Methuselah - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - 1969 (Psychedelic Rock {UK})

Methuselah esteve ativa entre os anos 1967 e 1969. A banda era formada pelo vocalista John Gladwin (ex-Gospel Garden, ex-The Dimples), o guitarrista rítmico Terry Wincott, o baixista Craig Austin, o baterista Mick Bradley (ex-The Sorrows) e o guitarrista Les Nicol (ex-ABC). A banda herdou o contrato de gestão da Gospel Garden com Steve Roland na gestão da Double-R e conseguiu um contrato de três álbuns com a Elektra, mas apenas o primeiro foi lançado. O chefe da gravadora, Jac Holzman, convocou o compositor Kenny Young (famoso por "Under the boardwalk") para produzir o primeiro álbum de músicas originais compostas por Gladwin. Inexplicavelmente, o álbum nunca foi lançado no Reino Unido, e quando nada aconteceu nos Estados Unidos, a banda gravou o álbum duplo, ainda inédito. A essa altura, diferenças musicais haviam dividido a banda e o segundo álbum foi cancelado.

"No primeiro dia, Matusalém falou comigo com sua alma e, embora nossa conversa fosse tão silenciosa quanto um floco de neve à deriva, eu entendi.

No segundo dia, um anjo sobrevoou e sussurrou uma mensagem dos apóstolos Mateus, Marcos, Lucas e João. Caminhamos até o sol se pôr com um véu na testa. A manhã estava silenciosa e sóbria e a promessa do sol de mais um dia se tornou realidade.

Era o terceiro dia. Chegamos à Torre de Coombe, onde morava a pobre Maria. Matusalém sorriu para os olhos dela. Logo eles se separaram. Matusalém vagou sem parar até o dia seguinte. Era o quarto dia e Matusalém estava sentado na floresta meditando sozinho. O inverno chegou e os pensamentos de Matusalém estavam no amanhã e no depois".

Methuselah was active between 1967 and 1969. The band consisted of vocalist John Gladwin (ex-Gospel Garden, ex-The Dimples), rhythm guitarist Terry Wincott, bassist Craig Austin, drummer Mick Bradley (ex-The Sorrows) and guitarist Les Nicol (ex-ABC). The band inherited Gospel Garden's management contract with Steve Roland managing Double-R and got a three-album deal with Elektra, but only the first was released. Record label boss Jac Holzman enlisted songwriter Kenny Young (of "Under the boardwalk" fame) to produce the first album of original songs composed by Gladwin. Inexplicably, the album was never released in the UK, and when nothing happened in the US, the band recorded the still-unreleased double album. By this time, musical differences had divided the band and the second album was cancelled.

After the band split in 1969, John Gladwin and Terry Wincott created Amazing Blondel, Mick Bradley joined Steamhammer, Craig Austin and Les Nicol created Distant Jim with drummer Steve Chapman (ex-Junior's Eyes) and later Coast Road Drive. Les Nicol also played with other British musicians on Pavlov's Dog's second album.

The album has folk, R&B, gospel and even pop influences in its melodies and vocals. The album's name, "Matthew, Mark, Luke and John", has the names of the four evangelists, followers of Christ. On the back of the LP has the following texto:

"On the first day Methuselah spoke to me with his soul and although our conversation was as wordless as a drifting snowflake, I understood.

On the second day an angel flew overhead and whispered a message from the Apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We walked on till the sun had gone down with a veil on ist brow. The moming was silent and sober and the sun's promise for another day had come true.

It was the third day. We came to the Tower of Coombe where poor Mary dwelled. Methuselah smiled at her eyes. Soon they parted. Methuselah drifting on and on to another day. It was the fourth day and Methuselah sat in the forest musing alone. The winter came and Methuselah's thoughts were of tomorrow and tomorrow".
