banda, logo depois saiu Helmut Hiebel, e depois Konny Hempel. Agora as mudanças seguiam em breves intervalos. O declínio também pode ser visto no fato de que eles tocaram cada vez menos peças próprias e cada vez mais faixas de outros grupos como Black Sabbath ou Judas Priest. Em julho de 1982, o tempo de P₂O₅ definitivamente acabou. Eddy Lotter foi o único que manteve a banda do começo ao fim.

Em 1993, Wolfgang Burkhard e Norbert Igel deixaram algumas gravações dos ensaios de 1975 e 1976 para um selo de Munique que lançou o material como CD "P₂O₅" (Ohrwaschl OW 018), feito na Áustria. Seu som não é tão bom quanto o do LP, mas ainda assim satisfatório. As gravações foram feitas com um gravador de duas pistas e dois microfones. Algumas das faixas eram conhecidas do LP, porém em uma nova versão, algumas até então eram completamente desconhecidas. Realmente excelente é a última faixa, "I got go over me", que foi marcada como faixa bônus, quem sabe por quê. Na capa você pode ver o grupo no antigo cemitério judeu Irrhain na área de Knoblauchsland perto de Nuremberg com Wolfgang Burkhard, Konny Hempel, Eddy Lotter e Helmut Hiebel da esquerda para a direita. E enquanto isso havia uma demanda crescente por seu LP, até porque o selo Brutkasten em geral está em grande demanda. Devido à grande procura, "Vivat progressio - pereat mundus" (Amber Soundroom AS LP 021) foi relançado em 2004, numa edição de 500 LPs. Em anexo está novamente uma folha com as letras das músicas e, adicionalmente, uma folha do tamanho de um LP com dez fotografias, principalmente coloridas, de seu período tardio. Como as fitas master foram perdidas, um LP em perfeitas condições foi decrackeado digitalmente para a gravação. E foi feito com o sistema NoNoise da Cedar, o melhor procedimento que existe. Assim, qualquer tipo de ruído de superfície perturbador é suavemente apagado sem alterar significativamente a qualidade do som. Ainda não houve um lançamento em CD deste trabalho. Para este CD, o mesmo procedimento Cedar foi aplicado para o LP anterior no Amber Soundroom. As duas faixas bônus foram inéditas.

Wolfgang Burkhard morreu em 2004. Konny Hempel agora trabalha como revendedor de bicicletas, Werner Weiß como motorista de táxi, Helmut Hiebel como engenheiro de software na GfK (uma empresa de pesquisa de consumidores em Nuremberg), Eddy Lotter está administrando uma empresa de médio porte para engenharia e construção de instalações, e Norbert Igel hoje trabalha como mestre de gesso. Por último, mas não menos importante, alguns comentários sobre o registro das obras populares de referência. Dag Erik Asbjgrnsen escreve em "Cosmic dreams at play" (Glasgow 1996): "Uma banda bávara obscura que gravou um álbum cheio de uma tremenda energia e grunge de garagem..." A opinião de Steven e Alan Freeman em "The crack in the cosmic egg" (Leicester 1996) não soa muito entusiasmado: "P₂O₅ eram daquele tipo típico de rock alemão de meados dos anos 70, uma pitada de Jane ou Harlis, mas com uma musicalidade bastante medíocre. Momentos estranhos brilham em P₂O₅mas não foram nada de especial. Para aqueles que gostam de um rock mais básico e áspero".

P₂O₅ was founded in Wendelstein, situated in Franconia to the south of Nuremberg, in 1970 and played progressive hard rock with mystical elements. The four original members were schoolmates from Wendelstein and Nuremberg, namely Wolfgang Burkhard on piano, Rainer Häuser on guitar, Helmut Hiebel (born 5/24/1955 in Viersen) on bass and vocals, and Eddy Lotter (born 8/5/1954 in Nuremberg) on drums who invented the band name which stems from the chemistry classes of their Veit Stoß secondary school in Nuremberg, being the formula for phosphorus pentoxide. It is included e.g. in potash - it is not, however, an explosive as was wrongly asserted, but is only smouldering along. The choice of the name had no deeper meaning. Another group from this area later copied this idea and called themselves H₂SO₄. 

Our P₂O₅ started with modest equipment and rehearsed in changing places, e.g. in the school's bicycle room or in the basements of their homes. Their first public performance took place in the very year of their foundation - that was in the adjoining room of the Eibach pub "Zu den drei Linden" near Nuremberg. Even then they played their rock ballad "Hangman", one of their best tracks. Then some further gigs followed in Nuremberg and the surrounding area, one of them for the UNICEF. When Rainer Häuser quit the group in 1972 because his girlfriend made demands on his time, he was replaced by Konny Hempel (born 10/25/1953 in Leipzig). The more famous they became over the years, the more they were booked, also in the farther surrounding areas such as Tirschenreuth, Amberg, Schweinfurt or Aschaffenburg. One day Steff Lindemann from the BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk, Bavarian Broadcasting), who conducted a Big Band, was so impressed by one of their gigs that he invited them to a live competition in the studio 1 of the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden where they came in second in the category rock music. 

There upon their track "Obolus machine" was broadcasted in the SWF radio programme "Musikalische Leichtgewichte" (musical lightweights) in 1974, later also by the BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk, Bavarian Broadcasting). In 1975, Rainer Häuser returned to the group; but when he more and more missed rehearsals because of his girlfriend, he was turned out of the band for good after a short time. In 1977, they took singer Werner Weiß into the band, whose voice was a bit more melodious than that of Helmut Hiebel. The fans were now split about whether the hoarse, gothic voice of Helmut or the softer voice of Werner, spanning more octaves, would better suit the sound and heavy-rock style of P₂O₅. Manfred Käaferlein, Norbert Igel, and Hans-Gúnther Linz were in charge of the PA system.

Meanwhile the artists had composed so many tracks of their own that they decided to put them on an own LP. The tracks were taped and mixed in November 1978 in the Nuremberg Brutkasten studio of Peter Klimek. The band members had developed each track together. Towards the end of 1978 the LP was released under the title of "Vivat progressio - pereat mundus" (Brutkasten 850007). This is Latin and means "Long live progress, until the world perishes". They produced 1000 covers (500 as a reserve) and 500 LPs. When the sale dragged on, the band abstained from a re-pressing. Enclosed was a DIN A4-size (letter format) sheet printed on one side containing three of the song lyrics. The LP was released on the Brutkasten label, but as both the recordings and the production had been paid by the artists, they have the rights on the LP and not Peter Klimek who had just carried out a commission. Meanwhile they also liked performing painted and in fancy dress, with burning torches and an extravagant, somehow sinister-mysterious décor. But the group's best times were over now. In 1980, Wolfgang Burkhard quit the band, shortly after that Helmut Hiebel left, and then Konny Hempel. Now changes followed in brief intervals. The decline could also be seen in the fact that they played less and less own pieces and more and more tracks of other groups like Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. In July 1982, P₂O₅'s time was definitely over. Eddy Lotter was the only one who had stayed the band from the beginning to its very end.

In 1993, Wolfgang Burkhard and Norbert Igel left some recordings from rehearsals from 1975 and 1976 to a Munich label which released the material as CD "P₂O₅" (Ohrwaschl OW 018), made in Austria. Its sound is not as good as that of the LP, but still satisfactory. The recordings had been made with a two-track tape recorder and two microphones. Some of the tracks were known from the LP, however in a new version, some had been hitherto completely unknown. Really outstanding is the last track, "I gotta go over me" which has been marked as a bonus track, who knows why. On the front cover you can see the group on the old Jewish cemetery Irrhain in the Knoblauchsland area near Nuremberg with Wolfgang Burkhard, Konny Hempel, Eddy Lotter, and Helmut Hiebel from left to right. And meanwnhile there was a growing demand for their LP, not leastbecause the Brutkasten label in general is in great demand. Today, according to the "Cosmic price guide 2006" (Wohltorf/Hamburg 2005, www.cosmic-price-guide.com) by Ulrich Klatte, the collectors' price for the record in mint condition is fixed at a price of € 800, according to the price catalogue 2007 of the "Oldie-Markt" magazine at € 1026,40, at 1150 DM to 2000 DM (corresponding with five value points), according to "2001 record collector dreams" (Wien 2000) by Hans Pokora, and at € 585 according to the CD-ROM "Aga's database" (Thors Hammer THCD-ROM 01, www.agasdb.de), where several reference values from auctions are listed in detail. Due to the great demand, "Vivat progressio - pereat mundus" (Amber Soundroom AS LP 021) was re-released in 2004, in an edition of 500 LPs. Enclosed is again a sheet with song lyrics, and additionally one LP-size sheet with ten, mostly colour, photographs of their late period. As the master tapes had been lost, an LP in mint condition was digitally decrackled for the recording. And it was done with the NoNoise system of Cedar, the best procedure whatsoever. Thus, any kind of disturbing surface noise is gently erased without significantly changing the sound quality. There hasn't been a CD release of this work yet. For this CD the same Cedar procedure has been applied as for the earlier LP on Amber Soundroom. The two bonus tracks have been hitherto unreleased.

Wolfgang Burkhard died in 2004. Konny Hempel is now working as a bicycle dealer, Werner Weiß as a taxi driver, Helmut Hiebel as a software engineer with GfK (a company for consumer research in Nuremberg), Eddy Lotter is running a medium-sized company for plant engineering and construction, and Norbert Igel today works as a master plasterer. Last but not least some comments on the record from the popular works of reference. Dag Erik Asbjgrnsen writes in "Cosmic dreams at play" (Glasgow 1996): "An obscure Bavarian band that recorded an album filled with tremendous energy and garage grunge...", The opinion of Steven and Alan Freeman in "The crack in the cosmic egg" (Leicester 1996) doesn't sound very enthusiastic: "P₂O₅ were of that typical mid-70's brand of German rock, a hint of Jane or Harlis, but with rather mediocre musicianship. Odd moments do shine on P₂O₅, but they were nothing special. For those liking a more basic rough-edged rock music".
