COMEÇOS

Elonkorjuu (que traduzido do finlandês significa "colheita") foi fundada na cidade de Pori, no oeste da Finlândia, no outono de 1969 por Jukka Syrenius (guitarra), Veli-Pekka Pessi (baixo), Timi Hannukainen (vocal) e Rainer Koski (bateria). Um ano depois, em 1970, a banda foi premiada com o segundo lugar no concurso do Campeonato Finlandês de Rock (Rock SM).

Em 1971, a banda ganhou mais visibilidade com o lançamento da coletânea "Popmestarit", que trazia faixas dos seis finalistas do concurso Rock SM. Logo após este lançamento, o baterista da banda retirou-se para concluir seus estudos, sendo substituído por Veikko Noutio. Mais tarde naquele ano, o vocalista Timi Hannukainen e o baterista Veikko Noutio foram substituídos por Heikki Lajunen e Antti Halminen (vocal) e Eero Rantasila (bateria). Ilkka Poijärvi (Hammond B3 e guitarra) também se juntou à banda. Com a mesma formação, a banda excursionou durante três anos, apresentando-se, por exemplo, no Ruisrock em Turku, no Kesä em Jyväskylä, e em outros festivais e clubes por todo o país. Ainda em 1971, a banda consegue assinar um contrato com a EMI, tendo o seu primeiro LP, "Harvest time", lançado no ano de 1972. Hoje, "Harvest time" é considerada o álbum de vinil finlandês mais caro, com um preço de até €1.500.

Em 1974, o baixista, o tecladista e o baterista saíram da banda. Reijo Hannuksela tornou-se o novo baterista e Hannu Nieminen o novo baixista da banda. Outros que se juntaram à banda foram Pekka Tyni nos teclados, Juha Unkila no saxofone tenor e Kari Tamminen como solista vocal. Elonkorjuu se apresentou no concerto matinal do Pori Jazz.

Em 1975, a banda foi renovada novamente. Veikko Noutio voltou na bateria, Jukka Syrenius e Seppo Tyni nas guitarras, Pekka Tyni no baixo, Hannu Porvari nos teclados. O saxofone tenor foi tocado por Juha Unkila, o saxofone alto e soprano por Petri Heimonen. No mesmo ano, o baixista saiu novamente. Várias fitas de rádio apareceram nessa época com apresentações da banda entre 1975 e 1977. Nessa fase da banda, os seus membros decidem experimentar o jazz e o R&B em seus novos trabalhos. O ano de 1977 também viu uma mudança nos saxofonistas, com a entrada do clarinetista e saxofonista alto e soprano Jari Perkiömäki.

Em 1978, a Elonkorjuu grava seu segundo LP intitulado "Flyin' high, runnin' fast" para a RCA, mas agora sob o nome de Harvest: que é a tradução para o inglês da palavra "Elonkorjuu". Simo Salminen (trompete) e Vesa Aaltonen (produtor e percussionista) aparecem como reforços no álbum.

Em 1979, a banda fez uma pausa que durou 24 anos! Durante este tempo, Syrenius viajou pelo mundo com a Jukka Syrenius Band: Finlândia, Noruega, Dinamarca, Suécia, Alemanha, Yankees, Austrália e África do Sul. Em 2003, a EMI queria lançar o primeiro álbum da banda em formato de CD. Isto despertou o interesse dos músicos e a banda imediatamente lançou o álbum "Scumbag" contendo músicas inéditas. A formação era: Jukka Syrenius (guitarra, vocal), Veli-Pekka Pessi (baixo), Pertti "Pakeri" Hannus (bateria) e Jussi Reunamäki (teclados). A banda entra em turnê, percorrendo os maiores festivais e clubes. O maior público desta década foi no Pori Jazz Festival de 2008, que teve um público de 47 mil ouvintes.

No dia 19 de dezembro de 2009, a banda realizou seu show de 40 anos no teatro Pori. Um álbum, "Scumbag goes to theatre", foi lançado em 2010, seguido por uma turnê no sul da Finlândia e no norte da Finlândia na primavera de 2012.

Em 2012 a EMI lançou uma caixa de 4 CDs, "Seasons", que trazia músicas mais recentes e mais antigas, publicadas e inéditas de 1972 a 2012. A caixa também inclui material raro ao vivo da década de 1970.

Hoje, o baixista Veli-Pekka Pessi é o único membro original da banda. Outros membros da formação mais recente são o baterista húngaro Zoltán Kárpáti e o saxofonista Jari Perkiömäki, doutor em música jazz pela Sibelius Academy. Jussi Reunamäki faleceu em 29 de janeiro de 2020 e Jukka Syrenius em 11 de junho de 2023.

BEGGININGS

Elonkorjuu (which translated from Finnish means "harvest") was founded in the city of Pori in western Finland in autumn 1969 by Jukka Syrenius (guitar), Veli-Pekka Pessi (bass), Timi Hannukainen (vocal) and Rainer Koski (drums). A year later, in 1970, the band was awarded second place in the Finnish Rock Championship (Rock SM) competition.

In 1971, the band gained more visibility with the release of the compilation album "Popmestarit", which featured tracks from the six finalists of the Rock SM contest. Shortly after this release, the band's drummer retired to complete his studies, being replaced by Veikko Noutio. Later that year, vocalist Timi Hannukainen and drummer Veikko Noutio were replaced by Heikki Lajunen and Antti Halminen (vocal) and Eero Rantasila (drums). Ilkka Poijärvi (Hammond B3 and guitar) also joined the band. With the same lineup, the band toured for three years, performing, for example, at Ruisrock in Turku, at Kesä in Jyväskylä, and at other festivals and clubs throughout the country. Still in 1971, the band managed to sign a contract with EMI, having its first LP, "Harvest time", released in 1972. Today, "Harvest time" is considered the most expensive Finnish vinyl album, with a price tag of up to €1,500.

In 1974, the bassist, keyboardist and drummer left the band. Reijo Hannuksela became the new drummer and Hannu Nieminen the band's new bassist. Others who joined the band were Pekka Tyni on keyboards, Juha Unkila on tenor saxophone and Kari Tamminen as vocal soloist. Elonkorjuu performed at the Pori Jazz morning concert.

In 1975 the band was renewed again. Veikko Noutio returned on drums, Jukka Syrenius and Seppo Tyni on guitars, Pekka Tyni on bass, Hannu Porvari on keyboards. The tenor saxophone was played by Juha Unkila, the alto and soprano saxophone by Petri Heimonen. In the same year, the bassist left again. Several radio tapes appeared at that time with the band's performances between 1975 and 1977. At this stage of the band, its members decided to experiment with jazz and R&B in their new works. 1977 also saw a change in saxophonists, with the addition of clarinetist and alto and soprano saxophonist Jari Perkiömäki.

In 1978, Elonkorjuu recorded his second LP entitled "Flyin' high, runnin' fast" for RCA, but now under the name Harvest: which is the English translation of the word "Elonkorjuu". Simo Salminen (trumpet) and Vesa Aaltonen (producer, percussionist) appear as reinforcements on the album.

In 1979, the band took a break that lasted 24 years! During this time, Syrenius traveled the world with the Jukka Syrenius Band: Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Yankees, Australia and South Africa. Veli-Pekka Pessi began building ships, Jari Perkiömäki obtained his Ph.D. in music, Jussi Reunamäki (born December 10, 1975) grew up, Paker became a priest, and Zoltán moved to Finland.

THE RETURN

In 2003, EMI wanted to release the band's first album in CD format. This aroused the interest of the musicians and the band immediately released the album "Scumbag" containing new songs. The lineup was: Jukka Syrenius (guitar, vocal), Veli-Pekka Pessi (bass), Pertti "Pakeri" Hannus (drums) and Jussi Reunamäki (keyboards). The band goes on tour, touring the biggest festivals and clubs. The biggest audience of this decade was at the 2008 Pori Jazz Festival, which had an audience of 47 thousand listeners.

On December 19, 2009, the band performed their 40th anniversary show at the Pori theater. An album, "Scumbag goes to theater", was released in 2010, followed by a tour in Southern Finland and Northern Finland in spring 2012.

In 2012 EMI released a 4-CD box set, "Seasons", which featured newer and older songs, published and unreleased from 1972 to 2012. The box also includes rare live material from the 1970s. Today, bassist Veli-Pekka Pessi is the only original member of the band. Other members of the most recent line-up are Hungarian drummer Zoltán Kárpáti and saxophonist Jari Perkiömäki, a doctor in jazz music from the Sibelius Academy. Jussi Reunamäki passed away on January 29, 2020, and Jukka Syrenius on June 11, 2023.
